The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Are mammoths tricky to kill as well? I need to get a mammoth tusk for a mini task and presume it has to be from a live one!

I can't get near the fuckers because of the stupid giants.

It doesn't have to be from a live one. I've avoided taking on both mammoths and giants so far. They just scare the bejesus out of me! I found a tusk in a cave (can't remember which cave though, sorry!), but I think you can buy one from the shop in Whiterun or Bitfen.

Giants are slow though. I spent a few minutes at low level firing arrows into one until I backed off a ledge. He just looked up at me whilst I carried on unable to get to me. Though the first time he fell he did get one hit on me that killed me outright.

I reckon the combat style needs to change to suit the circumstances - especially when you get to higher level stuff. HW's conjuring up a flame atronach is a great strategy - you can keep the battle at a distance. If an enemy's using magic it also means they waste their magicka on your conjured creature allowing you to get in and waste them with a weapon afterwards if that's what you prefer.

If your enemy is using magic against you, it may be better to use a sparks spell than flame because sparks will drain their magicka.

I just clicked on this page by mistake. Was a bit odd, expecting to read about Owen Coyle.

But while I'm here...this Skydrim thinkg looks popular and is now half price; is it worth it? I've never really got on with games that aren't sports related. MW2 was entertaining, but I couldn't hack it online. BioShock held my attention for a while, though it gets on my tits when you get stuck on a bit, and you know you need to find/read *something*, *somewhere* but don't know what and end up just scouring rooms picking up everything.

What's it all about, is it OK as just a single player game?

Wish I'd just bought it now and not asked for it for Christmas. Oh well, it'll be worth the wait. Arkham City will keep me going until then.

I'd highly recommend Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare too, that's a fucking awesome game. I could play that for hours just riding around on my horse shooting zombies in the head, the graphics are that good.

Time to go and have my first crack at Skyrim, thank you Mr Postman.

I'm a giant lizard running around with a child like sense of wonder, i like it, i'm doing bugger all constructive though.

Nice, got sneak up to 100 last night.

Cool. What perks have you taken in stealth. I'm up to 97% and level 22. Just started taking the perks - the 15x backstab for instance, but not advanced the chain to shadow warrior yet. that looks an immense perk but there's quite a chain to get there. I've got about 12 perks in hand I think so could take them all up to shadow warrior with a few to spare but I may want to take them in some of the magic areas.

Which of the stealth perks have you found the most beneficial?

Sneak is one of the essential skills to max I out I reckon.

I don't think there is any really essential skill. Each one takes you down a different playing path. You don't have to play sneakily - I think it probably makes dungeon crawling a lot easier, but there are a number of other routes a character to go. I haven't topped out sneak in any of the earlier games and I'm only doing so now because I think I'm gonna enjoy the perks.

I've got them all now but without doubt the added damage for daggers and arrows are immense. The other chain isn't as good but the Shadow warrior one (the last one) is amazing. Worth the useless silent roll and light foot perks you have to take to get to it.

you can't get to shadow warrior from the backstab chain can you? I'm just reluctant to waste them perks. I haven't taken the steady hand ones in archery yet either.

I have no idea what you're talking about with this chain/perks business. I've just chose to upgrade Magicka the two times i've levelled up.

Zelda is fucking great btw. My favourite game of the year. I'm at 41 hours and am getting near to the end. I reckon it'll clock in at about 50 by the time I'm done.

For anyone that's liked a Zelda game previously it's a must buy.

As well as raising one of those three attribute levels you can also take a perk per level in a skill area (eg in each of the different magic areas (conjuration, restoration...) fighting areas (one handed, archery, two handed) and in many other skills). these will massively enhance your effectiveness in the game, though aren't completely essential at low levels at least. i've been playing with 10-15 perks in hand since level 14. I'd say don't jump in with the perks until you know how you want to play, though if you're not sure, taking them in sneak is probably a safe bet.

I have almost certainly wasted 2 perks in that case.

When you go onto the skill menu to level up, you choose one of the 3 main things to level up then you have that massive sort of map almost with all the different paths on it, i was browsing a few things but didn't really see anyway of choosing a particular path to follow or perk to obtain.
