Wolves 3 v PNE 2 - a mental game verdict thread

Frank, should they really put a Villa fan as the ref considering what happen only a week earlier?
Has it ever been clarified where in Staffordshire the ref is from? Your neck of the woods??

That Preston forum is funny. 'Please give us respect, we want respect, give it nowwwwwwwwwwwwwww' Oh and we spake funny :)

I can't believe they think the ref was biased for us.

Best (or worst) quote I can find:

There seems to be an infection of this foreign cheating and diving now in the championship.

Lord have mercy.

The usual crap that fans from off our patch dish out when they’ve lost. It’s not like we haven’t heard it before.
Looking at the 3rd goal can’t really see how they can complain there’s a hell of a lot Preston could have done to prevent that goal long after anyone was impeded plus the clearance passed over halfway could understand if it only went 25 yards.

As for the ref failure to stamp some authority early on led to the fracas late on, plus in those conditions just glad no one got injured on both sides.
Fair to say the ref was crap for both sides yesterday hopefully we don’t see him for a while, having said that I thought the ref we had against Cardiff was far worse.

He's from Penkridge. Went to school with my brother in law.

So basically, he's not just from the same (real) county as the club; but also within the club's supporter catchment area and the commuter belt of the city? If he was from, say, Burton then fair enough, but Penkridge?

How on earth are the League even vaguely considering allowing him to referee our games, regardless of whether he is a fan of a "rival" club? That's just unfair all round - unfair to us, and unfair to our opponents.

Probably be the last time we see him anyway especially if Villa stay in the top 6. Pretty sure as the season progresses you can’t have refs who are fans of clubs you’re challenging with.
But surely theres s ref from somewhere far enough away from both Preston and Wolverhampton who could have done yesterday’s game.

A referee should not be appointed to referee a team within his own county. And Wolves come under the jurisdiction of Birmingham County F.A., whereas the referee is affiliated to Staffordshire County F.A. So in that sense there was nothing wrong with the appointment.

Having said that, other factors should come into consideration, one being the fact that he supports Aston Villa. As Villa are in the top six, and may well be in a promotion battle with Wolves, then I would suggest he should not have officiated at Molineux. Also, having refereed Wolves very recently, I find it strange he was given one of our games so soon after.

So in conclusion, no I do not think he should have been appointed to a game involving two of Villas possible promotion rivals.

The feeling I'm getting is that Preston were quite physical and a lot of pre-match "them foreigners won't like a few kicks" , we gave a bit back to them and now they're getting upset.

I saw this on their forum :-

Am i biased or something. Practically every team we play opposition fans call us dirty? I think we play great football yet we apparently bullys.

It's not me that's wrong, it's everybody else.

It sounds the same as Cardiff, they were better when they were trying to play football

I thought Preston looked a good team, pretty physical but Saiss especially gave it back to them. If the referee had stamped down on the fouls on Jota fr the start then the game would have been a lot fairer.

A strange game this one.

Until we scored we didn't impress at all on a blustery day where both teams seemed to be putting the ball out for tame throw ins. We looked a bit disjointed compared to our performance against Villa and an impressive Preston side didn't let us settle on the ball. The goal came just before half time which is always a good time to score.

We came out in the second half and looked much better, launching some decent attacks which culminated in winning the penalty. Leo stepped up to take the penalty and did one of those hesitant, stuttering runs up. I thought he was going to mess it up. Thankfully he scored. He then scored again 4 minutes later and the stadium seemed to be shaking to its foundations with people chanting and enjoying us thrashing a good side. At that point I was expecting us to go on to win by 4 or 5! Unfortunately just a couple of minutes later, Lambert's target Hugill rose up and headed in impressively to score what seemed like a consolation goal. I was disappointed we had lost the clean sheet. When Coady scored an own goal 11 minutes later this led to a very nerve wracking last 14 minutes plus 6 minutes of injury time.

The ref lost control of the game and was as poor as we were expecting him to be before the game. Neves and Bonatini impressed again. I felt Nuno's subsitutions of Leo and Cav with Bright and Costa were wrong ones, especially when they pulled a couple back. Bright was frustrating again, holding onto the ball for too long and making wrong decisions. He clearly has talent but he needs to sort this side of his game out quick.

We won but it almost felt like a defeat at the end! Being positive though, the lads held their nerve on a blustery day against a good side and a shit ref and showed that they could also win 'ugly' showing mental resilience.

Another 3 points, still top of the table, happy days!

And probably should have a couple more yellows at least from yesterday alone. I've no problem with a physical approach, within the laws of the game, but they got away with a lot early on which allowed things to build up to that melee on 90 minutes. How they've the nerve to complain that the ref was against them is beyond me. The guy just wasn't up to the job.

I thought we were going to have a home game where I didn’t need to shit myself for 10 minutes! Never mind we got it done.

First half we were woeful. Whether that was down the Preston stopping us playing, the weather stopping our long passes being accurate, a bad day or a combination I’m not sure.

We were certainly hesitant to spread it wide like Normal allowing Preston to get in our faces in tight areas meaning we really couldn’t get it going. Somehow we manged to go in at half time with a goal which helped.

Second half we were good and put the game to bed until we gifted them a way back in. Douglas was horrific, similar to his performance against Sheff Utd where he couldn’t pass water or defend, Miranda wasn’t much better, really struggling with the aerial ball. Thought Batth was good (apart from completely switching off allowing Hugill in)as were Neves and Saiss.

Nunos changes were poor, no idea why Bright came on. I’m not a fan of his and today just reaffirms my view. He just doesn’t have it in his head, not even close and he’s not going to just “learn” that. Plus the lazy twat wasn’t even trying to run back when we were under the cosh and he’d only just come
on with the player 5 meters away from him! Costa wasn’t much better and looks way off it.

As for the ref, what a joke. Preston weren’t dirty, he just didn’t punish any cynical fouls so they were allowed to constantly do it breaking up play without risk of a card. He was terrible for both teams.

Take the 3 points and I’ll look forward to seeing us give City a game.

Nice to see Saiss making sure fire was fought with fire.
As for the game itself on that performance PNE will go down the league table as the suspensions pile up. They have some decent players and IMO would be
far better served with a manager who set out to play football, that was just too physical to win you anything on another day they would have had 3 bookings in the first ten minutes. If they got promoted with thuggery like that it would be interesting to see how they got on with the premiership refs.
They claim our goals were lucky I agree Leos second was but if it hadn't bounced straight in the net there is a fair chance he would have got a boot on it. Isn't it a little fortunate for them to get an own goal off CC foot.
We didn't deal with them well first half but I think the goal gave us a bit of belief. We are lucky to come out of that with no injuries. Atmosphere was a bit flat after the Villa game helped by the way they tried to kill the game.
Batth responsible for their first but did well otherwise. Douglas was below par Doc was good but final ball pants.
Brights cameo was a masterclass in distribution and great attitude racing back to get onside NOT.

I'm afraid that attitude is rife in this country especially outside the Premiership...'foreigners don't like it up em'. Of course its all rubbish and then teams will get all precious when we dish back at em, tbh think Preston would be better served by trying to play football rather than the strongarm stuff, they have some decent players. Pleased we seemed to have learned from the Cardiff game and are better able to cope with it
