The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

I've just moved up to my new student house, and can't connect to xbox live anymore.

Anybody on here connect using Virgin?

Well after taking nearly two days to download, I finally had a bit if a sesh on the Fifa 12 demo last night. Having played with all the teams, I seem to be best with Manchester City. I won my first game against Arsenal 3-1, but what I will say is - I'm really not sure on this new defending thing. I'm all for a tweak here and a tweak there. But this is a pretty major change and now the standing up running tackle is pretty much impossible. I've lost count of the number of times I've clicked the tackle button, only for the computer to nip inside, square it and score in to an empty net. It's going to take a long time getting used to it.

I don't really like it.

If i'm honest I am pretty poor at it and thats on intermediate but even if i put the difficulty setting down and start scoring some goals and winning games i find the other team has over 90 percent pass completion, which is of course very unrealistic.

Yeah I'm pretty horrible at it as well. I played world-class in FIFA 11 and have a hard time winning on intermediate in FIFA 12.

One thing I noticed with defending is you can't just go up to someone and spam standing tackle like before (obviously). But. If you use the L2/trigger button which makes you square up and track them, THEN use the standing tackle, your poke is much more effective. Of course, with the new movement system, it takes longer to recover, so don't miss...

No idea what difficulty I played on originally but I've had no where near the same success since. Couple 0-0's (won the penalties) and rest defeats. 1 game not helped by the most ridiculous red card I've had on a game. Standing tackle won the ball and didn't even touch the bloke but I can only assume because he was "last man" he was off.

Really don't like the defending on it though. Can't help but feel they've re-worked the entire defending side to justify the inclusion of this containing rubbish. I don't want to contain, I only play 5min halves. I don't have time to mess around containing a guy running down the wing. Just let me put in a tackle. Even the slide tackles seemed to be much more restricted on how far they can reach. Seems you have to be all but standing on the players toes before being able to make a slide tackle that will actually reach the ball. I'll probably get used to it and in the long run is more representative of the real game but it just doesn't feel right. Get player into position then hold button and let the computer do the rest. That's the impression it gave me anyway. Dont believe I can track a player back myself EA? Still end up buying it though.

The proper PES demo was put up last week also. Have to say not impressed at all. Didn't make a great start forcing you to watch what seemed like a 10min trailer that was virtually identical to the first demo's intro. Either make it possible to skip or do what FIFA does and introduce the new things in a tutorial so it might at least be fun to learn about. Then there's the game itself. Can't help but feel the active AI thing is only introduced because they know the AI is rubbish and have no idea how to fix it so decided to do what FIFA tried 5/6 years ago and just let the player control off the ball runs.. The AI on fifa at times can be rubbish but more than not you can get by with pressing the LB button to send the nearest player on a run. Then there's the ball physics which seem to follow the rule of once hit it stays hit. Regardless of distance travelled the speed/power on a pass never seemed to alter. Crossing annoyed me also. First cross I put in went flying out the other side the box. Naturally I thought fair enough bit too much power. Next time almost no power because I wanted just a little dink to the near post, same result.

The containing thing may be better when the option comes in to change the halve times. I think you can only play 3 mins each half on the demo.

I'm downloading the PES demo as we speak, I just dont fancy the new Fifa at all after that demo.

Yeah sliding tackles are much harder in this one, though players are much better at avoiding them which is kinda nice as far as avoiding cards.

One big thing I noticed is, and maybe it's just the teams I've played, there isn't much of a speed difference between players.

True. The short games in the demo would be what's making it look worse for me. Even with 5min halves though I'm not sure I want to be spending the time out of possession holding 1 button so I can watch some synchronised running down the wing. In full game it might make more sense and no doubt by Fifa 13 it'll be natural. It's what I loved about the old PES games and their changes year to year that made it a whole new game to play. I'm just not sure it was needed. You already had the jockeying that you could manually use to do the exact same thing. I'd have rather a system used around that than this automatic one they've gone for.

I remembered the reason I gave up playing PES. The gameplay is smooth enough but the actions of the players motion are only dictated after the ball is moved. In Fifa you have 360 degree motion on your player so you can move into a space you think the ball or player will run into, in PES thats still not in the game.

You can actually turn the new tactical defending off in the controller settings on the fifa12 demo which takes you back to the old style of defending which i didn't think was in need of a revamp.

Will you be able to turn it off in the full game ?

Not sure although if it's in the demo to change it i should imagine it will be.

You will be able to turn it off, online however will be tactical only.

I'm currently the #1 Wolves player in ALL OF FIFA 12, WOOHOO!! :goal:

:D

edit -- Also, I can't believe Hennessey is only a 75. I sold Doyle and Kightly and bought Welliton, the rest of the squad is the usual.

Wolves aren't eligible for the new EA Football Club feature yet, since there are only 18 fans playing. The good news however is that Wolves fans appear to be better at fifa than most others.

EA Sports season ticket. Personally I'd rather have the game then a download, I cant sell a download later on. The cheapest deal I've seen for the Ultimate teams edition is £41.97 at Asda..

I've just spent the last two hours playing the Pro-Evo demo.

I've had more fun and enjoyment and 'get in' moments in the last two hours than I have had in the last year with FIFA.

Sorry FIFA - don't care if you've got the commentary and the names - football video games are about fun and Pro Evo wins hands down.

I've got so used to the Fifa 360 player movement, Pro Evo movement is like the titanic.

??

It lets you download it before it comes out. It's not you buying the game. The download expires when the game is officially released. I bought the pre-release via Amazon for $40.

Season mode is so much better, but a lot harder. I started a new career and sold Fletcher/Kightly, then bought Chicharito. Well 3 days before the transfer window Dickhead Doyle comes up saying he wants to leave and the board forces me to sell. So now I have freaking ebanks blake as my second striker since I was broke and couldn't get any deals worked out in time.
