Wolves 2-2 Everton: Verdict Thread

Tbf I haven't had any issue with anything you've directed at me, Booz. I think we were in "violent agreement" (I think that's the right phrase).

Just the usual debate stuff, nothing to get our knickers in a twist over.

Maybe I should try a positive opinion... How fucking good are Moutinho and Neves? I mean, wow.

What? So, something is lost in translation here. Alan said based on yesterdays performance we will need to improve going forwards, I believe. Now, he didn't say how it was going to affect our season just that against 11 men we are probably going to have to be more industrious going forward which is a legitimate observation. Not because we are going to struggle but because this is the Premier League and it is a different beast. Now, I would have to agree with him and would say should we attack like we did yesterday we might struggle more than if we didn't improve and break teams down more effectively and at quicker pace when the opportunity arises. That didn't happen yesterday as Jota and Costa were ineffective.

So, nobody has really used it as a barometer by saying "we'll get relegated" or "we'll finish in this position", just that it needs to be improved upon and I would say Alan was right with that conclusion.

Moutinho will get better as he finds his feet. Neves will surpass him on every level though and for the first time yesterday I had a horrible feeling that this might just be his last season with us. He's on a different level and will be one of the best midfielders in the world in two or three years time.

I'm not having a go at you particularly Booz, but people are constantly arguing the semantics of every thing he posts lately purely because they take his opinion as rubbish.

I like to think I've earned my reputation. :icon_wink:

Just to add, I don't think we played too poorly yesterday it was just obvious how rusty we were. That being said, I'm sure Everton were rusty too. Nerves also played a big part and I'm sure we'll improve. I'm not wholly confident with Coady in defence at this level but it is too early to tell. He could end up being the next Danny Blind!

Arlo White on the American comms yesterday said about Neves "he isn't in the Portuguese squad now, but on this evidence he will be tomorrow" (paraphrasing).

Moutinho may not have quite the same flash as Ruben but I was infinitely impressed by just how deftly he dribbles out of trouble, much in the same way Neves can. They both always seem to know exactly which outlet pass is on, and when one isn't, no problem, they'll just nutmeg the defender. What a pair to have.

Me too, I'm already resigned to Neves going in the summer.

We'd have to have a fucking good season for him to stick around

I have no idea who Arlo White is but I always like hearing of an Arlo (it's my son's name) :)

I think Ruben's as committed to the cause as anybody and he looks like he genuinely loves it here. He certainly appreciates the fans, and the club for giving him a platform to improve and be a central figure in what we're trying to achieve. I don't for one minute think he'd jump ship at the first chance but somebody big will come calling for him sooner or later and I reckon that club will be abroad, he'll only leave when the lure is too big.

He's the main commentator for NBC's coverage here in the US. Robbie Earle is the other voice you'll hear in this video.

Hopefully you have access to the video at all (could be region locked) as I think Arlo does a great job.

Doesn't work on mine, shame!

He was on Five Live years ago. He was alright I suppose.

Americans really, really, really rate Ian Darke to a frightening degree so I wouldn't take their assessment of commentators especially seriously ;)

Won't work unless you've got a VPN, I guess...well, unless you're in North America.

Ian Darke has a big head, small chin and for those reasons shouldn't be trusted.

Darke was practically sainted here after he called the US v. Algeria match in the 2010 World Cup.

Late to the party here but that was a pretty good opening game against a side with plenty of good players and a good coach who should be chasing a top 6/7 spot. The game was quite even i thought and a draw was about right. In terms of how both teams played i think us and Everton were pretty poor on the ball but very good off it for most of the game. Both teams dropped and pressed very well which lead to errors from the team on the ball and this lead to goals. Everton played magnificently with 10 men and it's not always easy to beat a side with 10 if they defend well and are compact which they did, we didn't move the ball quick enough to hurt them enough but that will come.

As i said on the ball we didn't play particularly well and yes Everton had 10 men for over half the game but we managed to not lose the game despite players like Boly, Costa and Jota not playing anywhere close to their best. We were naive on the ball, taking far too any touches and then for some reason in the second half taking far too many risks in strange areas and not concentrating in defensive areas when we had the ball. Everton didn't particularly create anything apart from the second goal maybe but even then it was littered with errors from our defenders but then we didn't create a lot either apart from the Jimenez chance at 1-1.

As i thought before a ball was kicked we will be more than fine as we looked just as good if not better than Everton 11v11 up until the goal which again doesn't go in very often as they were lucky it landed right in front of Richarlison to prod home. We do have to realise that we are now playing against players that are quicker mentally than they are in the Championship and once we do that and we have all our options available we will be fine. I thought Bonatini, Vinagre and MGW all showed they can offer something this season if needed and we have player like Cav and Adama to come with Jota and Costa sure to improve. Once we do get used to the pace of the league teams aren't going to like playing against us imo.

If you struggle to break teams down you will struggle to score. Doesn't require Holmesian powers of deduction, does it?

Personally I would use the terms "breaking teams down" and "creating more chances" interchangeably.

Nope, still talking shite. Plenty of teams play for set plays to score goals, doesn't require any breaking of any teams down. That's besides the point of you criticising a team that scored two goals for not scoring enough goals.

And you're right, you've earned your rep.

As have you.

Sorry jonny that's bollocks mate. All he's said - and it's correct both statistically and anecdotally - was that we didn't create many clear cut chances. That's unarguably true. Raul took his goal well, that was by no means a gimme. He had a one on one which was a good chance, and a volley from a cross that was a half chance. Other than that we didn't look like scoring, in a game where we had more of the ball than we did on average last season, when we pretty much created at will.

All people are saying is a that given yesterday, we need to be sharper and more inventive on the ball. That's not the pantwetting slating it's been made out to be!
