The Road To Germany 2024

I'd leave:

Trafford, Guehi, Dunk, Gallagher, Jones, Gordon & Maddison.

Tough on Gordon but Grealish just offers something a bit different & has the experience at international level. That means it's between Gordon/Eze (I don't think he can take them both). Bowen should get in because he can play wide and through the middle. Tough call there.

The squad does seem to be lacking in the middle, but then I'd be happy with Wharton in next to Rice (will never happen) and Bellingham ahead of them.

Pickford
Walker Maguire Stones Shaw
Rice Bellingham
Saka Palmer Foden
Kane
Is that about as strong as we get? Maybe TAA in alongside Rice and Bellingham pushed up instead of Palmer?

Central defence the obvious weakness (again).

You can take Bowen as an option through the middle if you leave one of Toney and Watkins behind. Otherwise he's fourth choice RW and fourth choice CF - that shouldn't be getting him on the plane, particularly if we have issues elsewhere (which we do).

Its similar for Maddison - he can't play alongside Rice and he's behind Bellingham, Foden or Palmer (Eze for me as well based on current form) as options at #10. Good player, but that's probably the most depth of talent in any squad in one position in the world at the moment.

Gordon has to go, double figures in goals and assists and he has that directness which I think we lack a touch of. Don't underestimate his work defensively too. I'm very much in the Eze camp, but the more I look, I can see him missing out for Grealish given his prior experience.
Good points to be fair. I think Southgate quite likes Bowen, though - but I can absolutely see your point.

That's actually a decent squad he's picked. He's actually considered form and fitness which is novel for an England manager. Thought he'd play safe and leave Branthwaite and Quansah but fair play. Can see how he takes Shaw as he's the best option and worth the risk.

I’m actually very happy with that squad, we know our weaknesses. I think we trump everyone on a midfield and attacking sense but fall down a bit with our defence.
Biggest concern is Southgate not playing Foden central behind Kane where he’s best.
Teams don’t win tournaments 3-2 in every game it’s often tight 1-0 wins here and there which I’m not to sure we can do.
In all fairness I think the rest of Europe don’t want to meet us.

I'd have taken Mitchell although a 5th Palace player in the squad would be mind-boggling. Shaw unlikely to make the cut, Gomez offers nothing going forwards and Trippier has been a bombscare this season on his favoured side let alone moving him over

Thing is, that's where Bellingham is best too.

I'd still go with this. As the defence is vulnerable I think Rice and Mainoo are ideal leaving the front 4 to be quite free.

Urgh.

The BBC used to be innovative with their panels but this is a nonsense.

The BBC has spiced up its coverage of the sporting summer by signing Wayne Rooney as a pundit for Euro 2024.
Rooney will be joined in Germany by former England teammates Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Hart – as well as Cesc Fabregas, David Moyes and the Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

ITV, meanwhile, has announced the Tottenham manager, Ange Postecoglou, will be part of a team of pundits including Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Graeme Souness in Germany next month.

Rooney 🤡 Ian Wright 😂 Sourness 😡 Neville 🤮 postecoglou 😴

'"Ange" is probably the most interesting of the bunch, the rest is just same old same old.

How is Souness still getting a gig? Very rarely has anything interesting to say.

Love Wrighty as a bloke. but think he usually talks in platitudes
Tbh I think they all do, I only really pay much attention when it's Shearer and/or Wright, all the rest are just white noise when I'm watching football.

Much rather G Neville did co-comms on England games
