Loan Watch 2021-22

Absolutely got to be given a chance next season.

What position/role is he playing there?
They move him around, has been an 8, 10 and 7 (ish). Most effective in games like tonight when they play a double 8 behing the striker. Looks on paper what we do, but isn't in reality as our inside forwards play wider

Can we recall him or no?

No reason we can't do that with MGW and Pod/Neto behind the main striker.

If it’s a back three he’d be ideally to play behind the two forwards

if a back four, as an 8 in a flatter midfield three or a 10 in a 4231. Or even coming in off the right.

As well as the goals and assists, he speeds up attacks which is something we desperately need
He'd be great in the 8 role if we do decide to go with attacking midfielders in a 4-3-3.

He has never had a run in the right formation. Play him in the right system and he may deliver . In the wrong system he looks lost .

And now a goal. Too good for the division clearly. As I have said, we’d be mad to sell this summer

A few of the ones I work with haven't be as hot on him and say he plays well but gives the ball away a lot with needless flicks or doesn't play simple enough at times, so interested to see what they say about yesterday.

He’s gonna be another one we regret getting rid of. If we actually played any kind of attacking football/system he’d be great for us.

MGW surely deserves a shot next season, he's had a great campaign and it'll have done his development, and self-belief, the world of good.

Have a feeling we'll cash in though, unfortunately

Blade in peace here.

mon MGW - we’ve probably seen him play more minutes than you(?) - my take on him is this….

Firstly, a helluva talent and potential. The Championship is definitely the right choice for him at his current stage of development - the Prem would be a step too far IMO (currently). You see glimpses of pure excellence from him throughout the game (his sublime goal last night being exhibit A) you look at your pal and he looks at you and you just exhale, no words are needed. He tries things other Champ level players don’t bother with. When they come off they’re bloody brilliant. However, there have been plenty of times when his little flicks and tricks haven’t come off and I’m sure all football fans have known players like it when holding the ball up and laying it off and spinning would’ve been the better option. He needs to learn that the flicks and tricks are great but not to attempt them every.single.time. It does get frustrating.

I questioned his athleticism and strength on the ball at the start of the campaign but he’s proven me wrong in spades. He’s learnt off Billy Sharp on the art of keeping onto the ball and using his body when needed - he’s improved a lot in that regard since coming.

His eye for a goal is exciting too, not afraid of hitting one from anywhere and some have flown into the top corner this season. Gets lots of assists because him and Billy Sharp seem to be entangled by some quantum force - reyt partnership building there between em. Billy is revived by MGW. Their relationship is always evident on and off the pitch.

Due to injuries, MGW is playing a deep strikers role. He’s keeping our other striker McBurnie on the bench. Billy in advanced position and MGW using his engine slightly deeper and looking to link with Billy where possible. It’s working well. So, I’d see him as advanced AMF possibly a number 10 pulling strings in the final third and dropping deep when needed.

The most pleasing thing? His attitude. He’s really bought into us for a loanee. His will to win and his celebrations and willingness to get stuck in is brilliant. His relationship with the fans is top notch too, a real fans favourite.

You’ve got a hell of a player on your books (you know that), we’ll be incredibly sad to see him go and we all know it’s a trap falling in love with a loanee but with MGW you can’t help it.

please don’t waste his talent by benching him week in week out. We had same problem with Dean Henderson at MUFC, should’ve just stayed and built his experience with us.

appreciate the imput fella. Feel free to stick around, most of us enjoy reasonable input from supporters of other clubs.

Thanks for that, good to hear about his development and his progress, especially pleased about his attitude which had been called into question on here.
Some Wolves fans are still saying 'yeah but it's only the Championship' personally I'd like to see him back here next season, but only if we start playing a brand of football that involves passing the ball forward more than 3 times per game. In the past we've only really used him in cameo at the end of games, usually when we're desperate for a goal or desperate to hang onto a lead, don't want to see him in that role again, would fuck his development no end.

BLADE- Thank you for that. MGW is a wolves lad but he is very much marmite as he has had chances here and not taken them. That said he has been played out of position which you correctly identify as a 10 or AMF. It is , however a postion that we need and perhaps this season has moved him on enough to warrant a berth in the prem with us. It would be great if it worked out , but as you also say he can try things a lot that dont come off and that gets the groans going quickly. Good luck for the rest of the season, and thank you for your comments. Most appreciated.

It's complete folly to assess his Wolves career to date, he's hardly played for us. Made his debut as long ago as January 2017 but he's started 13 league games for us, ever. One more than Willian Joke who was here for about four months.

66 appearances , 13 starts , 1 goal and pretty much none of those apprerances or cameos are as a number 10 or AMF. You are right that we cant fully judge until we play to his strengths. If Bruno sets up with a back 4 we may get that chance next season.

I can see the conundrum you have with him as you probably wouldn’t do what we’re doing by relying on him a lot. He’d be a slightly smaller fish in your pond of talent. I think he may be the type of player who relishes being one of the best players on the field hence the confidence to try different things but maybe he wouldn’t feel that your gaff. I don’t know, I don’t watch you boys regularly apart from cameos on MOTD.

The bottom line is, the loan has really worked for us and probably for you too. He’s come on leaps and bounds.

Our record with loans in recent years has been appalling (they end up being stuck miles out of position or not playing at all, just wasting everyone's time) so it's heartening to see one work out.

This doesn't mean we've forgiven you for Paul Stancliffe, mind.
