i think all of Coady, Boly and Saiss can play in a four, but in an ideal world i would want a big upgrade at CB if you are gonna upgrade..not like semedo for doc(if that is even an upgrade, dont think so myself even if semedo has been much better than when he started to play)

Semedo is a huge upgrade on Doherty, predominantly because we don't need to compromise the entire team to cover his deficiencies.

If there is a decent, European CB available for Semedo/Raul money and is a huge upgrade on Coady and Boly then let's do business. Again, I'm not saying that partnership is the answer to our defensive problems - I'd just be interested to see it after a pre-season.

What is 'that level of player' though? Getting an upgrade on Conor Coady as defender in a 4 should be a relatively easy mission without having to go to the level of player who will only sign for a club in Europe. Even Boly is a projection as to how he'll play in that system. Having a player who has proven their ability there is an absolute must or you run the risk of again having to play a 3 and or sitting midfielders to cover them.

Name some for me then, who we could realistically attract. I'm honestly not being difficult, I'm just interested.

I'll give you Dunk and Tarkowski but they would likely be £30m minimum.

Well people shouldn't keep defending him for reasons that aren't even there. He's been bloody awful. I'd say he gets off lightly compared to what Fabio Silva has had, and there are far more mitigating factors for the latter.

Not many teams sign an experienced striker on loan, watch them score 0 goals in 9 games (and hardly look like scoring) then keep playing them when they're obviously not going to sign permanently AND there's an alternative there.

But you keep banging that drum, he might have a shot one day.

They are the "attacking play". Unless you're expecting Ruben Neves to become Maradona overnight.

Semedo is a huge upgrade on Doherty, predominantly because we don't need to compromise the entire team to cover his deficiencies.

sorry, i dont see semedo as a huge upgrade, doc is way better in scoring goals and making triangles and runs offensively..and semedo has some errors in him defensively too, like doc

I get that, but Traore's lack of effort to get into the box for Neto as highlighted by Goodman on commentary was shameful. WJ ran quicker.

Neto was excellent. Adama was disgraceful, Cutrone levels of application.

Doherty has been absolutely abysmal for Spurs. To the extent he rarely makes their team now ahead of Serge Aurier. He can't be that good.

all i want is us to play on the opposition half, make some combinations, show some intent of scoring and wanna win, instead of afraid to lose..having some fun playing, looks now like a funeral everytime we play

I'm just not willing to write Coady-Boly off yet. They've only played 3 games together. I'm not saying it's the solution, I'd just be interested to see.

I agree, and argued as much the other day, but realistically if we want to get back to 'best of the rest' playing a back 4 then, hand on heart, even the most optimistic Coady fan won't want that pairing as first choice for the season.

We've not upgraded the CB's since we came up, and if we want to move away from having to set up to protect them every game above all other considerations then we need a fresh injection of quality there, and I don't mean someone who'll need two seasons till they can grow a beard

We are just too conservative, the players know it and don't make attacking runs because we play gutless football and rarely get the ball in the box.

Once you've bust a gut to get in the box so many times to see us check back and start passing it backwards ending at our own keepers hands. It must be fucking annoying.

I am not sticking up for Jose or Fabio. BTW I think they are both no where near the standards we need. Fabio is young obviously but I've seen enough to think that this "super talent" may be nothing but hype.

One of the Newcastle players called out Mrs Doubtfire for being a coward, I'm sure our players are feeling a little way along this line. Nuno has always been a defensive manager, it will be very hard for that to change.

I don't think we "play a back 7" because of Semedo.

We did keep Neves on the halfway line as cover for when Doherty went marauding forwards and jogged back.

i would love to think Coady would be a good first choice at centre back in a back four but he just isn't. Never will be. The role he has played for the last three and a half years has suited him perfectly, but if we are to go to a back four a starting centre back to go next to Boly is imperative.

im sure we can, if the players are allowed and have some confidence in doing so..practise in training or whatever, dont just park the bus first half or start playing when we concede. Of course you have to defend too, but that becomes a bit more easy if you can press higher up and not invite pressure so easily
