West Ham (A) - verdict

Yeah the thinking behind it is sound and does Nuno credit.

I would hope the final destination isn't just toothless tippy tappy stuff, I love our cavalier counters and sweeping crossfield balls. Hopefully we can eventually have greater possession but stamp our own identity on it

You’d imagine he’ll want to keep the good stuff we have (structure, good defence, Switching the play, speed on the counter attack), And just add more possession and goals, especially against teams that sit back.

I mean we don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. Literally our only problem was having 5 players plus Rui behind the ball in possession against teams that sit back.

Of the 5 players ahead of the ball, the WBs were wide with the forwards leaving only Raul in the centre.

Now an easy solution is play a CM who is going to get in the box. Another is make the forwards play inside the penalty area allowing the WBs to provide width.

Issues with doing that were Jonny is right footed, Doc can’t cross and Adama wants to run to the byline. But having LWB, LF, CF, CM would already be a massive improvement.

Last season September results were equally awful and Watford on the 28th the only win having lost to Everton Chelsea and Braga

I thought Semedo looked tired/not quite at 100% fitness. Hopefully the coaching team will develop this.
Hoever looked good when he came on, and contrary to most, I thought Silva looked interesting. At least he had an intensity and tried to influence things.
I was less sold on Vitinha than most others, but he wasn't poor.

Agree that we need to have a conversation re Boly. He isn't imposing himself as much as he is able to.

The other thing that has stood out for me so far, is we seem to have ditched the switch of play. For 2-3 years our main outballs have been from Coady or Neves. I guess Nuno is wanting to ensure we're not too predictable, so Boly and Saiss seem to have a lot more freedom to pass forwards, but more centrally. This is usually riskier, and also is into more crowded areas. So unless our control is spot on every time, or the pass is pinpoint, we're losing possession. I think this is where we are missing Podence.

Neves is also looking to get into the box, or further forward a lot more too.

It's certainly going to be an interesting transitional period.

I don't think we've ditched the switches as much as every one we hit seems a yard short.

The problem with the switch to the right now is Adama. Our switch of play used to be into space but he’s so static off the ball that any long ball to him usually finds him receiving it while he’s tightly marked instead of a ball into space for someone to run onto which was what gave us so much success, but as I said about Doherty a while ago that tactic has been sussed so is now ineffectual. Same on the left without Jonny, he’s a master at finding those spaces and is great at receiving the ball and using it, Vinagre can’t do it yet and in the opposite side nine times out of ten Adama just loses it.

This for me is where the play really needs to evolve as our trademark move is now most likely to lose possession.

My problem with Traore is that he never looks to link up with anyone when he receives the ball. He goes steaming past people head down, which can be effective and often amusing, but at the end of it, it's pretty much the same looping ball to the penalty spot every time. And that's assuming he manages to get the cross away before he runs it out of play for a goal kick. I'm not sure he's intelligent enough a player to link play properly with the RWB or cut inside and do the same with the striker.

I'd have Podence or Neto starting the game every time ahead of him. Someone with a bit more creativity like Lemar would actually be an improvement IMO. Especially now we have Semedo with pace to go outside on the overlap.

He needs a kick up the arse. He's been shite in every game so far.

Podence would be perfect in front of Semedo but as he predominantly plays on the left it would be Neto I presume. Which again I’d have no problem with, he’s a very good player and would vacate the space Semedo would take up when coming forward, he’s also good at tracking back. I can’t see it though, I could be wrong but I think Nuno is determined to make Semedo/Adama work, it’s just concerning as Adama seems to be playing at 18/19 levels again. That’s why I just can’t see us bringing Lemar in as with Adama and Neto covering the right hand side it would mean dropping Podence to get him in and personally I wouldn’t be doing that.

Interesting times and it’s Nuno’s job to sort it and make it work.

Adama seems to have gone backwards, he went through a spell last year where he was pretty much unplayable every game. There were signs of him adding a bit of football intelligence to his game.

I think a spell coming off the bench will do him good. I’m not convinced he would have started on Sunday had Podence not been injured.

The parts of his game people are criticising here haven't ever really evolved. The awareness of his team mates once on the ball going full pelt and movement when he is out of possession. I got battered by others on here for pointing out during the Man City game that his lack of movement can make other players look bad, but it's true.

His crossing has improved as has some game smarts, like winning a corner off the defenders legs. That said we had many bigger issues than him on Sunday

Agreed, a couple of those at RWB but that's no excuse for a lot of the really, really simple mistakes he's been making.

No assists since Bournemouth in June either, that's dismal. He needs dropping.

His crossing has improved but 90% of the time its still wrapping his foot round it into a general area, and yes there are bigger issues but as eluded to by someone else on here, apart from the four or five runs a game you are essentially playing with 10 men when he's on the pitch, wholeheartedly agree with bring him on at 60 mins and he'll scare the shit out of a knackered defence.

I think at the moment it’s possible he’s been playing through necessity as Semedo only just arrived then Podence getting his knock. It’ll be interesting to see what Nuno does when everybody is back fit. I think he’d work better as an impact sub as well to change the dynamic of the game.

I feel like Adama is so conspicuous, whether good or bad, that he's an easy scapegoat. Neto and Vinagre weren't above getting their heads down and tearing off into blind alleys too against WH. So I usually cut him as much slack as possible, but I have to agree with a lot of the sentiments here.

Don't think he's our biggest problem, but the two issues I have with him are that he's a magnet for the rest of the team, which can be really disruptive when he's playing ineffectually, as he's always Plan A, and also I just don't understand why we have him crossing the way he does.

When he can cross and link up with Raul it can produce goals, but usually it's successful on a quick counter when Raul is in the right place and not crowded out. When Adama dicks around on the byline for two or three minutes and gives the opposition time to regroup its pointless, especially as we don't really have many players steaming forward with him. Those looping crosses close to the GK when we have Raul wandering off and Joao or someone on the edge of the box are so frustrating

Agree that for now Traore should be an impact sub (if both Podence and Neto are available.)

If Nuno is going to stick with trying to adapt to this new style then Dendoncker is the first name on the team sheet for me whether that is in a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2. When we don't have the ball we don't have another player like him who has the energy levels to constantly press the ball not giving the opponents time to settle - if we are going to have Semedo (and for now Vinagre) so high then it is even more vital as A - it doesn't let the opposition midfielders set and have time to pick passes or transition quickly and B- as he has played CB numerous times in the past if the situation dictates it he could seamlessly drop back and cover one of the CB's - an example is when Boly joined a couple of the attacks vs West Ham.

Due to the recent form of Boly and Saiss I can see why people want him in defense but I really think it's imperative that we have Dendoncker in the middle at the moment.

Generally speaking I agree with you but in that City game it wasn't all his fault, the only incident that really sticks in by head was Neves laying a simple pass back to him and he put it across him too far in front giving him no chance, it was a poor pass rather than a playing not making an option.

Traore is such an oddity though, it's really weird, he's obviously got outrageous pace but it's not like he's just a pure roadrunner, he's got really good close control with the ball at his feet and a sharp change of direction particularly when you consider the size of him. It's not like he needs to restrict himself to getting chalk on his boots and looking to go down the outside of defenders every single time, he's shown the ability to beat players and make use of that pace coming more centrally on occasion to great effect but seems that whenever he's out wide he can't shake that old habit, if he could start to vary that a bit more then he'd make it so much more difficult for teams to marginalise him, even without any improvement to his movement or interplay.

Sometimes things crop up in the game that teams just can't seem to find an answer to, think back to Stoke under Pulis and their long throw routine, it caused mayhem for a good while because people just weren't used to that sort of threat and with all the big lads they could bring up from the back they took full advantage of the chaos it caused. I remember being a game where a team went out of their way to avoid conceding throw ins down the side of the box, at least once putting something out for a corner in lieu of a throw as they fancied their chances of defending that better! I suppose they knew they couldn't match Stoke physically in the box so the only option was to cut off the supply that made them dangerous, I think there's a similar thing with Traore now, teams know they generally don't have a hope in hell of stopping him getting to the byline but with Jimenez the only really threat in the box you don't have to, just steer him toward the corner flag and let your centre halves clear up the mess, West Ham even played Cresswell almost like a second left back to cover him off and pick up any low crosses ahead of the centre halves. If Traore had tried turning inside Masuaku at any point he'd have rendered Cresswell useless instantly and opened up the option for runners to the edge of the box rather than be reliant on the almost impossible ball to pick out Jimenez, it would stop opponents being able to make such rigid plans to deal with him if he could vary his play in that way and opens the space up for the wingback behind him to get forward in a way you'd more typically expect.

It can be rely frustrating with him sometimes because he does have moments when he displays that variation, I can half remember one such run against West Ham and he ended up running through centrally before slipping a good ball down the outside of their centre half for Neto, if you could get him into those positions more often then he'd put the fear right up plenty of centre halves, the worry of him running at you whilst forward players are trying to run into space off you. He has got a decent eye for a pass at times too, it perhaps needs him to revisit his 'slow down' policy that saw him get some improvements from his crossing output, use the pace in shorter bursts to get away from defenders and then take advantage of those bits of space to get his head up rather than just sprint full pelt toward the next victim. He's obviously on another planet but it's something Messi has always been brilliant, controlling his pace and timing those bursts of acceleration to make defenders look completely pathetic, he'll spend 90% of the game pretty much walking around and then next thing you know he's lit the afterburners and caught everyone cold.

The problem is for that 90% everyone else is having to work at 110% to make up, don't get me wrong I have never witnessed anyone with such ball control and speed (and I saw Neil Emblen regularly ! ), I just think for 90 minutes he's an extravagance we can not always afford.

I agree - he really makes us less than the sum of our parts, and often one-dimensional - Neto and Podence both so much more savvy about team play - Adama is a great option to change things up, and exploit tiredness, but not as a starter.

We know he has the ability, he'd be a nightmare if he decided to cut inside and mix it up. The amount of times I've felt like he's really had the space and opportunity to drive into the box and cause havoc, either draw a foul, or be able to cut the ball back or fire it across goal... but then he goes on the outside anyway and, sure, Raul occasionally gets his head to a cross, but more often than not it easy to deal with or spannered out for a throw-in.
