England World Cup Squad

There's obviously a great deal of affection for Motson in the game and 50 years of broadcasting is no mean feat, but he's been truly appalling for at least the last 20 of them.

He hasn't done a tournament for ages tbf. Euro 2008 was his last one.

I can't give you an answer on Lawrenson. Lazy, unfunny (not that a commentator/pundit should be actively trying to be funny in the first place) and no insight.

No Hoddle as a pundit!

I can tune him out during the game itself.

Excellent use of Seinfeld giffage.

Sky saying Joe Hart will not be part of the Squad

Jinky is no doubt scrawling 'Ruddy for England' on a bedsheet as we speak.

Shame Will Norris ruined his chances with that game at Sunderland or he was sure to be on dat plane.

Good to see Wolves fan Jacqui Oatley there. Hopefully she bigs up Neves at every opportunity.

Whilst I hope he plays and has a good world cup, except if they play England, I really don't care about anything outside England, just like I don't care what's happening at Vile, Or Blues in the regular season I just concentrate on Wolves

To be honest it should make little difference. The third choice keeper as good as never plays. However in Southgate's case I think it's a good thing that he can't get there with Hart in the squad, dither on the eve of the first game (especially if one of Pickford/Butland makes an error in a friendly or something) and go with Hart. If he isn't there then it isn't an option.

He'll still pick some absolute tripe. He'll still have Henderson as captain. I now get the feeling that he's going to recall Cahill and Welbeck.

Tbh he hasn't got a massively high bar to aim for. If it's "be better than 2010 and 2014" then that isn't hard. We should get through the group which we didn't manage last time (albeit it was a bloody hard group and we got really unlucky with the draw, we also played ok against Italy and Uruguay) and we were atrocious in every game in 2010 (at least it was in keeping with the tournament in general).

What will the squad be?

Pickford, Butland, Pope.

Rose, Bertrand, Maguire, Stones, Walker, Jones, Trippier, Alexander Arnold

Dier, Henderson, Alli, Sterling, Loftus Cheek, Lallana, Lingard, Wilshere

Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Wellbeck

Final guesses, anybody?

Pickford, Butland, Pope.

Tripper, Alexander-Arnold, Walker, Stones, Jones, Maguire, Cahill, Bertrand, Rose

Dier, Henderson, Lallana, Wilshere, Loftus Cheek

Sterling, Alli, Lingard

Kane, Vardy, Rashford

I'd be tempted to bin off one of the defenders and take Lookman, but there's no chance of that. I'd also take Tarkowsi, Smalling or Mawson over Cahill, but I reckon he'll worm his way back in unfortunately. Wouldn't be surprised to see Young over either of the LWB's either.

I like Lallana, however he's started one league game all season. Not sure you can go with him. Especially if you're taking Jack Wheelchair as well.

Think you're a RWB heavy there, we don't need three. He might have the weird intention of playing Walker at RCH but even so, you don't want to overload on options there. If there were an issue at the back then Dier could move into the back three and put Walker back where he's supposed to be.

I have an inkling that Sessegnon will go.

Not what I would choose, my guess:

Pickford, Butland, Pope

Walker, Rose, Trippier, Bertrand, Cahill, Maguire, Stones, Jones, Young

Henderson, Dier, Loftus-Cheek

Alli, Sterling, Lingard, Sessegnon

Kane, Vardy, Rashford, Welbeck

The ones in bold should not be going but I think they will. I'm not mad keen on Maguire, Henderson or Lingard either.

Why do they persist with Lawrenson?

I am pleased Motson has retired though - I've never understood the adulation for him, he's always been terrible and has been getting worse over the past decade.

Really good to see Vicki Sparks as one of the commentators BTW.

Equally, why Kilbane. He's woeful. Not Lawrenson woeful, but bad enough.

Not in anyone's squads above but I bet Young and Delph will both go.

The trouble is, if Dier has to move back into defence we're horribly light in midfield. Loftus Cheek doesn't play there for Palace, so you'd be left solely with Henderson.

If we're losing a RB (which would be the one to go to give another attacking option), I'd be dropping Trippier as TAA has been brilliant recently, both defensively and offensively.

By the way I agree with you that at this point, Lookman would be a better wildcard than Sessegnon.

I've put Jones in my predicted squad and he can at least theoretically play DM. Has played there for England in fact. And for United against Real Madrid...

TAA has had a few games recently where he's been found wanting defensively. Roma away immediately springs to mind

You could lose Betrand and replace him with Delph who could double up as a shit left back / central midfielder.
