Bristol City 1-2 Wolves (FA Cup 3rd Round): Verdict Thread

You could but where do you play Cunha, who seems to thrive off that kinda inside left role. But I see what you mean, could be a good option, as Rodrigo can hold the width of the pitch quite well which would allow RAN to drive inside.
Think you'd neuter Gomes a little, he loves the little pass to slide someone in behind and then duck inside himself for the return, he attacks the back post really well too. Think they're both better off as wingbacks and would balance the team out really well on opposite sides.

If the new boss wants more flexible defenders in the back three then opens up the option for Semedo to play RCH, you'd want to sort out how he defends the back stick for that though.

Think he can do that pretty well by starting quite wide on the touchline. RAN occupies the space inside (inverted, if you like) which opens up that slide pass but also allows him to attack the back post from wide when we attack from the other side.

I think playing both of them as our wing backs would leave us quite open. Probably something you can do when you are in control of the game but against more physical opposition or against a top 6 team might leave us exposed.

The good thing is that Rodrigo looks more than ready now to make a decent impact on the starting XI - we've had far too many signings over the last five years where that hasn't been the case.

I'll put in on here, as it's about the FA Cup, but unless you are a lower league side against a decent sized PL one or at the ¼ final stage it's dead. Crowds at Sheff U and Sunderland, decent sized clubs playing others in the same league are pitiful. That's not a dig at those clubs, just what the competition has become.

I work with two die hard blades and both skipped the cup game though due to the weather and roads here and I have never known them missing a home game. It was -6 on our street that day.

You know something, he seems to really put a shift in. Very positive attitude and obviously enjoys playing for Wolves. Good lad!

Probably helps that he has a manager who wants to use him.

Always felt as if GO was reluctant to use what he was given properly as a kind of "well I told what players I wanted and none of these are right" response.

It's just an extra bit of time/movement in the sequence to make that work I suppose, waiting for RAN to get up in the underlap for the pass in behind, whereas if Gomes is the wingback he should already have someone ahead of him for that pass instantly more often than not. Also a little skeptical of RAN as a great foil with the wall pass as he can have a tendency to be a bit of a ball hog at times and take a touch too many which could make it difficult for Gomes to time the runs inside.

We haven't really seen much of Gomes defending from that role yet either, RAN obviously a bit hit and miss with the defensive side of his game so would be nice to have someone more solid to counteract that if you could.

If nothing else it's nice to at least have a viable option for the right hand side with Semedo not yet confirmed for a longer stay.

It was weird, had a good pre season, a few iffy games early on, not absolute howlers but then hardly appeared.

Yeah that’s fair. I think RAN can be quite good at combinations off of one touch when he wants to be but more often from out to in (seems to link with Cunha quite well) rather than the other way round.
