Wolves v Stoke: Carabao Cup Rd 2

I was hoping Vinagre would progress well, but he's stood still ever since the game he had in the League Cup at Man City a few years back, that still was arguably his best Wolves game, he hasnt showed better then that sadly. We all can see, and Nuno especially in bringing Marcel in. Sadly when Jonny is back fit there is no place for him.

Other than nominally for the last 20 Adama didn’t play RWB (and even then he wasn’t there). He was also our most dangerous player - tried to do too much by himself at times perhaps.

You may have misinterpreted my post. The need for a LWB and RWB is separate from Adama being piss poor in two games. He's gone back to being really static, receiving the ball and playing on his own. His lack of movement and third person running is so frustrating to watch and in complete contrast to Podence and Neto playing with Raul. It kills any passes over the top from Neves or taking players away so others can move into space.

With Buur and Vinagre being so poor we needed Adama to be like he was in the first half of last season, at the moment he isn't.

I feel like i've been mugged for a tenner.
To be fair my lad's football team would have given Wolves a run for their money today.
Adama summed up today with that late cross where the ball actually landed in my missus's trolley as she did some shopping at Asda. As someone said he's gone back to year one in a lot of what he did tonight.
The performance is way more disappointing than the result for me. We probably wouldn't have scored if they'd have said "just play till midnight".

Carvers you mean ?

Ah ok. I actually thinks it's a purposeful tactic - we are looking to get Adama on the ball more and earlier. So the neat interplay switches to the left with the aim to drag players over and create space for Adama.

As neat as the play was on the other side we still look most dangerous when he has the ball.

I must have watched a different game

One shot on target against championship opposition is appalling from the strength of that team. You cannot dress it up. That was a shit show

I think you're overreacting a touch there, Cyber. Trust me, I wanted to win that - and I had £10 on us to win the bloody thing at 25/1 - but it had very much the feel of a pre-season friendly. What it did show, beyond any doubt, is that neither Buur nor Vinagre are remotely good enough for where we're hoping to go. Wouldn't be surprised to see two WBs come in. And I'd love a player at RWB who can play a really penetrating forward pass.

I was more impressed by Vitinha than Silva, but I thought they both had tidy debuts

Nuno pressed on Jota absence and just says "not available" about four times, even when asked if Jota is injured.
Make of that what you will.

By the way, I'm not concerned. But it's funny how suddenly people don't "care" because it's a "shit competition" as soon as we've lost. The long and short of it is, with the side we put out, against a second string Stoke City side, we should have taken them to the cleaners.

I actually thought Fabio looked quite average this evening - very raw. But it's his first appearance and he still has a lot to learn so time and patience is required there. Vitinho was positive - looked to get the ball forward and has a nice touch. The rest of them were all pretty poor - particularly Vinagre again. How many opportunities does he want?

It's all very well getting minutes in to the players legs, but that's one competition you can cross off the list now. So a few of these lads won't be playing again until the first FA cup match. If they're happy with that, fair enough. Like I say, I'm not "concerned" - we'll go and give City a good game next week - but get above 1st gear this evening and we win that match. One shot on target wasn't it? Jesus. I'm not sure Nuno will even try and defend that.

Like DW i genuinely couldn't give a fuck about the Carabao cup, just like last year when we played a very weak team against Villa and i was happy just to see some of the other lads. I paid to go to Villa Park that night to see some of those lads play (Sanderson, Campbell etc) and paid to watch tonight purely to watch Fabio and Vitinha. I understand people want us to win a cup but look at what we did in that game and understand what we used it for and that was minutes.

Not having that he looked average, movement is excellent, touch is top quality but had no one to link with first half. Snatched at his chances and tired towards the end but very promising. Vitinha decent too, tidy but would have liked to have seen him carry the ball more and get closer to Fabio but that will come.

Nuno won't defend it and he won't come out and say we don't really care but he won't care that much, you have to pick and choose what games you really prioritise this season and games in this competition aren't them although as i said they definitely would have liked to have won. I know some fans really want a cup win but for me couldn't care less about this one and would rather finish 5th, understand that to some that won't make sense.

Wouldn't say Buur was poor. He is limited (in as much as he's never going to beat a man, and can't play the same kind of role that Doc did) but he's a decent enough footballer - he rarely gives it away, doesn't get beaten very often, is always on for a pass - and within that constraint he was fine. Obviously he isn't what we need in that position but I don't think anyone at the club is kidding themselves that he is.

Vinagre was poor as he got into good positions more than once and wasted all of them.

My main takeaway was that we desperately need a rwb. That and Traore up front in a 2 doesn’t work.

The Jota thing is concerning, wonder what’s happened?

Buur looks a competent L1 / maybe championship RB. He's not an RWB though and definitely not for a top half PL team

I'd say he'd be fine doing the same job in the Champ as Coady did for us at RB. Maybe a bit better as he can cross to a point and doesn't mind going over the halfway line.

I would imagine everyone at the club also knows this.

Yeah, vinagre hasn't done himself any favours again tonight. Neves was doing that really fucking annoying thing of joining the back three to get the ball - he needed to be higher up the pitch against these. Traore was shite, dendonker full of industry but little impact, and Ruddy is done.

Gutted for fabio, some of his movement is terrific but he really should have scored, and now he's lost his best chance for starts this side of Christmas.

I just don’t really see the point in playing him, but I suppose we have no choice with Matheson injured. I’d actually rather play Sanderson, and I really don’t think he’s an RWB.

Oh and my guess is that jota was asked to go on the bench and has refused

Make of that what you will.

I seem to remember him saying quite a similar thing about Doherty (which later turned out to be that procedure on his lip) So who knows really.
