Villa 0-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I like Konsa and Tarkowski. I'd not sure I'd take the others - I've never really rated Mings.

White would be ridiculously expensive and is all potential.
No, i wouldn't want most of them, but they are all better ch's than Coady in a 4

Thing is we could be very attacking with a back 3 if we wanted to. All 3 are capable of moving forward with the ball and when they do passing forward and hoping attacks but for some reason Nuno doesn't want this.

Donk went on a good surging run yesterday and there was a good chance of an overload of he passed forward to Neto but he stops as he gets 5 yards beyond halfway, turns and passes it backwards 30 yards. It clearly had to be tactical and it's infuriating to watch

When they played together as a three when Boly was injured last season they basically did this, and it worked pretty well even if conceded slightly more without Boly.

I think Nuno has gone for this approach in the same situation, tbh, just the players are in worse form, have worse conditioning, and with less confidence due to the poor season we have had. We've just had some shit 30 minute periods like against Southampton and Newcastle, as opposed to it being design.

I imagine it is hard to see that WJ does everything in that first paragraph but work hard

Hard to see through one eye I would think.
Yes mate, he's Niall Quinn in the making.

I think you want to believe and I can't stop you doing that.

They'd be £40m, but there's 2.
I wouldn't want most of these, but it displays how much I think you over estimate Coady.
Centre halves who are better in a back 4 who don't play for a traditional Top 6 side or Leicester
Mings
Konsa
Keane
Godfrey
Cahill
Mee
Tarkowski
Lascelles
White
Webster
Even players like Ciaran Clark do a job. I’d add Craig Dawson as well

It's also how we played in the early stages of this season: the centre-halves stepping up and overloading the midfield. Boly and Saiss were excellent at it.

It's confidence that means they pass 30 yards back as they don't want to lose possession. Not tactics.

That's not what I said and you know it.

I get it WJ is your new hate figure, it's just that, y'know, sometimes the player isn't that bad.

Well people shouldn't keep defending him for reasons that aren't even there. He's been bloody awful. I'd say he gets off lightly compared to what Fabio Silva has had, and there are far more mitigating factors for the latter.

Not many teams sign an experienced striker on loan, watch them score 0 goals in 9 games (and hardly look like scoring) then keep playing them when they're obviously not going to sign permanently AND there's an alternative there.

But you keep banging that drum, he might have a shot one day.
I am not banging any drum. I just think you made your mind up early and have failed to give him some credit for his link up play which is better than Fabius. As is his strength. He brings Neto and Traore in better too. It’s not his fault that they can’t cross a road yesterday.
He has done little. He needs to do more. None of that is in dispute. But that is equally true if Fabio. Fab is not ready to start games, lead a line etc for at least 2 years. In the meantime we need to use the current squad to the best of their abilities however limited.

I'm not sure he is. I haven't seen him hold a defender off once. If he's challenged then he loses it. If not then he taps it back a couple of yards then stands still.
have to agree with that, he isnt very good at all being a target player

It's not that at all. It's just that terms like "physical presence" and "link up play" get thrown in and yet he looks weak as piss and doesn't link with anyone. I get confused very easily.

I think it is tactical Sam.

I think it is tactical Sam.

But early season form would suggest otherwise. Granted it wasn't blistering, but defenders did step up to overload midfield. They did at times last season too.

Dendoncker is as out of form as any of them. It's confidence.

Likewise thinking Conor Coady is going to be a mainstay of a top 6 chasing back 4 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think what I actually said was it was worth a look, not a certainty... and that a replacement wouldn't be cheap, and that splashing on a player isn't really what we do.

Fabio 789mins 2goals 0assists
Jose 591mins 0goals 1assist
Mbaye Diagne 637mins 1goal 2 assists

On a par with WBA's 3rd choice (in minutes played)

I hope you're wrong, because I wonder what else we'd be splashing our cash on?

Since we were promoted we've signed an upgrade player for every position in the team: GK, wing/full-backs, centre mid, wide forwards, striker, all except centre-back.

Tbh I'd be prioritising signing one even if we were persisting with three at the back
We’ve needed an upgrade on RCB since promotion. Let’s hope this is the time it finally happens.

Early season form?

We were just as bad then as we were now.

Our performances in the first 1/3 of the season, the bad patch and now aren’t really any different. We won the fine margins in the first third, wrong side of them in the bad patch and we’ve benefited from a degree of luck recently. All just regressing to the the mean of a lower midtable team.

And it’s been highlighted we don’t need to break the bank and sign Dias....
