The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Playing through Single Player Borderlands.

I'm not normally a FPS fan but this is great - really different. It's like a FPS/RPG...a cross between Half Life and Fallout if you like.
You can buy it for £6 on E-Bay now. I recommend it if you fancy a bit of cheap fun for a few hours.
The co-op is supposed to be fantastic but Mrs HW won't stop playing Plants Vs Zombies!

I enjoyed Borderlands. So many weapons!. Sometimes it got a bit annoying with all the go here, kill x amount of y and then come back. The amount of weapons you got though made up for it. Also can't blame Mrs HW for not stopping playing PVZ, put many hours into that myself. My save game got wiped though and haven't been able to persist through it again. Early levels are a chore when you're used to having all the plants to choose from.

Finished Deux Ex : Human Revolution recently. Great game. Would have got the non lethal play through achievement had I not gone guns blazing in the first 10mins :(.

MW3's Elite thing finally got it's price, £35 for the year. Gameplay videos haven't really done anything for me as it just looks more of the same for another £40 plus the possibility of an extra £35? no thank you. Definately BF3 for me. PC first but no doubt will buy it on one of the console boxes too at some point so I can kill those I know who aren't getting it on PC.

I admit I am playing PvZ on my ipod touch. It is a fantastic game and anyone who has not played it has missed out on a gaming classic.

I'm told the boss fights in Deus Ex are a pain...is this true? Can you take the wrong path (ie stealth/hacking) and then struggle to beat them?

It's putting me off the game.......

My play through was pretty much a Stealth/Hacking one. The boss fights weren't that much of a problem for me but I'm pretty sure I got lucky on the last one. I weren't sure what to really do on the 2nd but got through it by mostly using all my health kits. First 1 wasn't even worth being called a boss fight and that was using non lethal methods. I just took the last boss battle with lethal weapons and it took a couple of attempts but eventually when I did beat him it was because he stood in one place. I don't think he was supposed as he never did on previous attempts. The boss fights are a pain as they are completely out of context with the rest of the game but weren't really that much of a hassle. Definitely didn't spoil the rest of the game for me.

Finally got round to completing AC Brotherhood last week. Excellent game looking forward to Revelations.

It certainly does - looking forward to it.

Fifa 12 demo is now up on the 360, 1.4GB download. Played as Arsenal and won 4-0. Nasri and Fabregas (3) the scorers. How long have they had this demo ready?. Seemed to play well. Interface is much cleaner and nicer to look at. Impact engine was superb as there was very little players going through players. Every tap on a player seemed to impact the player model but didn't always effect a players movement which is a shame. Only major complaint is they seem to have re-mapped some buttons. I played 11 on alternate button settings and now X is standing tackle rather than A and RB is to bring over an AI defender to help rather than X. Spent most the first game tackling thin air from 10 yards away.

Cheers mate - didn't know it was up. I'll download as I watch the footy.

I've been trying to download this since i got back from work and it's stuck on 41 %. Might just give up. From what I've read it seems to be pretty good, the defending is meant to be a lot harder.

Good lord I suck at FIFA 12. Didn't score a single goal after 4 games. I went from losing 4-0, to 3-0, to 1-0, to 0-0 though, so maybe if I'd played one more... :D

It feels a lot more realistic than previous versions; it flows much better. The defending is most definitely harder and positioning matters a lot more than going in for a tackle. Also, sliding tackles are nearly useless.

It's bloody hard! The simple standing tackle doesn't seem very effective anymore.

Practise.

But you're right - it's tricky to master!!

I went through all the teams and it's ridiculous how easy barca is to play with.

It seems that Elite is nowhere near as bad as I thought - I hadn't realised there was a free version. That does put my mind at ease slightly. No way I'm paying anything extra on top.

And all these BF3 videos I see are making me moist - it's still got the upper hand for me.

I've already pre-ordered MW3 but will also get BF3.

Well after taking nearly two days to download, I finally had a bit if a sesh on the Fifa 12 demo last night. Having played with all the teams, I seem to be best with Manchester City. I won my first game against Arsenal 3-1, but what I will say is - I'm really not sure on this new defending thing. I'm all for a tweak here and a tweak there. But this is a pretty major change and now the standing up running tackle is pretty much impossible. I've lost count of the number of times I've clicked the tackle button, only for the computer to nip inside, square it and score in to an empty net. It's going to take a long time getting used to it.

Once you do, it really is a big improvement - really impressed with the new build
