England: Euro 2020 squad

There is a chasm between Henderson and Rice and it's not the way round you think.

Henderson has been very good for Liverpool this season and decent for England for 2 years.

Rice is a nothing midfielder, he's been woeful at Molineux two years running, a complete passenger. The archetypal he plays for West Ham so Fleet Street build him up to be something he isn't. He's a centre half being played out of position.

In midfield he's an average passer, slow, doesn't read the game well, doesn't score or create. If he played for Palace and we hadn't panicked into nicking him from Ireland then he'd be as far off the England side as he deserves to be.

Is there a new CM called Rice? You clearly couldn’t mean Declan.

I absolutely do - he’s not the finished article, and has dropped off a bit this season - but he is mobile, good defensively and can pass the ball forward unlike a lot of the other options. It’s an extremely weak position, but he has potential to be really good - he’s still only 21, so has his whole career ahead of him.

Henderson has wijnaldum and Fabinho to do all his tracking, movement of the ball and creating for him So all he has to do is jog around the centre circle and point - he can’t do that with England as he has to actually contribute something, which is why he’s always shit.

Never used to rate Henderson but when I've him seen this season he's been very good on the whole

Rice is a centre back playing in midfield IMO. Sure he’s strong, wins the ball back well but doesn’t play progressive passes that often or create many chances. I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the team but Southgate seems to like him.

I wouldn’t have Henderson as the deepest midfielder either ideally but he does at least play well there for Liverpool these days when Fabinho isn’t playing.

We have an issue in this position as all we really have are people who will run well, rather than a Carrick type that we would waste anyway. We are a few years off the likes of Bellingham having an impact on the midfield so may have to wait

For now I’d go Henderson (4), Alli (10) and Oxlade-Chamberlain as an (8) between them two. When he’s fit he’s good he’s just never fit enough ... (edit: that or just stick Foden in Actually)

Henderson has had a great season, calling him shit is just silly.

The tournament being postponed until 2021 may help Foden be included. Dont think he would have gone this summer as he still doesnt get anywhere near enough game time, could change next season.

You would think so as David Silva is sadly finishing, so there will be a space in the City midfield.

I've slated Henderson tons in the past but he really has stepped up, he was superb at Molineux this season.

Surely Maddison or Grealish wpuld be in front of Alli now?

They've probably had better seasons (though I do think Alli's performances have been underrated this season - especially under Mourinho) but I think Alli is the best player. I also think if we keep playing 433, he provides a good balance as he not only can create but makes runs beyond the forwards which those two don't provide as they are different types of players.

I think both of those two will get opportunities in the squads eventually (Southgate seems to be quite wary of Maddison for some reason) so we will get to see.

Yep - the power of world class coaching! The way Henderson imposes himself physically on games is particularly impressive I think. When he was younger he had a very Edwards-esque way of running around aimlessly.

That was basically his role under Brodge. Stevie G could barely move any more so he was the quarterback, Coutinho is never going to do any defending so Hendo just had to run around for the pair of them. He looked shit doing it as well.

I'm not saying he's a tremendous footballer, he has a lot of limitations but I've been impressed. Good leader too.

Also add me to the Declan Rice non-fan club, he's about as mobile as I am and he comes across like a right prick.

FWIW:

..................... Henderson

......... Gomez - Stones - Maguire

TAA - Henderson - Maddison - Chilwell

.......... Sancho - Kane - Sterling

Would be my team.

If you are playing a back 3 then I'd pick Coady over Stones without a doubt. Stones is too old now at 26 to overcome his major mistake a game issue.

Ox for Maddison and that’s be my team too.

Edit - yes and Coady as TT says.

He'd definitely be in the squad. But he's never been called up before. You can't just go chucking him in the first XI without some familiarisation in a couple of friendlies first.

What I also like about my team is the two triangles of players from the same clubs at CB, WB, CM. That would definitely help when building out from the back and also in defending on either side.

Edit - Well Maguire used to be...

Couldn't have Maddison playing in a midfield two myself.

Think I'd go 352 rather than 343 as I'm not sure there's a creative midfield I'd trust in a 2, and that formation will bring the best out of the full backs. Not only aren't you doing that in a 4 you are also exposing their weaknesses.

-----Gomez-----Coady-----Maguire
TAA----Henderson---Maddison----Ox----Chilwell
-----------Kane--------Sterling--------

Think I'd go Alli over Ox, but like the look of that side TT.
