Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

You're all gonna disagree but I think we've done spurs rather than them doing us

Not all, my friend.

I genuinely don't know what it is that they think they're getting.

Transfrmarkt is about as reliable as it gets. They have Boly at £10.8m and Jonny at £18.5m.

Boly was unwanted by his parent club a year after being signed for £5.8m and then sold for £10.8m. Nice profit on a player you didn’t want / didn’t rate and they were known to be in financial difficulty at the time (when are Porto not). Chuck in inflation in the last 3 seasons, the fact that British based players go for more, one of the best performers in his position in the last two seasons (statistically) in “the best league in the world”, wanted by his parent club. You can see how the two aren’t remotely comparable.

No I think he will be a massive flop, or certainly not much better anyway. But that’s not our problem, same as selling Coady to a team in a back 4 would be ridiculous, but if someone is stupid enough to want him then take them to the cleaners. Like we did with a permanently broken Costa.

I know what you're saying, but these are the only players we've ever signed that cost more than we've sold Doherty for:

Patricio
Neves
Jota
Jonny
Podence
Traore
Jimenez
Cutrone

They're not even on the same level (bar Cutrone) and given the current situation, transfer market inflation doesn't come into it.

I do look forward to this level of financial scrutiny being applied to every single incoming and outgoing deal we do though, only it seemed that for years no-one was that bothered about financials...
You will always get more discussion about the value of transfers out more than in as essentially you know a lot more about the player going than staying.
Costa, Cav, Douglas, Fletcher, Afobe and Jarvis were all discussed extensively, be that perceived to be good or bad. Not this extensively granted, but the size of the squad and the lack of a - at least known to us replacement, is always going to compound that. Suggesting we bought Boly, Neves and Jonny for a similar price, which you know as well as I do is what was being inferred doesn't make a good comparison, given Neves in particular would fetch £50m+ now after 2 seasons in the PL.

On the players coming in front you and I were both on the same side re being ripped off for Traore

Basically we've taken what we can get for Doc and ran.

He's an average defender who has performed well in terms of numbers in a very specific role. We know he's going to be replaced at some point, better to do it when someone is willing to pay for him. I don't recall anyone else trying to muscle in on the deal, so we bit the bullet and sold him.

Completely get that. But If not replaced by better then there are questions to ask

But as I say - not everyone in the entire world can always have the replacement in first, logically it doesn't make any sense? Someone has to budge first. Presumably with the confidence that they will bring in who they want (and equally presumably, they believe this new guy will be better).

yes, of course thats the case

Are we going to get an upgrade on Doc for 15m?

If the answer is yes and we get that person in then it’s good business

If the answer is no and we don’t replace we have fucked up

That’s the two options for me

Why does any replacement only need to cost £15m?

We tried to buy Cancelo for £40m and I'm sure if we find the right player available we'll spend whatever they cost.

Two players out of the first team picture vs first (only) choice. Not to mention ages differences or anything else.

Been trying to think up some genuine comparisons and it is quite difficult. Looking for definitive first team players at 'best of the rest' type teams who have been poached away by top clubs pretty much at their peak. Trying to restrict it to defenders too so it's a more direct comparison.

Clyne and Lovren from Southampton to Liverpool, former a similar fee to Doherty and the latter significantly more, though both a few years younger at the time.

Lescott going to City from Everton was £20m+ over a decade ago and although a bit younger than Doherty is now he was similar in struggling to make mark internationally against more established rivals.

I'm not sure it's a direct "can we upgrade doc for 15m?"

I think it's more "will we ever be in a position again where someone will give us £15m for doc?" I think this is the opportunity that Jeff & Nuno have seen and taken.

This is the bit that gets more complicated for me, the difference in fees vs difference in quality. If someone comes in and does better for neutral or better cost then it becomes pretty much irrelevant what Doherty went for, self funded upgrade. If it ends up costing more money to replace him then you've got to look for a more significant improvement to justify the outlay in my opinion. A sideways step perhaps not the end of the world if it freed up funds to improve other areas of the squad, particularly if the replacement is younger with scope to improve, long term benefit.

Jonny signed for Atletico for about £6.5m as we took him on loan they flipped him for 2.5 times that in 6 months. Not really a good comparison in terms of value

That’s not my point. Do you think Doherty is twice the player Jonny is? We bought Jonny as a proven top half PL fullback, just as Doherty is now. I think £15M is the low end of a fair price.

Whether Atletico robbed Celta Vigo or not isn’t relevant to what I’m saying.
