Things that make you SAD thread.

The right not to incriminate yourself.

The simple fact is no presidential candidate that pushes gun control will ever get elected. The gun lobby is too powerful.

Maybe the gun lobby should take a long, hard look at themselves after todays atrocity.

It sounds a bit paranoid but I'm guessing gun manufacturing has a whole industry around. With that sponsorship and donations to politicians will mean that nothing will ever change. Capitalism uber alles.

The gun manufacturing industry also thrives of panic and fear and the warped idea that you need a gun to protect yourself. I would not be surprised if gun sales went up for a few days.

You just have to see what difference a gun makes. There were two incidents recently, one a knife attack where two people were, I think, killed and a gun attack with scores killed and wounded. Taking guns out of civilian ownership wouldn't stop these things from happening but it would make it a damn sight harder

Absolutely.

But I don't think they will. As far as they are concerned, these "lone wolf" incidents (every two weeks or so) are just isolated nutters and bear no resemblance to those "good, righteous people" who want a collection of Kalashnikovs.

I know it probably wont happen in my lifetime, but what would be the consequences if either or both main political parties stood on a manifesto to control the gun law?

Guns don't kill people, people do as always will be the defence ...as GLC once sort of parodied

The Republican party would cease to exist and there would be a number of violent or semi-violent uprisings similar to the situation in the Pacific Northwest last year.

people in USA are afriad , so they get guns themselves to defend from others with guns... :)

Yet strangely there's never any sign of those gun toting heroes on hand to defend everyone when these incidents happen.
Strange that.

Afraid of?
That's a sweeping statement tbh Fred!:/

I agree with Fred, I think Americans are afraid. The media forces how much in danger they are and that they need security. I think Trump was voted for because they're afraid

You need to distinguish between the the UK and American systems. Parties don't stand on platforms Presidential candidates do.

Trump was voted for because white Americans are afraid.

But Fred is right. Americans think that they aren't safe unless they can deter a threat, and the number one deterrent (according to most here) is death.

It's white American fear in the main though isn't it? That's how I see it. They fear any threat to their 'Christian' conservative Utopia. Threats from anybody that could dispute their ideology.

Usually one of the arguments used is that if 'good guys' are armed then they can defend themselves - though if someone is using automatic weapons out of a 32nd floor hotel window some way away you having a handgun to defend yourself isn't going to help

As Bill Maher says, Trump couldn't happen without a Black President preceding him.

Spot on.

Al, are there ever any serious demonstrations or protests against the NRA, or for tighter gun control?

There are demonstrations, sure. But they aren't really taken seriously. Not by anyone in power, at least. Guns are as American as baseball and apple pie, to use the old cliché.

Anyone with the power to change things in regards to guns would pretty much instantly lose that power by promoting gun control.
