The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

COD campaign modes are shite, to be fair.

I thought I'd get the SP campaign done while waiting for BF3 to be released, 3 sittings later and the credits are rolling.

Enjoyed what little was there, but glad I didn't pay full price for it!

Just playing Arkham Asylum whilst waiting for Skyrim. It is surprisingly good although I hate some of the boss fights.

Why do they have to put boss fights in games? They are just a real pain. In fact I should post this in the 'things that annoy you' thread.

I thought the bosses in Arkham Asylum were ace. Depends how they're done I suppose, I agree with you in some games - I will never, ever forgive Diddy Kong Racing with that fucking octopus boss.

In fact HW - we should have a 5 best/worst bosses.

Here goes - the best:

5. The spider's web in Mario Galaxy - one of the most fun levels ever. Brilliant use of the Wiimotes - such a shame so few games have made the most of them.
4. Halo 2 - the scarab.
3. The final boss - Ganon - in Zelda - The Wind Waker. Awesome end to an awesome game.
2. The helicopter in Unchartered 2. I love that level in the hotel, and it's extremely satisfying to finally blow that thing out of the sky. Stunning visuals.
1. Poseidon in God of War 3. Absolutely vast - it's basically a whole level spend on/in a giant titan called Gaia, before you fight several forms of Poseidon. It's varied, it's frantic and above us, it's absolutely colossal. And it's the first level of the game too. Amazing.

The worst:

5. The final Dr Robotnik boss in Sonic 2. Would normally be okay but they make you do this with no rings. One touch and that's it - dead. Crappy decision to make it so tough.
4. The Devil on Guitar Hero 3. For fuck's sake - I have just hit every fucking note - why won't you give up???!
3. Darth Malak in KOTOR - an amazing game with a pretty shit final boss. Who is a bastard to beat too.
2. The bastard octopus in Diddy Kong Racing. I need to move on from my hatred of this boss - but I just can't.
1. Seth from Street Fighter IV. Cheap wanker that he is. I hate him.

I'm with HW, I generally find bosses annoying but here are 5 I've encountered that have left lasting impressions:

1. Tyrant, Resident Evil. In a game that was equal parts frustrating and awesome, this final boss encapsulated both qualities. I lost count of the number of times I had to reload my saved game to defeat this boss...

2. Revolver Ocelot, Metal Gear Solid. Memorable more for his name than the actual fight. Liquid Snake was actually a pretty tough fight though...

3. Sephiroth, Final Fantasy 7. Possibly the best villain in video game history, and I reckon defeating this final boss was a fight that felt like it lasted at least an hour. Anyone who hasn't played FF7 really, really should.

4. Pyramid Head, Silent Hill 2. Not actually a boss as you don't have to kill him, but possibly the most disturbing thing in all of video game history. And he recurs on several psychologically traumatising occasions.

5. Atlas/Frank Fontaine, Bioshock. Not the most difficult boss to beat, but when you encounter him you just want to defeat him after the bastard had misled you, betrayed you and used you throughout the entire game. Would you kindly fuck off and die...

Yes - I didn't mind killing him!

2. Revolver Ocelot, Metal Gear Solid.

Ah, I preferred Pyscho Mantis, if only because it took me days to work out I needed switch the controller to the other port to beat him!

I'm not big on boss fights either, they're rarely anything new these days. Dead Space 2 was a great game which was let down (IMO) by a shite final battle.

Unchartered 3 looks absolutely brilliant. The first was good, the second was even better. This one looks better yet.

I'm going to have to get this at some point - I think it's easily the best PS3 exclusive franchise.

Uncharted is a strange series for me. I absolutely hate the combat and shooty stuff but love the story. It's one of, if not the only game I play just to get to the next cut scene. Will pick up the 3rd when it inevitably hits the classics range (or something like that) for £20.

As for bosses. I just hate boss fights. They are always just out of character to the rest of the game especially in games where bosses = loads of health. Psycho Mantis (as Knockout mentions) left a lasting impression though as it was such a unique and imaginative boss for not only the way it you had to go about defeating him but his ability to read your memory card and talk nonsense during the battle. Also it's where the Psycho from my name is from. Screaming Mantis on the other hand was just a pain in the arse.

A game series I feel that gets bosses mostly right though is Zelda. You find a new weapon and the boss usually requires it to be defeated and at same time gives you a decent lesson in using it ready for the next temple. Ganon from both Ocarina and Wind Waker are personal favourites although WW just edges it. Phantom Ganon was also awesome in OoT as it had you trying to watch loads of paintings at once while trying to get your timing correct. Can't wait for the new Zelda, just a shame it comes out almost alongside Skyrim.

I also enjoyed the boss in Portal 2 as it was mostly amusing. 1st portal boss was almost chore like though.

Hated:

Nemesis in Res Evil 3 was probably my most hated in the Res series. Just please fuck off and die once and for all. Swear you have to defeat him like 12 times. Same with Pyramid head in SH2. JUST DIE!.

I really can't remember Darth Malak from KOTOR though. Although mostly because I don't remember anything of the game at all. The only thing I do remember is I really enjoyed it. I bought it on PC a while ago to play again but it hasn't really aged well graphically and I just get put off.

End battle from ME2 I hated as well. Finished it off with my last Sniper round which was about the most pleasing thing of the whole encounter. Had I missed I would have broken something as that whole last level was just a pile of shit. Story wise, it was a fantastic end and really sets up the 3rd brilliantly, can't wait to finish that story but just hated taking the thing down.

Bioshock weren't too bad as it tried to be clever and different. It almost made up for the annoyingly rubbish boss fight but not quite.

Borderlands. Not only was that boss one of the worst I've encountered (REALLY hated it), it was also coupled with possibly the worst ending to a game I've ever had. Really enjoyed that game too but what a massive disappointment that ending was.

All bosses in Deus EX: HR were rubbish too.

The first Silent Hill had the easiest final boss, it was coded to die on your last round of ammo.

Emptied all my guns outside, leaving one bullet in my pistol.

Enter room, aim, shoot, finished.

Best - the snot bungee boss on earthworm jim!

Worst - any bosses on altered beast

Can't decide - the spawn machine final boss on doom 2

Holy crap, beating it would have been so much easier if I had known that little nugget!

As an aside, Silent Hill had what was surely one of the most spine chilling moments in any game ever: you're in the school and a phone rings, you answer it and it's it your missing daughter crying down the phone...that scene really creeped me out...

I tried Silent Hill on PS3 and am sad to admit I'm too big of a pussy to play it.

Just started playing F1 2011, lost 3 front wings in 4 attempted laps of Melbourne, maybe need to calm down with the right trigger.

Make that 4 in 5, i tried adding some more downforce but it helped nothing, i'm guessing they've made the effects of going out on cold tyres stronger this year and i'm pushing too early.

You'll have fun at Monaco then.

It's a lot different than 2010, but better in every way. I was hunting down Hamilton for 1st at a wet Silverstone, catching him by a second a lap then binned it on the last lap by pushing a little bit too much.

I think i just started losing my rag a bit after a while and was making it worse, i put together a decent 7-8 lap spell in P2 but was running a very heavy downforce set up to give me a bit of leeway, i'll have another crack later and hopefully i'll be able to start taking a bit of wing off as i get better at it.

I'm trying my best to not want this game but every new wacky insane trailer they release is making it very difficult. In the next 30 days alone there is BF3, MW3, Arkham City, Skyrim, Zelda Skyward Sword, Uncharted 3, AC Revelations, Halo Anniversary and Saints Row 3. That's like £300!. I only have BF3 pre-ordered so far. Tough choices ahead.
