Two guesses.

1) because everyone else already has them so keep it that way for parity and also to protect the investment.

2) Incase they get transfer embargo for breaching FFP

Jack Harrison agrees to join Everton. Completes his medical (seems he has a clause that allows him to leave on loan if Leeds are relegated). So all sorted for Everton......or not as Villa want him and it seems he wants to go there instead.

Edit: Ninja'd

We have justified gripes about our transfer business but Leeds have made an absolute balls of it post-relegation. Ridiculously included a clause in nearly everyone's contract that they could leave on loan if they went down, so they're losing players and getting hardly any money in. One of the few they sold in Rodrigo had a tiny release clause too.

and 2 that don't have the clause are refusing to play

Boehly offering higher wages?

Liverpool's recruitment team could do with firing into the sun. Scrimping around over Lavia initially when Southampton were clear on their asking price from the outset. Then bidding £65m more for an alternative who only ever wanted a move to Chelsea, which in turn has pissed off your original target, who you've ended up bidding £10m over the original asking price for in any case.

Brighton and Southampton are laughing all the way to the bank.

And to top it off, he's going to Chelsea for £10m less than the Liverpool bid. Exceptional work!

Why would any midfielder go to Chelsea right now, just to play once every 10 games?

On a tangent, Southampton who were the worst team in the league last year have now cleared about £110m on 3 players all with healthy profits and FFP returns. I wonder how well we'd do in the same situation?

I don’t really get why players seem to love going to Chelsea. I guess it’s just money but they go through 8 managers a season and aren’t even in Europe this year

Slabhead wants £7m to leave Man Utd
Man Utd say no, just leave you fat headed twat
West Ham get bored and pull out of the deal
