Next Manager chat.

Our last promotion wasn't. If you mean our last two promotions to the PL then I would say that this reflects the tactical inflexibility of Jones and McCarthy whon only knew one way to play, irrespective of whether we had the players to play it.

I don't think you can dominate football matches with two central midfielders, two wide midfielders and two strikers. It means a wide man having to tuck in (causing imbalance) or a front man having to sit deep (leaving the other isolated). I just don't think it's an effective formation these days. There are exceptions to the rule eg Leicester last year- but the key for them was Kanté who controlled their midfield plus the speed at which they could turn defence into attack.
If you were talking strictly the Premier League I would tend to agree, in this division I think it is different.

I am not against other formations at all I just don't see them working well with the players we have, perhaps that's the manager though.

If this is to be the answer (though not sure what question they asked to get that) then the least worst option from the names bandied around. Hopefully he has had enough time out to reflect on where he went wrong.

Despite the takeover & the untold millions we now have :) possibly a reflection on where we stand as a club just now

He went wrong in taking the Blackburn job.

His CV isn't too bad. Back-to-back promotions with Norwich. An FA Cup final and a League Cup semi with Aston Villa and 3 successive survivals with a volatile dressing room. Lerner was well into his financial pull-out at that time.

He's not the most exciting candidate and I too wish we went further into the field but at least we're avoiding Pearson, Sherwood, and Ince.

I don't think players like Costa, Cavaleiro or Texeira would ever work in a 442. The first two are wide forwards and the latter is a top-of-the-midfield no 10 imv.

The temptation to play any of them wide midfield (or Tex in CM) in a 442 would then get them dropped by a Pearson or a McCarthy for lack of work rate.

Because the two wide forwards will be there to support the lone striker. Agree with you though, Arsenal often play 442 (in theory) and this has never caused them to lack fluidity.

Anyway, my labelling of Pearson as a 442 merchant is because he strikes me as the type of manager who knows no different to 442 and will stick to that formation regardless.

If you're sticking your wide players up in a more forward position, such as Wolves have been lining up this season, you make it more difficult for them to have a hand in the defensive part of the same as their starting position is higher and narrow than if they were in a 4 man midfield, so there's more space down the sides for opposition fullbacks to get forward and double on your own with their wingers, then you get centre midfielders being dragged out to assist and you lose your superiority of numbers in the middle.

A couple of numbers on a piece of paper make nowhere near as much difference as some people like to make out, players having the presence of mind to adapt their positions both with and without the ball is far more important in my eyes, every formation needs a level of fluidity to both cause problems and combat the opponents intentions.

A lot of bookies have closed the betting on the Wolves job. Lambert was 1/8 on Skybet about 5 minutes before they ended it.

Early doors it lets itself down though

"Fans get wooed by the suggestion of candidates like Andre Villas-Boas and Sam Allardyce"

That is not a name that gets anyone wooed
Sadly it does seem to have wooed quite a few of my friends [emoji30]

It's news to Paul Lambert that he's the new @OfficialWolves manager. Nobody's told him. He's still in Germany, heard nowt since 1st interview

They could go for the enigmatic Tim Sherwood, who will one day be a real success as a manager.

.....in charge of pulling pints at the Rose and Crown?

To be honest I am still undecided on all 3 in terms of their position, I would definitely agree on Tex, 4-4-2 wouldn't work for him unless he was maybe a RM (tucked in) with an out and out winger the other side.

Costa does look like I expect a wing-forward to look he seems more wing forward than winger if that makes sense, Cav on the other hand from what I have seen so far (yes its not much) looks more like a winger and might benefit from being deeper.

Weirdly against Blackburn Costa seemed to be deeper and wider than I would like him to be as a wing forward, it looked at times 4-5-1 either way it was a mess.

I hope Lambert can bring some structure whatever formation he chooses, and find the best roles for players like Tex (and actually pick them over our mate Dave)

It would appear that Mr Murphy has direct contact with Paul Lambert.

Tim now backing off earlier tweet, jumped the gun there methinks.

If Murphy is on the ball then Tim II has lost his, since was suggesting it was between Lambert and Pearson after 2nd interviews had been held with them

Christ if Murphy knows him and they are friends we definitely shouldn't be hiring him.

The battle of the journos is more exciting than the list of candidates
