Man City (H) 25/8 Build-Up Thread

Chelsea 1-0 2011
Spurs 0 Wolves 1 2009
Liverpool 0 Wolves 1 2010
Wolves 2 Man Utd 1 2011

We actually have beaten some of the top sides on our last premier league sortie so who knows/ We may just get something here too.

Did the double on Spurs 09/10, both 1-0.

We beat eventual champions Man United 2-1 in 2010/11. Was their first defeat of the season and stopped them going 30 games unbeaten.

Last time we beat the reigning champs was the month before that, 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Tricky balance. If that's the player that the manager really wants, then we have to back him. When you're at our level it's much more difficult to have secondary targets - you have to make sure they're genuinely good enough. It's like when Locadia stiffed us - we could have gone for some bag of $#@! like Hugill, but what would be the point, he'd have been awful. If you're just aiming for maybe making 6th in the Championship then you can have tons of players lined up as it makes no difference either way.

There's some blame on the manager for not realising sooner that Doherty categorically was not an option in the Premier League, except maybe a "third choice on either side" emergency deal and just grateful to be there for a year. He likes Doherty, no two ways about it. We all have our cross to bear. I bought a Marion album once and they were $#@!ing $#@!.

That Marion album is a cracker IMHO... [emoji849]

One of Jota or Costa will be dropped for Traore, I would guess. Personally I don't care which as both deserve it at the moment. Can't drop both without Cav available though and I don't think Nuno is going to chuck Bright in (and we categorically should not be using Bonatini at this point).

Same team otherwise.

Costa will be the one that is dropped.

Might he chuck another defensive midfielder on in place of Costa?

I don't think he will. We will go with a similar set up to the Etihad last year. So he will either put Jonny at RWB but ask him to play more as a RB or move Bennett over again (doing that would presume Hause coming in and Boly moving to the right, so Jonny is the easy move as less disruption across the defence and Vinagre in at LWB)

We will keep the midfield 2 and then the front 3 to give us the pace on the counter

I wouldn't be opposed to Saiss or even Dendoncker coming in and having us shift to a flat 3-5-2, but don't think it will happen. Nuno seems absolutely married to our 3-4-3 at this point.

Forgot about Dendoncker!

So he might go Jonny LWB - Bennett RWB and then Dendoncker as the RCB

Dendocker won't play yet - don't think he was even on the bench for the first 2 games

Dendoncker ever played RB? He *looks* more mobile than Bennett - low bars and all that though.

Bennett did a fine job there last year v City. Mainly as he didn't have to bomb forward (hoping he is fitter than last year though, he lost control of his legs in extra time)

Yes, he looked ok defensively. I would still be more comfortable with someone who could pass better there though.

Benno has a pass in him. Was it him that put Jiminez through v Everton? (also played a beaut of a ball to Jiminez in the Villarreal game)

Personally I would go Jonny at RWB and Vinagre at LWB.

He's ok and is much better than he was, he's still not that comfortable with it and panics at times.

I'd go Jonny and Vini too fwiw.

----Jota----------Jimenez---------Traore

---------------Neves-Moutinho

Vinagre - Boly - Coady - Dendoncker - Jonny

-------------------Patricio

That's the way to go. Harsh on Bennett maybe, but it is the best chance to contain the best side in English football.
