Summer 2021 transfer window

Doherty played around Boly and Jota/Podence far more if I remember rightly.

Would you take Doherty back?
It would be Bennett, Traore and Costa who were alongside/ ahead of him more than anyone

I can only imagine how much criticism Doc would have got for spannering the ball in the air once (against Arsenal) which ultimately lead to a goal, but imagine if he did it again a few weeks later and it yet again lead to a goal!! Let alone his numerous other fuck ups that have directly lead to goals (Villa H, Southampton H) or his pitiful 2nd half performance the other night.

This forum would be more broken than it already is! ;)

Of course it doesn't really matter anymore, but moaning that Doc could only play in one position is a bit like moaning Rui and Raul can only play in one position.

Like all of us, i hope so much Semedo can have a good pre season and we see a really consistent, important player next season, but i'm concerned that in coming from Barcelona and now being dropped from Portugal, mentally he may just be too damaged to be the player we hoped when we pumped best part of 30million on him. He is going to have to have a lot of mental strength to try and get himself to the top when he has already been there once before.

It being time to move Doherty on to look for more defensive solidity and Semedo being underwhelming to expectation given the fee and pedigree can both be true. No real need to exagerate the merits of one and denegrate the other and vice versa to prove a point

Of course, but the psychology is really interesting, there are a fair few, certainly on this forum that were constantly picking fault in Doc's defensive abilities (which at times were justified) somehow don't seem so critical of such clear and obvious issues with Semedo's.

The same psychology where you see Semedo being given the defence of not having good players around him, or Nuno not yet tweaking the system to benefit him, when both excuses are dismissed when relating to a certain rarely-mentioned Spanish winger.

In fact, Nelson lost the ball when bombing forwards and left us exposed to the counter at least three times on Monday, and that has been barely mentioned

I’m just not seeing them in Semedo personally. I certainly didn’t see this second half woeful performance against Liverpool that you are referring to. That’s a mystery to me.
Robertson really upped his game second half and Semedo just couldn't cope with it, Semedo gave 3 fouls away in quick succession, was dispossessed needlessly on at least 2 occasions, which looked as though it effected his confidence which stopped him going forward.

Who takes off an un injured attacking wing back when we are chasing a goal? He was brought off because he was struggling and offering nothing.

I know you're not going to, but if you were to watch the first 15 minutes of that 2nd half again, i think you'd see what i am saying, he was genuinely awful.

He had a ropey 15 minutes as all players are prone to in games.

Adama had a ropey 89 minutes

I've just re-watched the bit you said and I admit it wasn't his best but your 'genuinely awful' is way OTT. Robertson skinned him once and he mis-controlled the ball once when it got stuck under his feet.

Name any player brought in this season who has played better and improved more esp. remembering the conditions they have had to overcome.

Semedo didnt play 70 games last year either, or did he?

Edit: didnt see it was just the brought in players

Name one who was expected to.
Proves my earlier point re exageration

2nd most tackles won behind Neves and best success rate Vs dribbles (I'm not counting RAN in this)

He gets dribbled against the most of any defender and wins more than half.

Absolutely none I'd have thought. Salary and more attractive options being the main reasons

The time to get him was when he scored against us in a pre season friendly. No chance by the end of that season or now considering the mega bucks he’ll be on and other Champions league clubs who’ll want him.

Also seems ridiculous to expect a defender to be perfect when going up against the caliber of attacking player that you expect in the Prem.

He may get roasted in 1-on-1 defending at times but more often than not he's at least in a position to stop things or at least slow them down. Doc had the same propensity for getting roasted but was actually in a position to be roasted far less often, in no small part because he could never be bothered to do anything more than briskly walk toward our own goal.
