The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Apparently they're limiting "squads" of friends to four people only, and supposedly you won't be able to party chat with anyone outside your squad. Kind of sucks if you ask me.

Bad Company 2 had Squad Team Deathmatch with 4 (or was it 6, I can't remember?) squads of 4 players. It was insanely good fun, better than any mode I've ever played in a CoD game. Totally reinvented squad play especially if you were smart and had different people playing as a different class, eg 1 sniper, 1 heavy weapons, 1 medic etc. You really had to start to work as a team, so much better than the CoD stuff where essentially it's every fucker looking out for themselves.

Been playing Magick and it's fantastic.

Mario Marathon 4 is currently under way at http://www.mariomarathon.com/ . They've been going over 44hours now and have raised $55k for Child's Play (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/). I believe their target is $120k this year. Fair play to em, it's a long haul as their only half way through it yet.

For anyone that plays PC games, Team Fortress 2 is now free, forever http://www.teamfortress.com/. This has been my most played game of the last 4 years. It can be as serious or as fun as you want it to be and is just a superb team based shooter.

Almost got the 1000G on Mega Drive Collection. It's a bit of a slog, as some of the games aren't just bad, they're fucking shit.

Bonanzo Bros, Altered Beast, Flicky, Super Thunderblade - all utter, utter guff. To think they're on the same system as Sonic, Streets of Rage etc shows how far the system came. Those early Megadrive games are just so bad, and so basic.

Loving some of the better games though - Sonic Spinball in particular is a great laugh.

Fallout New Vegas - 70 Hours Played......it feels like I'm nearing the end.

One of the greatest games. I always play a goody in RPG's, I can't go against my instinct. In this game I'm aligned with some really good and really bad guys....and so far I'm keeping them both happy.
I'm evilnice!

If all games had the standard of this writing and this voice acting then we could never complain.

Also just finished Red Dead Redemption. Pure class and also one of the great games. Games just get better & better,

Now there is Deux Ex 3, Skyrim and The Witcher 2 to play. Thats another 2 years out of my life!

To me, watching a film is now so.......boring. I want to be involved!

Get me in Pulp Fiction - I'd play that game!

Playing assassins creed brotherhood at the moment and have to say I'm really impressed! The fighting is much better and it just seems a much more polished game! I can't wait for the next one!

Great game - I've really enjoyed the last two. Have you seen footage of the next one? It looks amazing.

Yet to go onto multiplayer though - must see what it's like at some point. Oh, and start the Da Vinci DLC which I've got a code for.

Ah, the Da Vinci code. Very good. You're cleverer than you appear.

I play Runescape online, if anyone else does.

(Shoot me now).

I just got into the Assassin's Creed series. Gonna go ahead and go in order.

I also got a Kinect and have been playing Dance Central. Don't judge me.

Mmmmm - I now realise I am nowhere near the end of Fallout New Vegas! Things have happened in the game that I did not anticipate.

It could be another 50 hours yet!

Top!!!!

I'm going to restart New Vegas tonight; I got a fair way in and got bogged down in something I couldn't do (something to do with a load of robots) and stopped playing!

Thought I'd give my thoughts on LA Noire so far. (And bear in mind that I'm only just over half way through!)

I certainly applaud the approach - it would have been so easy to have just done GTA in the 1940's, but the whole game mechanic is completely different. In an industry where the normal method is to 'stick by what sells', it has surprised me how different it is.

The good parts of the game are VERY good - the story is engaging, the graphics - the lip synching in particular - are fantastic, and Rock Star have managed yet again to immerse you in a believable world. When you manage to crack a case using the clues you've found, it does feel pretty good! The characters are superb, the soundtrack too, and it's hard to put it down when you're really involved. It's great fun.

But the bad - and this is certainly something I think Rock Star need to look at should a sequel ever appear - repetitiveness. I read Toon's post about LA Noire on the last page, and whilst I 100% agree that you shouldn't bother if you're looking for a more traditional game rather than playing through a story, I do think that the structure is very limited. Start on a case - go to crime scene - scan for clues - question witnesses - take back to HQ - charge one - get plaudits - start on a case etc.... There's nothing wrong with any of it, but the same sequence of events time after time was a little bit lazy IMHO and it could have been varied.

This part reminds me an awful lot of the original Assassins Creed - a great idea, some brilliant moments, but the same sequence of events time after time, with not too much variation between cases.

Please don't think I don't like LA Noire - far from it, I think it's a very good game whereas AC1 was merely just above average. It's absolutely miles better than AC1. But I do think there's a hell of a lot more to come from such a game. It's a brilliant concept, the acting the best I have seen in a game, but why they couldn't have just mixed it up a little bit I don't know, as it'd have made a very good game into a bloody great game.

LA Noire 2 really could be that bloody great game - I think all the ingredients are there, it's just how it's put together that needs just a little bit of tweaking.

I'd give it a solid 8 out of 10 thus far.

it does seem to be pretty repetitive at times although that does change in the latter stages of the game.
AC Brotherhood is brilliant, the missions are pretty varied and i love the addition of the 'challenges' to get 100 in each mission. Although i think the tank mission may prove to be difficult! I like the 'batman' style linking of combat too. In the other games i just found myself countering the enemy one after the other!

Re-started New Vegas a couple of nights ago. And now I remember how damned fucking good this game is! It will probably be the game I play until Battlefield 3 is out.

I think that's a pretty fair assessment about the slightly repetitive nature of the cases, though as Balloonatic says it does change a bit further on in the game. I'd also probably give it an 8.5/10 or maybe even 9/10 just for the fact that it is trying to do something different and break the stranglehold of 1st and 3rd person shooters.
