Wolves 2-1 Everton: Verdict Thread

If we play all the game like we did in the first half we can beat anyone.
Rice and Soucek won't be so easy to get behind - they're excellent at screening. You want to be trying to get in behind their full backs when pushed on and isolating Zouma and Ogbonna.

I honestly don't think we adopted any other kind of approach last night, I thought Rafa spotted what he did wrong and in bringing Delph on shored up their midfield that quite frankly was totally outclassed and bypassed in the first half
Delph coming on didn't neccesarily change Everton's shape so much as changed their attitude in midfield.

Looked to me like Everton were playing a 4-4-2 in the first half and a 4-1-4-1 in the second. Delph was definitely occupying space that had been vacant prior to his introduction.

Yep, that's exactly what they did. Delph dropping deep covered a lot of the inside passes to Raul.

We tried to go wider to drag him out but Trincao was knackered at that point and just didn't have the energy he did in the first half when his diagonal runs and were found by Neves.

It was good by Rafa but all a bit too late.

Genuinely struggling to remember many occasions of Adama having an impact off the bench. You'd think he'd be a great sub to have, but it rarely happens. Of course quite a lot of games where he's started and been very good.
He did well off the bench in the first half of 2019/20. That's what got him in the starting 11

Only thing to add is I'd forgotten how much I hate VAR. On the tele you can just about put up with as you know pretty quickly it's being looked at, but at the match its a killer, particularly in a game like yesterday when in the moment Hwang didn't look off, so you'd celebrated and chatted a bit about it before you even knew there was a check.

I know it was offside and without VAR to fall back on perhaps the linesman would have flagged but I'd rather have the odd mistake than the mood killer that it is.

And how many times would you tolerate it if it was, seemingly, constantly against us

Tbh even on the tv it was one of those annoying ones that didn’t look like there was anything wrong in real time so I wasn’t expecting a check. Must be really horrible in the ground.

Adama - should we cash in and sell him in January? I genuinely think we are a better team without him, and we could get a decent transfer fee before his contract expires. We could then re-invest that money into improving the centre midfield or defence. We are awash with wingers so could afford to lose him.

Reagrding VAR, I think it is working fine this season. Can't complain with both of the calls yesterday (the offside and the free kick/penalty).

Ref was a bit of an odd one though. Holgate should have been off for 2 x yellows (cynical foul on Trincao in first, then the , didn't recieve a single one!

We should have sold him in the Summer
He's not in our best 11 - never has been without injuries imo
Giving him a £100k a week contract makes him borderline immovable whilst barely playing.
Whilst driving home after the game last night Mike Taylor on WM described him as having more thrilling moments than telling moments, that resonated with me

It's not about whether the end result is right for me, it's about what it detracts from the live experience. At the time I didn't think VAR stopped the penalty anyway, it was the linesman although I'm sure it endorsed the decision. It all depends whether you view purity, assuming the decision is correct, versus the emotional part of the fan experience.

I'm not so much against it for penalties or red cards, but for goals that then become no goals it's just such a mood hoover and for me takes away more than it gives. Yesterday is a good game to talk about it as it's not sour grapes given we still won

Might sound obvious, but really depends on whether the funds will be re invested and how they will be. We should be looking at keeping our players and addingC rather than selling to buy.

For me, having a front 3 from pool of adama, raul, Silva, Neto, Podence, hwang, trincao, is a great place to be in.

The linesman was in a much worse position to judge whether it was inside the area. Trincao was running away from him into the area whereas Atkinson was on the edge of the D with a more side on view.

Personally I did think it was just outside though.

But not at the cost of being in a bad place wrt midfield and central defence. If we have to lose a wide player to correct that it makes sense. One injury and were down to Cundle as first option off the bench.

I'm all for options, but you're talking about 5 players for 2 positions when Neto is fit.

It's 1 too many for me, even if you factor in Hwang as someone who can play centrally.

If we had similar options at CM and CB and the club could afford it and Bruno could keep them happy I'd say fine

I'm in 2 minds about Adama, I don't want to get rid of any of our good players and he is probably the most thrilling player to watch in the Premier league when he gets it right, problem is he doesn't get it right often enough. As has been said we have a glut of wide forwards ( although none of them can do what he does) and it would makes sense for us to sell one for good money provided its spent well.
Certainly on Monday we looked more balanced and didn't get pushed back as much when out of possession.
It's a tricky one for me....also would Adama be happy being a bit part player
