Man City (H) 25/8 Build-Up Thread

I am worried that Nuno seems to have a bit of a blind spot as far as Docherty is concerned much in the same way that all previous managers had the same blind spot with Edwards. I hope I am proved wrong. Once the Cancelo deal fell through we don't seem to have tried seriously to replace him.

I am not a basher of Doherty on the whole, no point really that job is coverred on here. I really don't understand how he is the only pick when available if Jonny can play there and Vinny is good to go on the left.
I really rate Vinny and think he is as ready as he will be without actually playing in the premier, some of his learning will have to be on the job (ooh err).
If Doc starts this game against Citeh we should look to change it for the last half hour at least unless of course we are still in it (unlikely).

Just because we didn't hear about any others in terms of rumours doesn't mean we weren't trying.

The idea would have been to get Zinchenko signed and then have Jonny and Doherty for RWB and Zinchenko and Vinagre for LWB. In hindsight we probably spent too much time and energy on the Zinchenko deal but reports from a lot of different sources were that the deal was pretty much done the day before, so if the player has had a change of heart that late on, its pretty unfortunate.

I've been toying with the idea of João out for Saiss. Saiss could act as an auxillary defender when needed and has an understanding with Neves for when we're in possession, it might take us ultra defensive but just an idea. I have loved how tenacious João is though, deceptively strong. Think it'll be Moutinho just something that crossed my mind.

If Saiss came in I could only really see a case for us changing shape slightly, playing him as the DM behind Neves and Moutinho with just one AM behind Jimenez.

He wont take Moutinho out. He was brilliant on Saturday.

Be surprised if we change the midfield 2 for this game - Man City are not really a team that are going to go to 'clog' the opposition (they don't need to do that to win) - who we put in defence is more important as however well we play we will have periods when we are seriously under pressure.

Get that right & ensure that we take the limited chances we will have is probably key to the outcome.

Will we win - odds are likely to be against us

Can we win - without doubt yes

Dunno if it is just me, but seems nuts that a few want to drop the defender who has played the best of all our defenders so far this season.

I can see lincs thinking in bringing in Saiss, who last season was positionally brilliant in covering for the wing backs when they went forward. However generally they're not as far forward this season, nor as frequently forward. As a result, Moutinho may be able to use his considerable experience to our benefit in this game.

What worries me more, is we've conceded 2 a game so far. Small sample I know, but we need to improve that. A team as good as man city are unlikely to give us any breaks, so the defence/gk need to be on top of their game.
We also have to hope our forwards (mainly jota/costa/traore) up their games. I can see costa being dropped, but equally suspect that traore will only play an hour. Might be the kick up the arse he needs. Hoping to see the jota of old appear for us soon too. Hoping all of them up their games, as players sometimes do when playing the top teams.

Surprised nobody has dropped Coady for Dendoncker yet, that’s what I’d do. You can have all the lovely diagonal balls you want, he’s cost us two goals so far and needs to up the defensive side of his game.

Dendoncker looks perfect for the sweeper job.

Dendoncker can play those passes just as well/better than Coady as well.

——Bennett-Dendonker-Boly——
Jonny—Neves-Moutinho-Vinagre
——Traore—— Raul —— Jota— —

That’s what I’m doing for. Harsh on Coady but that’s our strongest 11.
:tiphat:

Right then, for those that are in the NB Upper. I'll be in the stand from about 11:45, stood near NU3, watching the telly and (probably) drinking an overpriced bottle of Carling. You're all very welcome to come and entertain me.

Don’t know what time we’re leaving yet, probably around 11:30ish. Should just get there in time to get our seats and stick my finger in Johnny’s earhole before kick off.

I don't think I'll be there much before kick-off either.

Should be there by around then as well.

Please don't stick your finger in my ear-hole.

I think the obvious change, if he's ready to start, is Dendoncker in for Moutinho. We need someone with more defensive bite in there to try and do a job on Silva.
