Next Manager chat.

Sherwood didn't do really well at Spurs, they finished 4th in 2012/13 with their highest PL points total ever at the time, they were 7th in the middle of December when he took over, they finished 6th. He lost his first game to get knocked out of the League Cup, he lost in the Third Round of the FA Cup, got through one round of the Europa League and then got knocked out. His reign included getting gubbed 5-1 by City, 4-0 by Chelsea, 4-0 by Liverpool and a tepid 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal when they needed to win. They were underperforming under AVB with a tendency to get thumped when up against decent opposition, flat track bullying their way past bottom half teams, he just carried that on. No-one at all was surprised when Spurs got rid of him.

Incredibly the man Sherwood replaced is the man I would love to see here avb

That's only really relative to the squad he had. Spurs entered that season expecting to make the top four again. They got nowhere near. Ronny Deila had a win percentage of around 63% at Celtic, I'd certainly take that in our new manager if we're just using contextless stats as the criteria for selection, but clearly no-one wants us to appoint him.

AVB won 8 of his 16 league games that season plus two League Cup games and six out of six Europa League group games. So Tactics Tim actually oversaw a decrease in overall win rate.

If Mourinho left Man Utd tomorrow and someone took over and won marginally more league games for the rest of the season, improving their position from 8th to 7th in the process while getting knocked out of all the cups at the first or second hurdle, I would not consider Manager B to be a great success.

If we were to take the most generous interpretation possible of the statistics and saying that Sherwood improved the league win rate by 9% or so (which is flimsy stuff because of sample sizes, but we'll let it go for now), well we have currently won 4 of our 15 league games. So if he got the remaining 31 games and replicated his magical improvement at Spurs, we might win another 10 or 11 of them. Would leave us needing a few draws just to stay in the league in all likelihood.

That is of course if he didn't just doom us to relegation like he did with Villa.

Incidentally, Kenny Jackett's league win percentage in his first two seasons here? A tick under 58%. We all know of course that this is skewed by him having a squad in League One that had no business being there and wouldn't take that stat at face value, much like Sherwood did a below average job with a good squad at Spurs that was fully expected to win much more than they lost, and no-one would realistically suggest that his win rate constituted any kind of achievement.

In fairness I would love avb here as I like his style. I think it suits our current squad and he would attract quality in January. Its been crystal clear for 18 months we need better gk and cb. The new manager bounce has been good fr villa Derby and to a lesser extent Cardiff. Rotherham took a good point at Ipswich this weekend. When will it be our turn to prove myths?

Clough is another Jackett - mid-table Championship is his ceiling, with rare exceptions.

Spiers seems pretty insistent about it being Lambert or Sherwood this morning. Sherwood's obviously terrible, but I'd give Lambert another shot. He failed at improving things with an awful, overpaid squad at Villa, and even then didn't start so negatively there. When he arrived and started trying to rebuild the team with kids in his first season they looked like they had the potential to be something, even if he had to give up and go negative soon after. And it's hard to judge anyone based on having to work under the Venky's, can't blame him for quitting.

Seems he was lied to by the Venky's (shock horror). Agreed to takeover on the basis that if he kept them up he would then get a massive transfer budget for the following season. That fell apart when they announced towards the end of the season they were £140m in debt and had not a lot to spend on players.

Lambert or Sherwood? Really?

Is this the footballing equivalent of the US Election?

I've avoided this thread as I'm feeling pretty low about Wolves atm but that E&S article has pissed me right off. I hope they've got it wrong here.

The fact that we have access to the best agent in football and we're limiting ourselves to those candidates is just utterly stupid. It makes me think that Fosun don't have much of a plan beyond 'get promoted ASAP' and that they'll lurch from one idea to the next throwing money all over the place and hoping it sticks. You need more than that to get promoted from this league, just look at our opponents this weekend. Have we really done away with trying to pick up Europe's best young talent after failing to land Lopetegui, panicking, and appointing Zenga? It's the type of short term thinking I'd hoped we'd seen the back of when Moxey left.

It also confirms that Kevin Thelwell is a fucking idiot.

Spot on. I'm currently trying to convince myself that the article is total bullshit and that we're not stupid enough to be focusing on such a shallow pool.

Is your ex mother in law tied to a contract at present?

Lambert of Colchester or Norwich is fine. Lambert of villa I feel he got broken. The venkys is a clusterfuck for any manager. I prefer him to Sherwood in a straight race.

How many people on here didn't expect KJ to be shown the door even after the media took on board the "we will be working with him". I would take this mornings (yesterday's news) E&S article with a sodium free pitch of salt. I fully expect Fosun through Jeff to appoint whoever they think apt be it off that list or some random Euro manager

Quite. For all we know Thelwell's remit could only have been to find suitable British candidates, but someone else has been tasked with drafting up a list of foreign candidates.

Similar to when the teacher used to ask the "challenging" student to go and count the railings in the car park.
