Man City (H) 25/8 Build-Up Thread

Had 2 full weeks of training now. He will be good to go

If he is ready then fine - gives us other options

Bennett will do in a defensive role out at RWB, but no more than that & would rather not use him there unless there is no other option. Vinagre & Jonny across to the right would be my preferred choice - not sure that that will happen though

Our 3-4-3 will be more 'defensive' than a 3-5-2 anyway. It'll be a 5-4-1 for the majority of the game, changing to 2 up top would give us less cover, especially if 1 of those 2 is Adama Traoré who can't/won't defend. The only way I see Traoré playing is if Raúl becomes one of the inside forwards and Adama is just left up top to do whatever he wants. Even then that's a gamble as he'd put 0 pressure on City's centre backs out of possession whereas Raúlito would chase lost causes all day.

Personally I would go with this

Patrício

Jonny Bennett Coady Boly Vinagre

Moutinho Dendoncker Neves Jota

Jiménez

Forgot about Dendoncker!

So he might go Jonny LWB - Bennett RWB and then Dendoncker as the RCB

I'd be perfectly happy with that, but equally I think that's probably the most exotic change we could possibly see.

Putting Bennet at RWB says that from the start we are going to defend - I am not against him playing there if we have to just think that it sends the wrong signal out to the opposition (& yes he did put in a good pass in the build up for the Jimenez goal)

He's never going to be a rampaging wing back & putting him there from the start puts out a negative strategy

Putting Bennett in at RWB seems silly when already have a right-footed right-back who has so far shown himself to be able to defend and doesn't cross like a League One standard player. The solution to our problem looks incredibly simple - play Jonny at RWB and Vinny left.

I would rather see Bennett at RWB than Doherty though, much more suitable for this game as we're going to be on the back foot for most of the game so need an able defender - and I doubt his crossing is any worse.

I like Vini a lot, but he is 19 and putting him in and it going wrong (c.f. Swansea) might do him more harm than good.

As much as it wasn't that exciting Bennett playing RB worked against city last time, and is infinitely better than doc against sterling / sane / Jesus / anyone else.

There's a lot of faith in Vinagre mentioned above. As I've said before, I don't think he's ready defensively for the Prem but he's probably a better defender than Doherty.

I don't know much about Dendoncker and I'm not sure what Nuno will do for Saturday, but I think it will be interesting.

Doubtful that we will be the most exciting team out there & need solidity at the back, but just feel that starting Bennett out there from the start sends out the wrong signals

He would no doubt do a competent job, but will give a lot less than needed going forward (though probably not that much less than we have seen so far this season)

I guess it depends if Nuno thinks we might have a better chance sneaking a 0-0 or a 1-0.

Unfortunately Rodriguez does not finish work till 6 we leave at 6 back on board for 5.30 so have missed him.

However have my top on with Neves on the back everyone is chatting and shaking hands.
One guy at a port winerie was a friend of Neves and started singing we've got Neves every one from the ship were staring in amazement.

The global brand has started and it's in Portugal
Did you confuse Porto with Lisbon? :p

Have a safe trip, mate!

Vinagre is ready. A HELL of a lot more ready than Doherty

He is!

So basically like getting Newcastle and Bristol arse about face.

Or turning up in Perth and telling your relatives "I am in Australia - we must meet up" and then they say "we are in Brisbane you dick".

Vinny is ready or as ready as he can be. Doc is already playing to the maximum of his ability and it's nowhere near good enough. I could forgive his defensive frailties if he was ripping things up going forward but his crossing is rank and he's far too slow to beat anyone in this league.

Vinny has the potential to be a top premier league player and has shown on several occasions to have all the qualities we require. Let's get him in and let him blossom.

Jonny has been very solid defensively and I much prefer a WB playing on his natural foot (fullback not the same before anyone brings up Irwin etc!!) so hopefully we will see that sooner rather than later.

----Jota----------Jimenez---------Traore

---------------Neves-Moutinho

Vinagre - Boly - Coady - Dendoncker - Jonny

-------------------Patricio

That's the way to go. Harsh on Bennett maybe, but it is the best chance to contain the best side in English football.

Agreed.

I would agree that Oporto / Porto is the best city from the two. The clubs however...

I've been toying with the idea of João out for Saiss. Saiss could act as an auxillary defender when needed and has an understanding with Neves for when we're in possession, it might take us ultra defensive but just an idea. I have loved how tenacious João is though, deceptively strong. Think it'll be Moutinho just something that crossed my mind.
