If you were talking strictly the Premier League I would tend to agree, in this division I think it is different.Our last promotion wasn't. If you mean our last two promotions to the PL then I would say that this reflects the tactical inflexibility of Jones and McCarthy whon only knew one way to play, irrespective of whether we had the players to play it.
I don't think you can dominate football matches with two central midfielders, two wide midfielders and two strikers. It means a wide man having to tuck in (causing imbalance) or a front man having to sit deep (leaving the other isolated). I just don't think it's an effective formation these days. There are exceptions to the rule eg Leicester last year- but the key for them was Kanté who controlled their midfield plus the speed at which they could turn defence into attack.
I am not against other formations at all I just don't see them working well with the players we have, perhaps that's the manager though.
