Bristol City 1-2 Wolves (FA Cup 3rd Round): Verdict Thread

Think you'd neuter Gomes a little, he loves the little pass to slide someone in behind and then duck inside himself for the return, he attacks the back post really well too. Think they're both better off as wingbacks and would balance the team out really well on opposite sides.

If the new boss wants more flexible defenders in the back three then opens up the option for Semedo to play RCH, you'd want to sort out how he defends the back stick for that though.
*says it quietly* but I’m not sure Semedo at RCH is much of an upgrade, if any from current form Doc. One thing he does bring is being very good in the air. If you’re playing bueno as CB then think it’s a good foil

Probably helps that he has a manager who wants to use him.

Always felt as if GO was reluctant to use what he was given properly as a kind of "well I told what players I wanted and none of these are right" response.
Whether it’s by luck or design, with semedo coming to end of his deal and his age. We seem to have actually bought well for when that happens with Gomes and Lima there

I got to see a goal by this man the last time I went there

Only just noticed the massive resemblance to Kevin Pietersen

Genuine question:

When was the last time you saw a PL keeper dive, two handed, to stop a shot - like Superman?
Ramsdale does it. It's a dive just to make an effort as they know they are beaten and looks better than standing still as it goes in

Would be a big bonus if Rodrigo can be relied upon in the second half of the season. Last few games he’s shown he could be capable of performing at a strong level. Having a better coach helps but physically it’s definitely taken him time too. I’d be tempted to play him in the front three with Cunha and Larsen (when semedo is fit especially)
This is absolutely where I’m at. Best 11 with everyone fit at the moment looks something like:

Sa
Agbadou Santi Toti
Semedo J. Gomes Andre RAN
Rodrigo JSL Cunha
Guedes, Doc, Hwang, Doyle - we know what they are. Ok as ‘squad’ options. Will have some good days, some bad - but you don’t want them in your best 11.

Looking at that, we still need to improve the back line - but I think Vítor will like Toti, due to the fact he can play CB & LB.

Rodrigo has the shirt for me. Love the lad - so enthusiastic & positive and makes things happen. Love his passion too - you can tell he really wants to be here & as fans, we can’t ask for any more.

Ultimately Doc should find himself back on the bench by the end of January. If he's still playing RCB in Feb then Hobbs and co have failed in their January window.
Whilst I do agree, I think we need to bring in another centre back.

Can’t say I’m overly sold on toti, then semedo/doc or RCB is much of a muchness. Ag is meant to be right sided as well isn’t he?

LCB should be priority

I like that fourth round draw. The only PL teams at home are those playing other PL teams. Soton don’t count.

That's exactly what I was saying.

Personally I think Rodrigo should overtake Semedo. He's better at joining the attack which is what you want from a wing-back. And he does enough defensive work to justify his inclusion. Especially since the RCB will move across and cover that position if he isn't there.

That allows you to play Guedes, who I think has been playing well lately. His movement off the defenders shoulders, running with the ball, and linking play with those around him was really good yesterday. Whether he can keep that level up against better opposition is another story but I think he's earned his chance now.

We know Semedo is likely to leave in the summer so we should be planning for his departure and easing Rodrigo into the team at RWB more.

Don't think anyone is expecting Semedo at CB are they? Only under very extreme circumstances
Currently one injury away from that potentially aren’t we.

Regarding Gomes, be interesting to see what he’s like further forward. Very good attacking from deep currently, a lot like RaN. Not sure if he’ll be less affective further forward?

Would be starting with Guedes, JSL and Cunha personally against Newcastle

It’s definitely an option. With Rodrigo being young, he will have inconsistencies. Atleast we have an experienced option as well, plenty of football that they can both play between now and end of season

I wouldn’t sacrifice Semedo to fit Guedes in the team anymore than I’d leave out roast potatoes to find room for a courgette in my Sunday dinner.

Semedo is a decent defender but contributes very little to the attack. It's another option, certainly if we need to make substitutions to help get a goal in a game.

Well he might have a spell out now anyway, so Gomes R gets his chance as part of a back 5.I like him of course, but Semedo is an underrated defender and solidity at the back is key right now. TBH it’s Guedes I seem to view differently. Thought he was poor yesterday. I could only watch from about 30 mins, apparently he was mint before then, but it was lame stuff in reality in the second half. Would rather have the persistent enterprise of Gomes up there in his place. Guedes as the bench option for me.

I find it hard to say it out loud but I prefer Doc to Semedo at RCB. From the snippets Pereira has let out it seems we are trying to sign a LCB. If we don't manage it, then we're stuck with 3 from Agba, Santi, Doc, Dawson and Toti. Not ideal I know but hopefully Semedo won't be called on. Just hope Dawson and Toti aren't out long.

Let's be absolutely straight here, Guedes has been an utter disaster of a player for us - paid far too much, absolutely went missing all the time and so on. Barely anyone was upset at him disappearing off on those loan spells.

This season, we basically couldn't give him away, and it looked like it. But the last few games, he actually has started to look like a Portugal international, not his careless twin brother. He's doing a lot of work off the ball surprisingly, and pulling defences around to give the likes of JSL and Rodrigo more space to work with.

Recency bias and all that, but he's been worth his place, and the shirt is his to keep, IF, and it's a huge if, he wants it enough.

And yes, this post makes me feel very very wrong.
