Second group phase of the 1982 world cup in Spain was definitely 3 team groups.

England drew with West Germany and Spain, but West Germany went through as they beat the Spanish.

Thanks Paddy, I thought it had been tried before.

It was when they had a group stage in the second round too, as funnily enough 24 team tournaments don't work...

16 is perfect for a Euros, 32 is perfect for a World Cup, I don't understand what's wrong with these people. You're going to turn UEFA/CONMEBOL qualification into a procession and end up with criminally weak AFC/CAF/CONCACAF/OFC nations going through to get battered for two games.

Have a look at who missed out in 2014 and try picking out a decent spread of 16 teams, balanced across the various confederations. Can't be done.

As paddy power said this morning, just means England will get knocked out the World Cup by Burkina Faso,Iceland, legal and,la la land or narnia. On the plus side,England will be able to say they finished third in the group. Scotland still won't qualify either.

There it favoured West Germany playing in the first and second games as they knew beating Spain put them in the box seat. However, as West Germany beat Spain 2-1, then any England victory could have been enough, hence sending a broken Keegan and Brooking on to try and get a goal in the last ten minutes.

Also, the 1982 second stage only one team went through so the chances of manufacture were actually a little lower. If two can go through with a 0-0 in the last match, then you are going to see some shit that makes West Germany v Austria look like the Matthews final.

No draws it seems! All games in the first stage to go to penalties to try to avoid manufactured results

Ah good, so tons of teams playing for 0-0s and taking their chances on pens. Sounds like a good plan.

Probable distribution

UEFA 16
Conmebol 6
Africa 9
ConcaCaf 6.5 (bear with me - there is still some ironing out to do)
Asia 8.5
Oceania 1
Host 1

Lets assume that Asia get 9 and Concacaf get 6 simply because of the number of unions.

Failure to qualify from Conmebol will be quite an achievement.
With Australia in Asian qualifying, then New Zealand are a walkover to make every tournament unless the Cook Islands or Tahiti sort their fucking shit out.
Even with Australia in Asia there are still 8 other places. China, Japan and South Korea will be certainties every tournament and there will still be 5 other places up for grabs. Iran, Saudi Arabia and such powerhouses have chances of being there every time, unless Bhutan continue their rise.
Africa - virtually double the number of places. Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal. These have all been worthy additions, but there are some right rubbish that are going to make it.
Concacaf - fucking joke. USA and Mexico will obviously always make it, but look at the rest of the fucking federation. Some absolute fucking mince like St Lucia or Barbados now stands a reasonable chance of qualification.
UEFA - 3 more spots will barely change the qualification process. It is as difficult to get into as the Euros used to be before expansion.

I wish we would just fuck off FIFA and not bother with this shit.

Lincoln v Ipswich replay will be live on BBC 1

48 team world cup here we come. Vote passed unanimously.

More $#@!e first round games it is then.

Absolute crap. International football is shit. I have no desire to watch even bigger tournaments with even worse teams beating England in the second round. A greed based decision taken to make more and more money from the likes if you and me. They can fuck off. I would sooner buy a season ticket to a league 2 side than support monery bags international football and its over paid under performing numpties

The BBC will be showing the Lincoln City v Ipswich Town FA cup replay on 17 January. It is brilliant that the Imps are getting national coverage, but they could have done without the replay. Still a full house and TV revenue will be a massive boost for the club.

Manchester City have been charged by the Football Association for failing to ensure anti-doping officials knew where players were for drugs testing.
Clubs are required to provide accurate details of training sessions and player whereabouts so that they are available for testing at all times.

Stat of the year:

Nile Ranger has a criminal charge for every 2.08 career goals.

Diego Costa gone full #headsgone and hasn't trained for three days after interest from China and has been dropped. This could cost Chelsea the league if it goes on too long...
