Things that make you SAD thread.

Mr Jelly, I think that is the first time ever that I have been referred to as posh !!!!

Very sorry to hear that Frank, though suspect that both you & I are coming towards an age when this is more likely. Hopefully you have memories of good times to remember.

Thank you, yes we have some great memories, and fortunately some were caught on video camera earlier this year.

When you need your mom but she's 3,552 miles away :(

My Mum died 13 yrs ago, but only have to look at a picture I have of her at her 80th birthday party (which was a joint party for my eldest's 21st) to feel the spirit which encapsulates her perfectly.

It's a picture I cannot look at for long without getting upset.

The Scary thing is Parkin my nan is 80 next september as well as me being 21 in November does make me sad is it may be same sort of situation.

Funnily I don't get the same feeling with my Dad (or with pictures of him) as he died a lot earlier (no doubt the trauma he had during the 2nd World War & the stress of his job in the last couple of years of his life was a part of that). He was always somewhat remote, but my Mum was the rock which the family was secured by & even 13 years on has the ability to effect deeply.

full respect for him serving in the 2nd World War as he along with many millions saved our arse from being German.

Landed on the D Day beaches 2 days after the initial invasion. As an observation officer for a light artillery unit spent the next year on the front line.

Never really talked about it to us - what I know of what he faced has come from diaries we found after my Mum died & we could search her archive.

Mate, I have full respect for all men & women who fought for a country in those dire times. The fact your Dad was in the battle most people know is more than respectful.

The disappointment that is my dad's new car.

It looks reasonable enough, got a bit of poke and it's a lovely to place to sit but my word is it an uninspiring drive. It's completely devoid of any feel or substance, it's like you're playing a driving simulator or something none of the controls feel like they are physically attached to the car.

Great to be a passenger in and I imagine it's comfy as anything on a long motorway haul but there's no enjoyment to be had, not one bit.

Still, at least it's got a DAB radio so Kerrang is available for a slight silver lining.

Volvo S60

He had a 159 previously, wonderful thing, shame they ended production 18 months before they expect a replacement to be made. Bloody Italians.

At what point did you imagine a Volvo was going to be a thrill a minute fun ride ?

On the other hand my brother was in an accident with a lorry in an S40, and the policeman said that if it had been a lesser car he wouldnt have walked away from it !

I wasn't expecting fun but I was expecting it to have some presence.

He had a Passat before the Alfa and that was a weighty bugger, not fun but at least you could tell what was going on. There was some weight to the controls, it had substance and it made for a much more pleasant experience.

The Volvo is a pretty hefty lump but it's like you're floating around in a cloud. My pissy little Clio is more physically demanding to drive, it makes for a really odd drive when there's no feedback from any of the controls. Everything just feels so vague, very odd thing to drive, there isn't even anywhere to put your left foot either!

The Volvo is just being good at what it is designed for - comfortable spacious motorway mile-cruncher. Your Clio should definitely be a more demanding, fun drive.

159's are gorgeous. Dad's hopefully getting one to add to his Abarth 500.

My manager's got an Abarth 500, he rarely uses it for work though.

I'm hoping to get myself a megane sport at some point next year, might need to wait for a raise to fund it's petrol thirst though.

I had a Megane (saloon) a couple of cars ago. Not massively engined and certainly not the sport. Cracking car though, and a really responsive drive.

Next car I am breaking away from Renault. Either an Audi A5 or C Class Mercedes with lots of big engine and bells and whistles is on my hit list.

Talking of which our Jeep is giving up the ghost, 190k+ on the clock, had it about 2 years brought 2nd hand from a relative when we moved.
It appears that the reservoir for coolant is always empty, after topping up it's just disappearing and when driving just cuts out...So off to buy a newer car for the school run today.

I feel sorry you guys as ive got a 2000 1 litre corsa that has only 72k on the clock. It runs like a dream, I dont understand why some people these days dont run their cars into the ground.
