Wolves 1-3 Crystal Palace: Verdict Thread

But unless I'm misunderstanding you, I don't think this is how GON wants us to perform? Do you?

And with our better, influcial players back we'd be better.

Problem is a couple of our better players may well get sold, but that's not GON's fault.

Let's hope a pre season of drilling a defined strategy (or several of them) sorts out a lot of these issues.

Fatigue has definitely been an issue.
But he continually sets us up to perform like this… our deficiencies are obvious but he does nothing to mitigate them.

No one makes him pick Doherty

He should have sussed Kilman out inside a month

Why are we so bad on the ball except on a counter

Why do we keep trying to play out from the back when we obviously can't

But he is being set up to fail and that isn't his fault
I'm not talking to you about Doherty, there's no point.

Kilman's form has fallen since Dawson got injured. Not sure what GON could have done about that, he can't drop him, we have no one else.

There were several examples today of Bentley playing it "long" and we lost it immediately then too, the persistence in trying to play it out from the back is understandable we're just not very good at it, at the moment, and need a plan B.

Well what should he do differently, as said, rather than playing it short out from the back, should we go long to Doherty on the half way line? Nuno style?

Today is best summed up by the fact Doherty was one of our better players. When the Europe thread was opened I said I’d be happy with top half and we’ve blown that. We made it so easy for them with pathetic attempts to play out from the back, the players we have just can't do and whilst everyone we play knows it GO doesn’t appear to. The summer window needs to be very successful or 14th will look like dreamland.

We could play three central midfielders in a way that doesn't leave the middle of the park completely open for the opposition to exploit. It's almost an achievement how poorly we handle that area.

How many times did Wharton pick up the ball today with a 2 foot radius of freedom?

Not too much to say that I didn't at half time, tactically wrong, we continue to play a nominally defensive formation but offer so much space for the opposition to utilise, 4 or 5 times we were tackled facing our own goal in the first half, 1 leading to them scoring. Attitude/ effort issues accompanied that. There are players I've disliked more than Max Kilman in my Wolves supporting life, he's not an offensive guy, he seems a nice bloke. There's very few I've wanted us to fuck off for the overall good of the team more though. 2 examples today, the third goal to demonstrate his on field deficiencies and when it's kicking off in the Semedo handbags, he's nowhere to be seen. His captaincy is pathetic
We are definitely at a point where taking the captaincy off him would help him. He should never have been given it, nor should he have accepted it. But who refuses the captaincy?

Would you rather lose the ball 50 yards from goal or 10 yards from goal? It's a tough one.

Kilman is what he always has been and if you think Doherty is anything other than a joke at this level in mid-2024 then what can I say. He's laughably poor, except I'm paying nearly £700 a year to watch him be a very expensive joke.

I'd sooner we get better with the ball and generate more attacks from short passing. We do on occasion create opening from it, we did for RAN today - but those moments get lost because of how often we fuck it up quite dramatically. 2 or 3 times in the first half for example.

With the personnel we have at the moment playing it long from the keeper will give the opponents the ball back EVERY time.

As a wish list that's fine, but it cost us 1 goal and could have been 3 today and that's been a constant all season. Philosophically it's fine, GON continuing to do it with players who can't is a significant managerial deficiency

Is the open top bus Parade on bank holiday Monday? With Jeff holding up a placard saying we’ve got our £100m again next season.
Sums up right where we’re at, I’m glad I’ve chosen this point to walk away from game attendance. The club has as much energy as I do.
I tried to justify that Palace weren’t much better than us in the build up thread but they’re in every single facet currently. Better coached, better organised, better defenders a clear forward thinking plan and probably a better future.
Our club plan is hand to mouth existence season by season.
The side put out today will probably be roughly about the strongest we can muster next season with the expectation that Neto leaves, I actually think every player in the squad has a price so could be worse.
The annoying thing is they’ll assume well Jeff will that is a comfortable season so next season will be just fine.
Well a few things you won’t get a more less prepared and lower ability in the 3 that came up this season, Everton are with in 1 point of us without points docking (they went 14 games without a win).
The 3 coming up whoever the 3rd team is will offer far more.
People using injuries as an excuse, Brentford had Toney out for over 50% of the season, Mbuemo and Wissa were missing for a long time and Henry is out all season. Palace had a long period without Eze or olise etc we’re not alone in this.
The defensive ideology is brain dead, yep play out from the back if you can do it not if you’re blatantly hopeless at it hitting it longer isn’t aimlessly hitting anywhere.
The players are tired yep true but as are a lot of teams, players are on the beach so are a lot of teams.
Dawson out yes is a disadvantage but he’s not prime Cannovaro, Neto out yep reduces our attacking output but he’s not a prime Messi.
Frankly we’ve coped really poorly since the Fulham game with the injuries and have just looked like a walking defeat weekly.

Yeah I agree.

He should have developed an alternative by now, but given our personnel its not that simple, and it's why we so often used to see Neves at CB after Coady left, which everyone hated.

I'd rather us get better too but we just don't have the players. Toti will always be ultra-rustic and Kilman pretty much never breaks the lines with his passing. Plus for all their qualities, all our CMs are miles off the way Neves and Moutinho were receiving the ball from deep.

We sign our own death warrant, time and time again.

Watching the goals back, we're so alarmingly passive on all theirs. Not even just Captain Wow this time. RAN on the first, what are you up to lad.

Where they can’t score. And we might actually win a second ball or regain possession from them near half way rather than in our own third where the cycle continues and we hoof it forward with all our players in our own third…

Yep.

RAN had his worst game of the season today - since being brought back to defence having played further forward he's been pretty poor.

Should have left him up there!

I remember when we started doing that in the first PL season I shitted myself as a Wolves team hadn't done that before, there were elements of that in the Championship but nowhere near so much. Neves, Moutinho and Jonny always got us out of tight situations. These players can't

It wasn't as much of an issue earlier in the season, its become more and more evident as the season as gone on. A combination of sides pressing us harder as they recognise it as a weakness and fatigue/confidence/form. It's self perpetuating.

The problem with the playing out from the back is we often hit it long anyway so it’s a pointless exercise

Could well be our lowest league position since promotion, check the trajectory 10th, 13th maybe 14th.
