I think that's a pretty fair assessment about the slightly repetitive nature of the cases, though as Balloonatic says it does change a bit further on in the game. I'd also probably give it an 8.5/10 or maybe even 9/10 just for the fact that it is trying to do something different and break the stranglehold of 1st and 3rd person shooters.
One other thing I will say about it - the driving aspects of GTA (which were far more important than those in LA Noire) handled like a poor driving game, and the combat like a sluggish 3rd person shooter.
By taking out a hefty chunk of such sections, LA Noire can focus more on the story and the environment which is what Rock Star games do best.
