England World Cup Squad

Yep - I think he works well in this line up

There's something about lingard - he seems like a fairly nondescript footballer but has moments where he'll score a goal or create something. He'll do that more often than luck would allow

I think this system looks good for England.

It's early days and only friendlys but Southgate looks like he's done his homework and learnt how to implement a modern system

I think he's got that criminally overlooked ability 'intelligence'.

He's never going to be a player that bosses a game, beats 2-3 players at will or any of the headline grabbing stuff but he seems pick up really good positions and has a good awareness of what's around him. No doubt he'll be marginalised at United as Mourinho continues his quest to fill a side with outrageous individuals to attempt to cover his tactical shortfalls.

I don't think we suit the system at all with these players. It's dull backwards possession based stuff where the out ball is a cross field pass. Only quick thinking by Lingard, the excellent trickery of Sterling and the top clash finisher that is Vardy have England in front. Our possession in the final 3rd would make Tony Pulis embarrassed.

For everything else that this England squad is lacking, at least we have some natural, genuine out and out pace in the side. Vardy, Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walker, Lingard, Trippier - they’re all rapid - and at least that offers *something* going forward. Just a shame they’re not a little bit more skilful or comfortable on the ball.

Also have to wonder where Deli Alli fits in to this system, because I had him down as a nailed on starter for our World Cup 11.

This may also be an unpopular opinion, but Young is nowhere near as bad as a lot of people make out.

Yeah, he's a strange one. Arrives in the right place a lot of the time, and I think he's a good 'impact' player.

I missed first half, but just from watching this first five minutes (and having watched the second half on Friday) there does at least seem to be a plan. We are still a little too slow in possession but I like some of the positions players are taking in the build up to play out from the back. Sometimes Walker is stepping in, or Stones is coming forward with the ball.

I'm glad he's persisting with Stones as well. Starting to worry about his lack of games as it takes him a few to get going but he was fantastic before his injury this season. Has to be starting in the back three anyway, he's one of the key players IMO for this England side in the coming years.

Tbh unless you play Alli in the system he has at Spurs with Kane he's always looked a bit lost to me. He's not even having a particularly good season at club level either.

There's a lot to agree with there.

Young has done alright. By no means the weakest link. I also note your comment about Deli Ali. Nice conundrum for Southgate, bar the fact that if he gets it wrong he is screwed. I thought the Ox was very good tonight.

On course for another 30 goal/assist season. He's done it at Spurs in a three behind Kane and alongside Eriksen when they play with wing backs.

This.

We've got a lot of good options with Lallana coming back and likes of Lingard and the Ox in good form this season. It would be nice to be in a position where we can change personnel and it not affect our game negatively.

You’re watching a different game to me, then.

Clearly as I haven't seen him pass to another England shirt with a forward pass yet and we're 65 minutes in. He's shite and the worst England player on show tonight by a distance.

Ok mate :icon_lol:

No point in having a discussion with someone who’s made his mind up on a player before a balls been kicked.

Think he’s in a straight scrap with Lingard at the moment, but clearly Southgate likes the flexibility of the latter.

Think the big problem is central midfield, doesn't matter what you've got up top if you can't get them involved with any regularity.

Dier and Ox doesn't work, I suppose in theory they balance each other out with Dier super defensive and Ox recklessly cavalier but in practise you just end up with someone really negative and limited on the ball while another bloke runs around all over the place being a scatter brain. They need someone in there who uses the ball better, he's fairly limited but Drinkwater is probably as good a bet as anyone at the moment, doesn't try to do anything too fancy but his distribution is usually pretty reliable and will help be a bit more direct when required.

I think when it comes to the serious shit, Alli will still be well ahead.

That was a brilliant Italian move. How the fuck did these lose to Sweden?
