England World Cup Squad

Anyone watch the England U21s against Romania at Molineux? Was on BT Sport 2. We won 2-1.

Hagi (son of Gheorghe) looked pretty good for them. Better than Bright Enobakhare. Would be a nice cheap signing.

Also liked Radu their keeper.

Yeah watched it really impressed with our youngsters, keeper worried me

They defended very well under quite a bit of pressure at times. Romania are a good technical side.

Had nothing better to do so decided to go the game yesterday. Wasn't that impressed to be honest. England started really strongly and looked like they were going to blow Romania away with their pace and trickery but Romania improved and once they had gotten used to how they were playing we were much less effective up top. Only a friendly but at times they were guilty of overplaying it and trying to do skill moves at poor moments. It was like watching a FIFA game to be honest, all skills and pace. I'm not a fan of our over-emphasis on pace in youth teams, the coaches have a tendency to choose players who are physically more mature for their age and we use this additional strength/speed to our advantage in the youth teams, but when we reach senior level this advantage has worn off and we lose to the sides who emphasise technique over pace.

Thought a draw would have been a fair result. Gray and Lookman did well, Maitland-Niles had a good first-half. Goalkeeper made a big mistake flapping at the cross for Romania's goal but was otherwise ok. Set piece delivery was generally poor from Dowell and Alexander-Arnold who was rubbish. Walker-Peters made a fantastic block at the end. Impressed by Romania's keeper and Hagi. Romania had decent support!

Not sure how but Portugal are 3-0 down to Holland.

Two big footballing nations on some seriously hard times.

I don’t know if you’re taking the piss or not?

It’s exactly the same as it was against the Dutch just with some rotation

I'm glad he's not playing Alli rather than trying to fudge him into a position that doesn't suit the formation. If he takes that into the tournament that would be very unEnglish

Ashley Young starting is beyond belief. He's almost 33 and not good enough, what is he doing playing, let alone being in the squad? I detest Gareth Southgate.

Regardless of Bilic's protestations, the fact that Vardy didn't touch the ball at all during his 22 minute sub appearance the other night is as damning as you can get for Southgate's tactics, especially in a game where the opposition posed little threat and showed even less interest.

At least the Italian anthem was beautifully respected. Just goes to show it can be done.

By that token, there isn't an outfield player in our XI tonight that plays in the exact position they do week in week out, with the exception of Trippier when Spurs go with a back five.

That's quite emotional. So glad the FA made sure that Astori was honoured just as well as Armfield and Regis.
