Wolves 2-2 Everton: Verdict Thread

Either way he won't be playing in the next few games now they have Zouma and Mina!

Funny because about five minutes before the red card my brother pointed out just how tired Jagielka looked only 35/40 mins in. It was quite embarrassing how fucked he looked.

I do worry about Costa at the absolute top level and I think Traore has been bought in to ultimately replace him. I don’t have those same worries for Jota - he will be fine.

For me, Traore’s direct running and pace would have helped us enormously yesterday when Everton went down to 10 and there was less space to play through.

As I said yesterday, Nuno & the boys will have learnt a huge amount yesterday and I don’t think we have anything to worry about. I’m expecting a much better performance v Leicester.

We didn't create too many chances from open play tbf.

The goal obviously, Raúlito's 1v1, his volley from Doherty's cross and a low cross from Jota that Pickford stopped. Can't remember any more than that?

Costa had a pop from outside the box in the first half that Pickford saved confortably, plus Neves spammed one over in the second half.

Agree on Traore. Their defence isn’t exactly blessed with speed and he would have given them something different to think about. Think yesterday was a bit of a unique situation as both Costa and Jota both had off days on the same day both Cav and Traore weren’t fit, I don’t suspect that will happen again many times.

Moutinho also put one over when he should have tested the goalkeeper. Neves’ long range shots are not chance, we work the ball into a position where he can attempt them.

Given that we know a few players can perform better and we have options to come in I thought it was a competent if not exhilarating performance. We didn’t look out of place.

Absolutely agree. Which is why the “we’ll struggle to create chances” comments earlier in this thread are a bit weird.

We struggled to create chances when Everton were down to 10. I didn't really expect that would be controversial. I'm not saying we will continue to be poor in that vein, but we absolutely must improve.

I really hate it when any team's fans sing it so was disappointed (but not surprised) yesterday when I heard it.

I don't think the alarm bells should be ringing at all but the poorer aspects of our game being present ln the first day gives Nuno more to work with. It didn't help that Cav was out he would have been the ideal sub to give us a bit more movement in the final third..

Only Jimenez really Impressed me out of the starting front 3, Jota huffed and puffed but other than drawing the foul didn't do that much and Costa did virtually nothing. I am positive Jota will improve but I'm not so sure about Costa.

Our build up and tempo was far too ponderous especially when Everton went down to 10 but again this should be easily addressed by Nuno.

Overall I'm happy but I think there is a lot of work to do if we have aspirations of being in the top half.

We also have Cav Dondy and Traore to call upon for Leicester, which is a boost.

Wouldn't be so sure about Cav. Nuno's comments on him seem to suggest he has one of those injuries that they are just no sure about. Comments on managing his time due to the back injury over preseason and training

Shit and embarrasing chant and West Ham fans have already sang it at Anfield this afternoon

So where do you draw the line, as mentioned in the above post does it bother you that West Ham fans are not forever blowing bubbles ??

Surprised at the negativity. Everton had good spells (as they will) and one of them led to the second goal - but overall we looked far from out of place and fully merited a point. Meanwhile Cardiff and Fulham were getting whipped by bottom half fodder.

We defended both goals poorly and we just need to be aware at this level that you can't be half a yard off the pace, you'll get punished. Yet we've still gone out there and played our football, scored two damn good goals, all the subs played well which shows we do have options (Leo looked a lot sharper than he has for a while) and we weren't even at full strength, there's three players who'll make the 18 every single week if available who weren't there. We look like we've got a proper number 9 and we showed serious character to come back twice.

There are concerns - Costa didn't play very well at all and we know full well that Doherty can't cross (he's actually getting worse in that respect) or defend, we should have shown more intent when we came out after half time (I'd bet that Nuno would have put Traore straight on if he'd been on the bench) and we're a team that's built on a fundamentally sound base, I don't expect us to give away two soft goals in a game. Overall though I thought we were decent with plenty more to come.

I agree with this.

I can't understand the negative comments as a way we are going to play in the future. This was the first game of the season at a team which is expected to do well with a manager who is highly rated. This isn't Bolton or Burton anymore.

It'll be a good learning experience for Nuno as much as the players. Geuye was outstanding for Everton in midfield and gave Moutinho and Neves no time at all (Schneiderlien was abysmal) and it took time for both of them to adjust. The same with Jota who only started to play well when Vinagre came on the pitch. Boly looked suspect for the first hour but after that something clicked in his head and he played like a man possessed, winning everything and playing through balls and moving up with the ball and past players.

Bennett had a solid game but his one mistake was in part culpable for the goal and at this level you get found out even on the smallest of errors. Coady was poor throughout for me, nervous, poor on the ball, backed off RoJo style when run at and generally nowhere near as effective as he was last season, but then it was his first game.

Doherty was Doherty, nobody thinks he's good enough for this level and yesterday told us that hasn't changed. I hope for our sake he does improve and if he doesn't then I can see Vinagre on the left and Jonny on the right after the International break.

I was impressed with Everton and their tactics, they knew Baines wasn't going to cope with Costa on his own so they shifted Keane across and had a 2v1 every time Costa received the ball. They were happy if he went back to Doherty as Everton knew Doc wasn't going to hurt them. Nuno didn't have an answer to this as we don't have an answer to the replacement Doc question yet and Traore and Cav are out.

Overall I thought we were getting to the pace of the league and it will take a little time but I enjoyed the game and think we created some quality chances as well as some defensive fuck ups.

That's not what you said. You said:

2. Almost nothing Jota or Costa did all day came off. We must see improvement in those positions or we will continue to struggle scoring.

Then changed it to:

"Struggle breaking teams down" probably would have been a better choice of words.

Barely walking it back, am I?

We weren't as good going forward as we will need to be this season. Simple as.

Barely walking it back, am I?

We didn’t struggle to break Everton down. We scored twice and should have had a third.

When have we struggled to break teams down? If last season doesn’t count then it doesn’t make any sense at all.
