Wolves 3 v PNE 2 - a mental game verdict thread

Are people starting to think that Vinagre is better than Douglas?

It was close even before today, but I'm firmly in the Vinagre camp after that "performance" from Barry.

Vinagre is long term the guy for that position and Douglas hasnt quite been at his best since coming back.I still think Douglas is the better option for this kind of game.

Vinagre signing permanently has to be done in January he has so much potential it's ridiculous.

Thought Batth did quite well today. Ref missed a few things

Thought Batth was the weak link today, spannered the ball away too many times and clearly at fault for the first goal. Need to get Boly back ASAP, plus we really need to not leave coady to challenge for high balls.

Doing fine on the goal scoring front (despite not signing the fabled min 20 a season man) - joint first on goals scored so far for Championship teams

I had been out this afternoon watching another aspiring referee. I got back in the car just as the radio announced that Wolves were three up. I thought this must be easy. How wrong I was, found it difficult to concentrate on driving for the last fifteen minutes...

It was worse at the ground Frank, my heart was going like crazy.

2 home games against teams placed 5th and 7th and 6 points.
Only 2nd defeat all season for Preston and they’d only conceded 8 goals before today.
Big test today against physical side and we’ve come through it.

If I had been involved in an accident I would blamed Wolverhampton Wanderers...

Seriously though, were there a lot of injuries given the amount of time added on?

Couldn't really understand where the 6 mins came from, there was only one injury I remember when, I think, Saiss took an elbow to the head. Neves might have been down too.

The 6 turned to 8 mins because of all the argy-bargy after their Red.

Phew. Great entertainment but we really should have managed the game better.

For the first time in his time at the club I think Nuno’s changes probably ceded control of the game back to Preston. Although I do have sympathy with wanting to protect some of the front three.

Costa looks off it still and I thought Bright, one run aside, looked second to everything. We could not get the ball to stick with them two. That coincided with Saiss’s touch deserting him.

At the back, Douglas was iffy again for me. Miranda still looks like he has a howler in him. Batth was the pick of the defenders.

Credit to Preston. As Cardiff proved, that is exactly how to play against us. High pressing, harrying, niggly and physical where necessary. They took at a step further by man marking Jota - and fair play it worked. I really enjoyed that contest.

Still, a big test passed and we’ll come out of it stronger and wiser.

Edit: I should add, I thought Neves had one of his best games for us. Quieter when chaos was descending around him in the last five minutes, but otherwise sumptuous. Some of his passing was out of this world. All of our chances and goals came from excellent passing from him.

When do we get concerned about Costa?

Yeah, somethings clearly not right with him just yet...(pace and tackling of any sorts)
But if we dont play him the U23's how is he to get back to some sort of match fitness?
Perhaps he has a mental issue he needs to work around in thinking he might get injured again.

Thought we dug in and gave a good account of ourselves in a different way than the footballing masterclass last weekend.

We can't play that way every week for 46 games and we're proving we can nick games at the death, win ugly, be patient, hold on.

Bodes well.

Neves MOTM all day long. First time he's come up against a physical side and still stamped his authority on running the midfield. Saiss was noticeably second best in there today.

Costa looked ok, I was in the BQ lower so he was right in front of me. It didn't exactly come off for him today, but he had a couple of good runs and probably should have scored. Didn't help that he got his foot stamped on at about 80 mins.

He was ok. Obviously needs to get his sharpness back as he's had a disrupted pre-season and still almost no football as of yet.

Frank...

For the sending off the player walked off knowing he was going... the ref was then distracted by a bit f handbags from the two squads.

Before restarting play he ordered their player return from the drressing room and he was then shown his second yellow and red... was this correct or somewhat pedantic?

Well if there's one game that proves that we aren't going to be pushovers it's this one. Our quality shone to put us 3 up and then we went to sleep and let them get back into it which we really shouldn't have done. Douglas had a shocking game to be honest, giving the ball away constantly, caught out by balls in behind and not stopping crosses. Both goals came from that side although how Batth managed to lose Hugill i'm not sure. We had to dig deep in the last 10 minutes and boy did they dig deep.

Miranda despite a couple of moments where he was sloppy on the ball was easily the best of the back 3, defended fantastically when Hugill went up against him so he went the other side. Bonatini is class, 7 goals already and our striker that doesn't score is on for 20 a season.

Ref was very very poor. Let them get away with tackles, pull backs, and little niggly fouls either by letting them go unpunished or not showing a yellow card early enough. The pull back on Jota round his throat was the worst of the lot in the first half. Browne should have been sent off early in the second half imo for his lunge on Neves after the ref had already given them a free kick. Ref then proved he didn't know the rules by making Neves leave the pitch even though he had booked Browne for the lunge.

Costa clearly is a bit hesitant at the moment and we need to ease him in gradually, Tuesday might be perfect because i can't see City trying to go through him.

That happened last week too, where the ref made our player go off after booking a Villa player.

I thought Coady was our best defender today. Unlucky with the OG but he was the one heading everything away at the end. Made a good saving header in the first half too.

Hugill was a fucking disgrace. Elbows everywhere shitehouse. Thank fuck we sacked Lambert or he would be wearing our colours. 3 nil up and it should have been about 8. Two lapses of concentration made it nervous. But we nailed another three valuable points.
