My head would be gone if someone dangled just shy of £600k a week in my face

Chelsea losing out because one of their players gets his head turned by money.... Real shame that.

I mean you're right, but he must be on about £200k a week at Chelsea. Once you have your properties, your cars, your holidays, you've looked after your family...how much money do you actually want or need? If he played until his contract at Chelsea runs out then retired one day later I'm sure he'd never want for anything else in his life again.

Could probably afford to get half his family to similar levels of wealth on that wage though, maybe it's not all about him.

£200k a week on a five year deal is £52m. Let's be naive and assume he pays tax properly, so halve it. £26m. Plus whatever he's earned already at Atletico etc. Plus what he gets in endorsements and the like. Plus whatever that money's earning in investments in the meantime.

You can't spend it.

I'm naive enough to think that sportsmen that already earn more money than they could have ever dreamed of when they started their career would value achievements above a few dollars more.
"Grandad, show us all your football medals"
"Fuck that kid, look at my bank balance..."

I think a lot of it depends on where you come from, if you've grown up here with the comfort that whatever happens you'll always have food then an extra 100k may be immaterial. If you've grown up experiencing and seeing direct poverty then you can pretty much never have enough money (cf Mobuto etc)

Elsewhere, Forest takeover is off.

Good old Fawaz. Doing brilliant work down there, long may it continue.

I was talking to my Forest STH mate on Wed night and he thinks they are in serious trouble and could easily get relegated. I said they'll be alright once the takeover goes through...

He's been a bit quiet since I mentioned it had fallen through.

Diego Costa has now reached an "economic agreement" with Tianjin Quanjian in China, but won't be sold before June.

So presumably he'll be off in the summer.

It's an absolute joke that players of Costa's calibre are going over to China for nothing other than the money. Something needs to be done about Chinese clubs offering that ridiculous kind of money as well.

I'm not sure what can be done that the Chinese authorities aren't already doing. They have a limit on foreign players.

You are simply not going to get a salary cap when there are 600 chinese billionaires and the president of the country wants this to happen.

I imagine that this is how the Bundesliga and Serie A felt when our big clubs started hoovering up talent.

I agree with your first point but not the second. PL clubs have been paying way more than the rest of Europe bar Real, Barca, Bayern and PSG for the last decade or so, just because another league now has even more money is not a reason to legislate against it irrespective of how obscene the amounts involved are.

Precisely my thoughts Tony.

The other thing is, Costa has reached an "economic agreement". What does this mean? He has agreed a wage packet? Pretty sure that Roman Abramovic might have something to say about the affair, and he can definitely afford to have Costa rotting in the reserves for the rest of his contract. That value is basically the fuel bill for his yacht.

Wonderful viewing the Chelsea fan meltdowns about this.

Oh, the irony. The sweet, delicious irony.
