The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Can't speak for FIFA 12 but I have no problems like that at all on FIFA 11. Nor on FIFA 10.

I just cant find any tactical set up where i can get my team moving, its like watching real life Wolves! Whenever it gets played up to the forwards they're on their own from there and neither Doyle nor Fletcher has enough to get past their man so i'm pretty much done at that point.

Have you not mastered 1-2's? Always a good ploy, especially with strong forwards and pacy attacking midfielders. Or some trickery? Or different formations?

I have never experienced the issues you've mentioned (excepting the defending on 12 as I don't have it yet).

Theres never an option for a 1-2, if i play a pass the bloke that originally had the ball pretty much stays where he was, i can usually play some nice little triangles along between fullback, centre mid, winger, forward but then thats the end of the road, no-ones run carries on so its either go it alone or turn round and keep the ball but offer zero goal threat.

I flat out refuse to use the tricks, they should be an option not a neccessity, change of direction and pace should be enough to work a bit of space on most occassions.

You do know what I mean about 1-2's don't you? Holding LB when making a pass? More movement than a nuns bowels after her first curry if you do that. I always use it - even if you don't find the original runner for the 1-2, a marker might track his run allowing space for others to receive the pass.

As Langdale says, hold LB/L1 when you make a pass and that player carries on running.

Hold L1 and press X x 2 and the player automatically plays a 2-1

You can even chip it over the top from a 1-2. I've scored some awesome goals leaving the defenders utterly bewildered by my pace and movement.

*awaits Mark to try out new tactics*

Thats just stupid, with all the money they put into making a game like this they cant get the AI so the player does this automatically? I have to press a button to remind someone to run? Even if this does work i'm not impressed at the way one has to go about doing such a thing, surely setting my team to all out attack should be enough to get people running but no apparently i have to remind them by holding a fucking button.

I think it's to sort out those who read the instructions from those who can't be arsed and expect to control everything via telepathy.

I cannot believe you didn't know about that function. No wonder you can't do it!!!!

Holding down a single button that gives you more attacking options etc... Jeez what a ballache.

I dont buy games via the proper sources, thus i dont have such luxuries as an instruction book.

I still dont think its a great solution, the player just mindless sprints forward after playing the ball, often running into no-mans land and still leaving me no option. Unless you're faced with the last where you can play it inside and see the player sprint in behind i dont see a massive amount of use for it. I'd rather they'd just put the time and effort into getting the players to do it automatically through AI instead of waiting for a prompt, if i'm playing football i dont expect to have to tell everyone where to go everytime i get the ball at my feet.

It still only gives you one decent option for a pass as well, the rest of the team remains rigid as fuck.

The awful thing is, you have to press a button to start the game too. They've yet to announce flatulence control. Maybe that's an idea for Kinect 2?

Seriously though Mark - you are expecting waaaaay too much from a football based video game.

Not really, PES gets players moving without me pressing an extra button, its done it for years.

I think FIFA has started doing things just for the sake of making a new feature, it was perfectly fine when these things happened automatically but they keep making more and more of it manual and dressing it up as a new feature. I feel they're just needlesssly overcomplicating it.

That's EA's commitment to realism for ya. I'm currently playing for Seattle Sounders in the MLS while they get the career mode bugs fixed (not holding my breath) and they have more movement than Wolves.

When I made the switch from PES to FIFA I hated the lack of off the ball movement (full backs were a big bug bear of mine) it ha however improved in recent versions. Are you using the the attacking and defensive tactical options in the customise formation screen? With this you can set forward and defensive movements for indivdual players, ie you can have a defensive midfielder cover for an pusing on full back or encourage your wingers to cut inside etc.

I didn't see anything for specific player movements in the tactics screen, just things like build up speed, pass length, pass risk, all based on stupid numerical scales, none of which seem to make a hint of difference.

You should be able to amend the individual positions of each player and give them either a defensive or attacking mindset. Haven't needed it myself as all my custom formations carried over from last years game.
