The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

The "change your password" screen had a html exploit that allowed anyone woth your name and address to change your password on your account so they had to bring it down again sharpish.

More top notch work from Sony.

Wow. I'd read they had problems with the HTML thing but didn't read any further. I'd already reset my password by then so didn't think it'd matter to me. If that's why they took it down then I'm becoming more and more scared of connecting the console to the internet. Offline for almost a month to sort out security problems then they go and make an error like that. I think I'll take my 2 free games then run back to my xbox and PC for online gaming.

I'm thinking of getting wipeout and inFamous. What everyone else going with? (choices for those not sure are Little big planet, Dead Nation, inFamous, Wipeout HD and Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty)

How do you get your freebies anyway? I will probably get Wipeout and LBP.

I believe you get to choose once they put the store back up. Think I read they will be available for 30 days and can be kept forever once downloaded. So just waiting on the store really. Not 100% though.

Now counting down the hours until I can play LA Noire.

Going out to buy it at lunch...wish I could just take the rest of the day off to play it! Luckily I have all of tonight and tomorrow to get my fix!

Just purchased my copy and got a free copy of LA Confidential on Bluray...thank you HMV

Picked it up this morning. Played about an hour or so before having to work. So far, I'm liking it. A lot. It has a fairly sedate pace and the opening 'case' is really just a tutorial, but the facial animation is stunning and you can pretty much tell what a character is thinking when you're interviewing them from their facial expressions. Very impressive. The atmosphere and music are very authentic too. Can't wait to get back from my run to get stuck into it for the evening!

Will probably wait until it's a bit cheaper before picking up LA Noire but it's seemingly scoring high reviews all across the board. Shame it's not coming to PC though. Will look forward to what you guys think of it after some more play time.

Looks like Wipeout is a popular choice for the free game too. Not seen many people not choosing it other than those who already own it. LBP was a fun game for the time I spent on it and as you like the lego games Langdale I think you might well enjoy LBP especially as it's free.

My more detailed thoughts on LA Noire:

In terms of presentation and visuals this game is probably the best thing I've ever played. The voice acting in it is on a par with the standard you'd get in a decent TV show, in terms of games it blows all the competition out of the water. There is no repetition of dialogue that I've come across and I'm on my 8th case. The facial animation, as I said before, is truly astounding- you really do get good visual clues in your interrogations from watching the characters expressions and body language. The story is developed well and the progression of depth and difficulty in the different cases is good. There seems like quite a lot of 'extra' stuff to do outside the story cases, as you'd expect from Rockstar. So you've 40 'street cases', called into you by dispatch as you're driving your car (more of which in a minute), you have 30 (I think, it may be more) LA landmarks to finds as you're driving around, 100 cars to find and drive and 13 newspapers which give details of the story that overarches all of the different cases. So there's plenty to do, and most of it is bloody great!

The investigation work is great, searching for clues at the crime scene, following up leads, interviewing 'persons of interest' etc. This leads to my first minor moan- so far, and I realise that I'm only a few cases in to the game, each investigation has followed a similar pattern, though they branch out in different ways. It's nowhere near as repetitive as Assassin's Creed (the first one), but a little more variety in how you start your investigation would have been good (though I guess the way it is lends authenticity!) Searching around for every single clue can be time consuming but the fact that the music stops playing when you've found them all helps prevent unnecessary time wasting!

So it's great? Well, yes, but as well as the repetition issue, my biiggest complaint is the driving. You are told that you have to drive carefully and avoid collisions etc in order to get the highest rating you can for each case. The problem I find is that the CPU drivers are friggin morons! I'm driving carefully, following the rules of the road, stopping at red lights etc, but when the lights turn green and I move I expect the car in front to move as well! Instead some idiot driver (and pedestrians apparently aren't immune to terminal stupidity either!) sits there and lets me run into the back of them! Then I try to drive straight across at a junction (when the lights are on green mind!) and some imbecile coming from the opposite direction decides to turn right across in front of me! Now I know American drivers are pretty bad, but bloody hell, it's annoying!

That aside, I'd say it's a great game and a thoroughly immersive experience and one I'd recommend to anyone who likes their gaming a little more thought provoking and taxing on the old grey matter, rather than just running around shooting shit...

Good post Toon - very informative. I'm going to have to buy it at some point - it sounds ace.

I like it, it's completely different to anything I've ever played before so it's taking a bit of time to adjust to. Agree with all your points Toon, although I'm still taking the GTA approach to driving.

I watched a mate play it for a bit today and the facial stuff is very impressive.

One thing I forgot to comment on is the music in the game. For me, a soundtrack can contribute an awful lot to the game experience, and certainly the music in Fallout 3 was one of the things that made me love the game. Well, LA Noire has the best soundtrack I've ever heard, truly brilliant. It includes Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Loius Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Dinah Washington and more. It really does contribute to giving the game a tremendous atmosphere.

Toon, in my entire console owning life I've only ever bought FIFA, Pro Evo, and a token COD game. You may have convinced me!

Thanks for the review Toon. Maybe there will be a patch to improve the driving.

How to you rate it compared to Red Dead Redemption and Fallout New Vegas?

Del Woppio - you need to expand your gaming horizons! The two games mentioned above should be a good start!

HW, it is different to both Red Dead and the Fallout games, because it isn't really an open world game. It's more linear as you have to follow the story missions really. It doesn't rely on conversations with characters in the same way- the people you talk to are the ones the game directs you towards as part of your investigation. There isn't the same level of gunplay either- you can't just randomly pull out your weapon and shoot people, you only draw your gun in situations the game allows. You are meant to be a good cop in a city of corrupt cops, so the game makes you stick to this fairly rigidly, even in terms of the driving. It really is a much more cerebral game than anything I've ever played on a console- making use of investigative skills is more important than how accurately you can shoot. Can you read body language and can you extrapolate from clues to trap people in their lies? Those are the most important gameplay elements. It's fantastic.

Thanks for your thoughts on the game Toon. Does sound a great purchase. Was curious as to whether or not it was more free roam open city or linear, although had feeling it was linear. The AI driving sounds very annoying though and from what you say, reminds me a little of the original Driver, which did my nut in. Although it sounds very good game I think I'll wait a couple weeks yet before picking it up, hopefully get it slightly cheaper. More in the mood for some mindless shooting at moment rather than a decent thinkers type game at moment.
