Man City (H) 25/8 Build-Up Thread

I think the obvious change, if he's ready to start, is Dendoncker in for Moutinho. We need someone with more defensive bite in there to try and do a job on Silva.

Moutinho was absolutely fine against Leicester, arguably better and sharper than Neves off the ball. City's sharp movement in midfield is what Moutinho and Neves defend against best.

If Dendoncker comes in it has to be for Coady as Coady is going to have trouble reading City's front 3 and Dendoncker may well be better equipped to do this.

Not sure why Moutinho is the one everyone wants dropped (purely bias led I assume). I don’t agree with dropping either full stop, but Moutinho has played better than Neves so if anything if it should Be the other way round. Moutinho is theoretically the better player on current evidence (but it won’t stay that way for long).

Don't want to/not really about dropping Moutinho I just was thinking Dendoncker + Neves would be a better mix against City. Don't expect it to happen though, even less so Coady being dropped for him.

I think Doherty will be in too.

A question for those suggesting Dendoncker should replace Cody. Who do they think will take on the role of organising the defence?

That was my biggest concern too. I would think Patricio would do that job fairly well but we don't know how strong Dendoncker is as an organiser yet.

Will be leaving fairly early from down here to allow for possible delays on the roads - in theory could be there anytime after 10am depending on traffic levels

If I'm there early will visit the club shop as haven't been able to see what the quality is like - only seen it being worn by others most of whom would probably take exception to me touching their shirt whilst they are wearing it :icon_biggrin:

Coady was one of our best players last season and has only been very slightly at fault for two goals this season. To suggest dropping our captain and an absolute key component of our team already is very odd.

Substitute Coady for Doherty and you have the same problem. On the evidence so far neither have been up to par. If you have better players play them, no room for sentimentality in football.

Nah, not at all. Doc has always been suspect defensively & with crossing. Coady was a superb last man last season and fantastic at getting attacks started - not sure you could identify any stand out deficiencies with Coady? Plus he is the captain and in his case that actually does mean something.

Coady hasn’t really been bad. Everton goal just call good play. Leicester goal more his fault, but still largely bad luck. If he doesn’t turn he takes it and it doesn’t go in, or it certainly doesn’t glance off him and spin in the way it did. But I’ve seems 100s of defenders do that (turn their back), who teams have paid millions for. Just need to face it and take it

Doubt that Nuno will make any significant changes this early - we have played reasonably well in the first 2 games though with errors which have cost us.

A lot bringing Dendoncker in, but none of us know whether he will improve this team as he hasn't played in it yet - this might not be the best game to trial it. Would still consider that Doherty out & Jonny moving to the right with Vinagre on the left does make sense as we have seen all of those.

It's not the turning that's the problem it's the failure to close the ball down that cost us against Everton and Leicester. Look at Bennett's starting position for the goal on Saturday and where he ends up versus Coady's. If Coady does the same he barely gets the shot off. For Richarlison, if he goes to the ball, he stops being the screen for him to bend it around. It's not a natural thing for him to do as he's not a natural defender, but he needs to learn it and quickly or he will be deservedly dropped.

We were having a similar conversation on Coady last season but then it was the ball over the top him. He got done at least once in the first 3 games (4 if you count Leicester pre-season where he made up for it with a brilliant goal line clearance) he sorted that out, so hopefully the issue he is faced with this season is dealt with the same

I've got to say, after the expectation of last season, it's very liberating to be going into a match we're not really expecting to get anything from.

U18 side setting the tone for the weekend as they lose 6-0 v Man City...

Been reading the Blue Moon forum - some complimentary comments about us, but most expecting a minimum of a 2 or 3 goal win.

Expecting us to try and play football (as if we would dare to do so against them!) rather than just park the bus and go for a draw at home.

Most consider that they have better players, which they do, & this will tell in the end - would be delicious to get a last minute winner to ram it back down their throats
