Summer 2021 transfer window

I haven’t argued against Semedo tbf in this. Just 3rd partied a debate questioning the argument.
Its more that every single thread at the moment seems to result in an interminable debate about Traore or Doc/Semedo

The Doc to Wolves story is undoubtedly a load of rubbish. Lazy journalism at it's finest - but what's to say we couldn't have both Nelson AND Doc on our books at the same time? Why does it have to be one or the other?

If we were offered him back at a cut-price deal and he was open to it, I'd be happy with them both. Competition for places and options. It would mean Hoever can concentrate on developing his game at RCB too.

But as I say, it's very likely a load of bollocks anyway.

But again, you haven’t considered the style of McGinn himself, what Villa ask him to do, who he comes up against doing it. “Running around like a headless chicken” I think he has been described as on here before. And whilst he is running around he is often running past people like Neves and Moutinho.

He is succeeding at 1.62 dribbles per 90. Which could be 1.62 line breaking runs against a static JWP, or Moutinho hanging out a leg.

I’m sure if you broke down his stats into dribbles against a FB near the corner flag his attempts would Be very low and his success rate very low.

Like I said, No context to the stats you provided implying McGinn beating Semedo in the corner flag is an expected outcome more often than not.

Heatmap showing majority (just) of McGinns touches are in the opponent's half

One of his strengths is dribbling, this is based on a statistical analysis.

He could well be doing most of his dribbles in his own half, but that doesn't mean he suddenly loses that skill when he crosses half way. Of course it should be more difficult for him the nearer to the opposing box he gets, but to say that McGinn doesn't have the ability to beat a player when dribbling is demonstrably not true.

If it had been say Douglas Luiz who'd dribbled round Semedo I'd be fuming.

Dribbling past Rodri is not the same as dribbling past Kyle Walker.

Dribbling past someone on the touch line and byline is not the same as dribbling past someone in the middle of the pitch (in any third).

I’m not saying he’s shit at dribbling. I’m not saying Semedo is shit at defending Against dribbles. I’m saying quoting stats like you did originally does not mean McGinn beating Semedo near the corner flag is an expected result.

My eyes can tell me it was poor play. Particularly as it wasn’t a “dribble” he’s just faked a cross and Semedo has sold himself and recovered badly.

It was shit defending. I don't think in general Semedo is shit at defending dribbles though. I think his technique can be a bit risky sometimes bt he actually wins a good amount of his 1v1s.

In your opinion, what do you feel Nelson excels at? He came here with a bit of a rep for being done 1 v 1 and losing the ball high up the pitch, but I personally thought that could be more to do with elite club fan expectations and Barca leaving him exposed, yet we've seen both of those elements since he's been here.

I think he has settled in a little, and has ability, but it concerns me that he hasn't really demonstrated any end product going forward and yet looks pretty average as a defender too... all a bit middling really.

I was responding to the poster who said he "got skinned by John McGinn FFS" like that event is on a par with seeing unicorns.

Semedo could have done better and shouldn't have given away a pen. The stats, to me anyway, suggest it could happen and wouldn't be that unusual.

I think the 1v1 defending area he is really good at. Certainly better than I expected.

He is really good under pressure with the ball, his dribbling is excellent which I think will be a key part of the team growing into a better possession team. He'll allow us to stay on the ball for longer, even while being pressed, I think. He contributes to the build up of attacks better than people give credit for, rather than necessarily being the one who gets assists or the odd goal (as Doc did pretty effectively). Think people are getting too hung up on goals and assists with him anyway if I am honest.

He's obviously very quick, which is a bonus in many phases of the game. I'd like him to be braver attacking 1v1 though, think he doesn't take players on round the outside as much as he should (although usually because Neto and Adama want the ball wide and do it themselves).

Weaknesses wise - his aerial ability concerned me from the start but has improved somewhat in fairness and we are protecting his weakness better. Big issue at moment is his tendency to switch off costing us goals, been too many even recently, which by start of next season he needs to eradicate. With time and learning the set up better he can do that though by then.

We sold Doc for £14m and bought him for £27m. I struggle when people don't see him as a significant upgrade on Doherty, if I am honest. I think he is just a much higher calibre of footballer. People keep going on about us not being fun enough to watch but he will contribute to us being a better team to watch in the long run.

He's probably one of the ones I am most looking forward to watching live from a) an aesthetics point of view and b) to see whether he is better or worse in person!

Come on, you were saying we can't expect Nelson to be perfect because of the elite attackers at PL level: not even his own mother would put John McGinn in that category, whatever stats you pull out

It is very noticeable to me that Neves/Moutinho are constantly looking at Semedo for the outball when they're in possession.
Clearly within the club there is a lot of faith in his abilities.
I agree with your earlier comment that a lot of us may need to see him live (as in not on tv) to appreciate what he brings.
If he continues to offer more as he has this season, think he'll be a major asset next season.

City fans said the same about Cancelo.

Is this tedious Semedo/Doc argument gonna last another two weeks?

All because of some absolute nonsense Twitter link.

I don't think I did? I just said he does it quite a bit more than one would expect. It's one of the strengths in his game so it isn't hugely suprising when it happens. Using McGinn as an example of someone who shouldn't be able to dribble past someone is unfair.

No defender will be 100% perfect and they will get beaten. As I've said before Nelson gets dribbled against more than any other Wolves player, from a % perspective he wins the most too. The fact the he has the most encounters may affect perception as to how good he is defensively.

Chelsea seem good at producing centre backs they won’t use...

sounds ideal for a back 3 the way he steps in with the ball. 20 year old with only championship experience of course. If we want to play a back four he’s probably not type who’d top my list but he might be worth tracking at least

With regards to FFP, is there any chance some premier League clubs will be sailing pretty close to the wind and need to sell? Could there be some opportunities there?

FFP is essentially cancelled for now as everyone is going to lose money through no fault of their own.

Some clubs could have cashflow issues I suppose. We don't.

This and next years accounts rolled into one for FFP purposes. With our accounts you can see why that is being done, what should have been a modest profit turned into a loss due to delayed payments.

What we need to do is work out how Everton do it. They must lose a shit ton every year but all it does is seemingly increase their transfer/wage budget the following year
