Arsenal 2-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I know it amounts to the same thing but staying to fight for your place is motivated differently to refusing to leave
I'm not saying it happened, but it's easy to stay and fight for your place when leaving will have a significant financial impact.

He wouldn't ever lose out.

If he's on £60k a week here and Celta (let's say) offered him £30k a week we'd end up paying the difference.

He wanted to stay to try and play, genuinely.

He's not fighting for his place, he's just counting the money because he knows he's finished. Can't blame him, I'd do the same but let's not romanticise the behaviour. We clearly wouldn't agree to make sure he retained every penny with the move in the summer, otherwise he'd have been off.

No doubt he's of good character. Still genuinely gutted with how it all panned out for him.

If he was just picking the money up he'd have declined the offer to go on the pre season tour like Podence did. He was given the option, he chose to go. You wouldn't do that and leave your family if it was just about cashing the cheques. Without looking it up I'd imagine he's been on the bench for most games this season, when a very obvious chance for him to play came up the manager chose an over the hill, overweight lump, playing on the wrong side to come on instead.

I feel for him, especially Doc getting picked before him but it makes no difference to us whether he's downed tools or not, he's clearly not getting picked by GON whatever. Hope for his sake he gets a move in January.

Doesn't add up though does it.

If he just wanted to play then he'd have taken the offer(s) in late August (as I say we'd have had to do a deal anyway)

If he wanted to Bogarde it then he wouldn't care who plays or if he is or isn't on the bench

Podence was always going to get a move and may not have wanted to risk an injury. And tbf Podence is an absolute cunt, so not exactly a great character barometer

Whatever his actual motivation for staying, Jonny's been an important and good servant to the club.

If he's collecting a check and kicking his feet up, he's earned it, IMV. Can't bemoan that any more than Ruben getting filthy rich in Saudi.

I think he can't do it anymore - maybe he realises it maybe he doesn't. He's in a huff with GON because he's got Doc ahead of him (as I would be) and he's also not prepared to take a paycut, however minor, to move (as I wouldn't).

However no matter how big the huff, or even how valid it is, you're paid to train hard every day and be available to play football, and if you refuse then tbh you should be liable for the sack with no pay off. I don't really care how unfortunate the series of events leading up to it was. You're a footballer, the very least you can do is agree to be available to play football. Thanks for the couple of seasons of excellence, but if you want to be a cunt then you can fuck off and do it in your own house on your own time and not get paid for it. It's not as if we're protecting a transfer fee or anything. Just fuck him off

He won't have refused to play, he'll have said he's either got a niggle that the medical staff can't figure out or mentally he's not in a good place. Either way the John Gregory approach isn't going to work

His fitness and general play seemed fine in the League Cup games. I don't think he's past it yet. Not first choice but an ok backup still.

Last season he couldn’t run, he was weak, his passing was dreadful and he kept getting caught in possesion.

It wasn’t that he was just physically nowhere near, he was technically nowhere near either. Looked completely finished. Worse than Doc at Fulham

Jeez mate, tell us how you really feel.

Yeah true I'm sure he's played the game so as to not leave himself open to consequence. Again to be clear, I'd do the same, but I'm quite comfortable in saying I can be a cunt, especially if I feel like I've been hard done to, and when you play those games you deserve to get called out for what you are

For what it's worth, the fact that Matt Doherty is anywhere near a first team shirt for this football club is an absolute disgrace, and a genuine stain on everybody that's anywhere near the decision making process. Even the kitman needs to take some responsibility for not twatting Gaz when he saw his name on the prep sheet.
