Vaccination rate the same as ours.
I had read this article:

"Vaccination rates vary across the continent. Slovak take-up is among the lowest in the EU at 44% while the Czech rate is 58%, in Austria it is 65% and in Germany 68%.
Both Germany and Austria have reported queues at vaccination centres, but they have some of the lowest take-up rates in Western Europe."

Germany 67.7% “fully vaccinated”, 70% one dose.

UK 68.5% fully vaccinated. 75% one dose.

Nothing in it.

Plenty of German teens fully vaccinated, whereas zero here. Skews the figures to look better, but masks the older unvaccinated population

Why have older Germans not been vaccinated? That’s just pure stupidity.

Do you feel the policy is wrong? If so, what would you propose to do instead?

There is no easy proposal and there is an argument to say that letting it rip in schools in September may save lives in the long run now that winter has begun. With all the vaccines available maybe keeping social distancing and face masks in schools from September until the October half term and then a mass vaccination roll out to the 12-16 year olds?

My point was more along the lines that there has been a fair bit of press of late, including from our PM, that rates in Europe are climbing steeply (which is true) without acknowledging that our rates have been high for 3 months and continue to be so. A fair few loved ones have been lost in that time too.

Vaccination rate in over 60s 85.7% in Germany.
Over 50s in UK around 98%. Also UK comfortably in the 90s for 18-59 whereas Germany only 75%.

This is truly mind boggling. They’ve wasted their time vaccinating 12–17 year olds (44%) but their vulnerable parents and grandparents don’t want it…

I don’t feel forcefully (they have been able to have it for months) vaccinating 12-17 year olds is of any benefit (other than the relevant JCVI category who should have already had it). I’ve seen no data anywhere to change my mind on that.

Mask are also utterly pointless. In strict circumstances where they weren’t being touched, worn correctly, replaced every 10 minutes, then yes, maybe some benefit. But none of that is done.

Social distancing also pointless and unworkable. They are all on the same buses and same classrooms. You can’t socially distance without significantly reducing numbers. I also question how much effect that would have as the volume of the room is still the same. There’s still a lot of question marks on transmission. What is the biggest factor? Physical contact, surface contact, breathing in same air? I’ve known countless households only have one person test positive yet the rest of the household is fine without even being vigilant.

On the last paragraph, i doubt our rates have been any different to the rest of Europe for ages, we just test more. And with our high vaccination rate in the vulnerable, cases are actually a good thing and has been the plan all along (as you allude to). Unfortunately people have died, but if they have been double (and triple) vaccinated then what more can you do? We will never have higher vaccination coverage than this. So if we want restrictions now, then next year they will have to be even stricter and then more the following year etc.

You have to draw the line somewhere, and based on the the data available it was correctly drawn in the summer.

They didn’t waste time, it’s that there’s a good proportion of their population primarily in the East who actively didn’t want it. Can’t imagine why older East Germans may be suspicious of their government giving them injections…

The Germans prioritised workers over the vulnerable in the vaccination programme, in a bid to keep the economy ticking over. This hit them hard the beginning of the year and appears to be coming back to bite them.

Vaccinations to be compulsory too come February - I'm all for freedom of choice but when your actions impedes on the freedoms of others then I agree with state intervention
Papper is going to hunt you down like a dog :)

I don't know, I'm still really uncomfortable with this, even though i think those refusing vaccines are bat shit.

If you'd have said 5 years ago that people will be forced to have injections or they won't be allowed to fly, drink in a pub or go to a restaurant i'd have wondered what dystopian shit fuck of a world we were heading into.

Serious question - would you favour them being excluded from society then?

Just spoke with someone in a devolved government, he is expecting a Christmas lockdown if things continue as is.

Question for the German people really, but I don't think there is an easy answer. As soon as the more elderly non-vaccinated are infected it fucks over the health system which causes problems for all.
