Bournemouth 0-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

VAR suggested the ref review it. The ref did so and changed the card to red so the ref thinks it was an error. Really can’t see how that’s such a problem to some people.

I can't see how you don't. Refs don't change their minds because they think it's an error, they do because they've been humiliated into doing so, often with questionable evidence. Which is why we have about 1 a season that refuses. I could give you a long list of ones which have gone against Wolves including against Bournemouth last season with Cunha's stray arm and Attwell as referee this time. Was that an error or did he just feel forced into it? It amuses me it's all OK when it goes for us, but not when it doesn't.

I’m afraid that if you think it’s ‘disgusting’ rather than just a poorly controlled challenge that could provoke a red, I’m in danger of agreeing with Lineker et al. He’s obviously tried to get the ball and rolled over the top. We got lucky and I don’t like the system.
Doesn't matter what he was trying to do, he made forceful contact in an area that could have left Rayan a devastating injury.

It’s a red card by the laws of the game now and that is why VAR got involved and ask Salisbury to have another look. It is a clear and obvious error when the laws state that challenge has to be a red. Getting a touch on the ball including bouncing off it don’t affect the decision it’s all about where the contact is, the force, the control etc…

At the time in the ground i thought it was good challenge with a slightly reckless follow through and i’d be happy if that was a yellow. Having seen it back i still think the laws should say it’s a yellow but they don’t so red card was right.

But the resulting injury is no direct proof of a card. Accidents happen. Someone broke my leg in a match and it was barely a foul. Intent does matter in the laws of the game, outcomes actually don’t.

Outcomes don't always, I agree, but when the challenge is that late and high, it's a consideration. And if it isn't, it should be.

The authorities are trying to make players think more about how they tackle surely. Yes he was trying to win the ball and there was a miniscule contact on the ball but in the officials view he went in hard, with little control which could have been a really bad injury. In the context of a game like football I'm not sure players are ever going to be fully in control of a tackle so not sure it will ever be be fully mitigated. I understand why the authorities are trying to make it so but in a fast, contact sport it's tricky. I don't have an answer.

Personally I dont think that should be a red, he doesn’t fly in, does try to win the ball, he's not looking to do him, RAN sells it and as often the case the still doing the rounds makes it look worse than it was.

None of which means it isn't though, although I don't think VAR should have got involved.
It's a red for me. After listening to Alvin Martin on talksport who thought it wasn't even a yellow, I fully expected to see a bad decision...

He's gone over the top of the ball, studs up and made heavy contact with RAN. Not malicious, but totally reckless. Red card all day.
