The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

I tried a few games last night with tactical defending turned off. Hated it, got a lot of red cards as I'm already used to the newer (and much more useful) sliding tackle. It took some getting used to but I'll keep it now.

edit -- Side note, I tried editing the preferences for game speed and like the game a lot more. I put speed, passing, and shooting on something like 65 or 70 instead of the default of 50, and the game is a lot less cumbersome now.

Impressed with the new collision and injury system, Fletcher went up for a header won it then nutted their player. Had to go off injured with concussion. Still not managed a win as Wolves but I did manage to walk all over Bray Wanderers as Barca.

Still finding it difficult to win the ball back though.

Langdale...take a deep breathe.

Fifa 12 includes commentary from ITV for cup games, I'm sorry to have to break the news to you!

I can't get it until Tuesday, gutted.

Surely you can change it so it's always Martin Tyler and Alan Smith all the while because if i have to listen to Andy Townsend then i will have a mental breakdown.

Getting on my nerves now, on World class its virtually impossible to win I score 3 they score 4, no matter who I play as or who I'm playing against.

I've won one game all day, every team passes the ball like Barca whether they're 1 star or five, I had 23 shots in one game 18 of them on target against some no mark Australian team couldn't even score.

I'm loathe to turn the difficulty down as every game I create dozens of chances, but as soon as I score the opposition waltz up the pitch and I'm powerless to stop them. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Final match of the night Inter 1 v 1 CC Mariners. 25 shots on goal, on target 13 hit the Post twice, them 5 shots 2 on target. Too be fair Every time Schneider had the ball i felt the urge to shoot, just like he always does.

Downloaded and played the BF3 Beta. First thoughts: man it's hard! There are some people on there who have had this for a while and know it inside out. You will die. A lot. And most of the time you won't have a damned clue where the bullet came from! Graphically it doesn't look as polished as either the videos online from the PC version or as the CoD games. But the game mode and tactical element is superior to any of the CoD games. Rush is what you get to play: as an attacker you have to destroy 2 enemy positions before your reinforcements run out and it unlocks a new section of the map, where you repeat the process until you have destroyed 8 positions. Defending you have to stop the enemy destroying the positions by wiping out their reinforcements. It's nothing new from previous Battlefield games, but it is a good mode. Join a squad and work together and it gets better, as long as your squad are willing to work as a team. The map is strange: you start outside in a park, once you destroy or lose the first 2 positions you go underground. You end the level with the final 2 positions back outside on the streets.

Langdale, I have a feeling that some of the other guys we play with won't make the switch to try this: it takes you out of your CoD comfort zone and it is hard, especially at first and I have a feeling that they might try the demo and go, "This isn't as good as CoD"...Maybe I'm wrong, but it is different, it's not as fast, it's not as slick but it is better IMO than any of the CoD games I've played, simply because there is loads more depth and opportunity for playing tactically. No perks, no killstreaks, nothing like that: you improve your weapons loadout as you progress and gain XP, so you can upgrade sights, weapons, secondary weapons etc etc...4 classes to choose from, as in Bad Company 2: assault, engineer, recon and medic. Get in a squad with one of each and it should make for a lot of fun...

I found it tedious personally. Rush is anything but. They should have just stuck to TDM for the beta. I know of several people that have cancelled their pre-orders already due to the graphics being nowhere near the PC version and the fact it's really slow gameplay.

I'll still buy it for the SP though.

Cheers chaps. I'll certainly give it a go, but I have heard quite a few people who have said they're disappointed with it - this from non-COD players who loved BF2.

Sounds about right.

My copy of FIFA is sitting in my bag at work. This afternoon is dragging so badly...

Yeah, having had a bit more of a go, it's a tad underwhelming. Maybe it's the map, maybe it's the game mode (I preferred Conquest and Squad Deathmatch on BC2), but certainly the graphics are far removed from what they've showcased on the videos. And they really need to put a limit to how many snipers there can be at one time, it seems like everybody and their dog is sniping away like a bastard (quick-scoping is impossible though, Langdale!)...I'm still going to get it and if it underperforms I'll have time to trade it in for MW3...

360 - ECT Quirk if anybody fancies a game. I'll be mostly playing Ultimate Teams this edition as well.

You been managing to do that? I'm on PS3 and it keeps disconnecting me after the game has finished so instead of winning its saying ive lost.

You could get onto the ultimate team website before release, and I had 5 free gold packs waiting for me. After the official release day, all of my cards disappeared... :(

I managed a couple of games before it kept booting me out. Had 2 H2H games won 1 drew 1.....

I really think this Beta is doing more harm for BF3 than good. Totally the wrong map and game type to showcase what battlefield is all about. Not helped by the map, at least on PC, being insanely glitchy and bugged beyond belief at times. I did mange to get on the caspian border servers for a while and it was absolutely fantastic running across the field looking up and seeing 2 Jets dog fight while a mass of anti air fire shot up at them from the ground. Metro is just horrendous though and at times it's actually impossible to arm the first mcom station because if you go anywhere near it you end up glitching through the floor and getting stuck under the map. The worst part for PC though is the constant disconnections. I rarely get a 2nd round in before I'm booted from the server with a "you have disconnected/timed out from the server" message. When this does happen you lose all progress you made in that round regardless if you just unlocked that fancy new weapon or not (I had to unlock the M249 4 times before it actually stuck!).

Love some of the touches they've put in it though such as the tactical light/laser sight blinding you. The glint on sniper scopes so you can see them camping in a bush. Bipods are awesome when you want to lock down a corridor. Would agree though that it's hard as shit when you first start. First round I was something like 0-9 and wondering what the hell is going on. I just think they've let themselves down with the map choice.

Had a quick go on BF3 - very disappointed. :(

I'm not going to give up on it, I'll keep going and I do understand it's a different experience to COD, but I didn't feel it was any fun at all. I didn't mind the BF2 demo, and to be honest if I'd have played it more I would have enjoyed it but there is something I can't quite put my finger on.

Graphically, I was expecting a lot better too.

And good grief - HOW many snipers?!

Seriously underwhelmed, but I will keep trying it to see if anything 'clicks'.

There's plenty of YouTube footage of the multiplayer on Caspian Border with all the vehicles available from the PC Beta. It looks much better but it's just a massive expanse with no real objectives other than protect such and such a checkpoint.
