The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Quick question for Hereford/Loonse/nimrod et al who have played far longer than myself. I know there are several 'Guilds': the Companions, College of Winterhold, the Dark Brotherhood, the Bards and the Thieves. Is it possible for you to do the quests for all of them or if you are a Companion, say, does it prevent you from doing quests for some of the others?

Quick scopers, abysmal spawn points, totally inconsistent latency, it needs patching quickly because it's so bloody frustrating at the moment. It's ruining an otherwise ace game.

Skyrim is far more tempting, and with Arkham City and Uncharted 3 on the way for Christmas, it needs to sort itself out!

Think I might start the companions quest tonight - it sounds like you get a lot from it.

You been drinking?

Also - any tips with alchemy? I was shit at chemistry at school and I keep wasting ingredients.

Try eating some ingredients, you can learn some of their properties that way which can help in mixing potions. Other than that, I'm crap at making potions too, I'd say 3/4 of mine fail. But if you do eat ingredients have some Cure Disease potion to hand, otherwise you'll get people constantly saying "Do you feel alright, you look ill?" to you, which gets a bit bloody annoying!

Quest for the week: buy a house.

Dunno where I'm going to get the money to do so, but I'm sick of lugging all my crap around with me (if I see a rare jewel or book, I'm having it) and want to get on the Skyrim property ladder before the bastard dragons see prices soar.

Definitely need to do this! I'm at my carrying capacity (and I have a necklace that allows me to carry 25 extra weight!) and I have a follower (Lydia) who also can carry no more! I think I'm what you'd call a 'hoarder'...

have hardly touched the game tbh Toon. Langers is already ahead of me in mages guild quests. I've done a couple of companions quests but decided against sharing their blood for the time being. not joined anything else yet or touched main quest.

In past games (and I didn't really play oblivion) the only one I think joining could prevent joining others would be the DB, but I'm pretty certain in morrowind i was in thieves, db, mages (college equiv) and fighters so I'd expect you can join the lot.

Toon - you can join them all, despite some conflicts of interest....although I don't think you can complete both the Imperial and Stormcloak quests. That would be for your second playthrough!

Get a house in Whiterun - it's good because it's near the shops!

If you ask Lydia to pick stuff up rather than giving it to her, you will find she really is a fantastic pack mule!

I've been told I can buy a house in Whiterun, but I need 5000 gold.

I don't think I've got 1000 yet!

Langdale - Forget about the quests for a while and just go into random dungeons & caves exploring. Profitable and good fun.

Smithing is also your friend!

Did that. Went into a pretty cool looking cave I came across on the walk from Whiterun to Winterhold. Some old dwarf settlement apparently.

Anyway, there were some mechanical things down there which didn't like me very much, and subsequently killed me in 10 seconds flat.

I took the wimpy option of leaving them alone, turning back and continuing my walk to Winterfold.

I have some Dragon Bones and Dragon Scales that weigh a lot, but don't really appear much use at the moment. I don't want to sell them because I have a feeling that once my smithing skill is increased I might be able to make some good weapons etc from them. Am I wrong, should I ditch them?

I have yet to collect a bucket but other than that, I hoard FAR too much shit.

I'm really not sure whether Skyrim will be my sort of game. But you bloody lot are making it sound really appealing! Might have to go and purchase it now!
