Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

That’s not my point. Do you think Doherty is twice the player Jonny is? We bought Jonny as a proven top half PL fullback, just as Doherty is now. I think £15M is the low end of a fair price.

Whether Atletico robbed Celta Vigo or not isn’t relevant to what I’m saying.
No, I think Doherty was a first team player for a rival to Spurs who they wanted to sign and haven't been made to pay a premium for doing so. If they'd come in for Jonny I'd expect the same

I'd just like someone who would improve the team in general play. We can be quite predictable at times and someone with a change of speed, and higher technical level will help with that I think. Potentially lose out on Doc's aerial ability of course but I think overall we'd improve.

I'd still be tempted by Aarons, who has a lot of improvement in him too. Frimpong at Celtic has been mentioned too on here. Buta seems a likely target I guess.

Had a look on smarterscout too to find 'similar' players to Doc in terms of outputs and Hateboer came up who would definitely be an upgrade but not sure how much he cost. Maybe Castagne would be more likely actually? Atalanta would sell if the price was right I think. Andrea Conti too who might be more likely to be available?

I don't think we would accept £15m for Jonny though

Sooooooo, everyone fancy a dodgy rumour to mix things up a little?

Andy Pearce (the bloke who sorts most of the houses for new players) has just started following Diogo Dalot on his social media accounts.

Obviously that means he’s signing for us. You heard it here first...

I'm conscious that this is just a circular conversation, but neither do I think we should have done for Doherty. Not because I think he's great, not because I wouldn't be happy for him to be replaced, but because a team higher than us in the league wanted him, appears to have made the first contact and at the point of sale we don't outwardly have a credible replacement within the squad nor on the verge of signing

This is where the Dalot links are probably coming from. A RWB who is big and physical who also happens to be Portuguese...

I don’t know how good he is, haven’t seen enough of him. The fact Utd don’t want him and signed AWB suggests they don’t rate him.

Also don’t think commentators could manage having a second Diogo in the team either. The fact David Jones still calls Jota “Diego” does my head in.

Hadn’t even seen this when originally posted. Saw the initial chat a week or so ago and assumed was a “lazy Portuguese link”

See, even as a chin stroking pseud, I'd be annoyed with that.

Dalot hasn't looked particularly good despite a fair old settling in period. That seems an unnecessary punt on someone who's done nothing.

Two players out of the first team picture vs first (only) choice. Not to mention ages differences or anything else.

Been trying to think up some genuine comparisons and it is quite difficult. Looking for definitive first team players at 'best of the rest' type teams who have been poached away by top clubs pretty much at their peak. Trying to restrict it to defenders too so it's a more direct comparison.

Clyne and Lovren from Southampton to Liverpool, former a similar fee to Doherty and the latter significantly more, though both a few years younger at the time.

Lescott going to City from Everton was £20m+ over a decade ago and although a bit younger than Doherty is now he was similar in struggling to make mark internationally against more established rivals.
Glen Johnson to Liverpool? 18million I think.

No I get that, I just think (if he hadn't got injured of course) Jonny is of far more importance to the squad, and so we would make it harder to sign him. In fact, a fit Jonny would actually be a very good signing for them (on the left) the way Jose has them playing.

I find the fee concerning for the reasons you have said, but I'm more worried about what it currently leaves us with.

Portuguese, more a rwb than rb, but spends a lot of time broken and from what I've seen is questionable at best defensively

Dalot is shit..no for me

Yeah I can't say I've truly seen enough. If we did go for him I'd be on the fence but hopeful Nuno would get the most out of him.

Could cover both sides I guess - he has covered at left back anyway I think before?

Dalot is shite - would not be at all happy with that.

But everyone is basing his transfer value on thins they can’t know. Boly, Neves, Jonny, Neto...transfer fees in or around what was paid for Doherty and you can make an argument for each without knowing the real reason they came for the price they did. Boly wasn’t pulling up trees at his club, Neves was a “Mendes favour”, Jonny was a strange one, Neto we paid for potential. Or there could be other reasons. Doherty could have been given an “easy transfer” due to the club wanting it done quickly, for the money he went for why haven’t there been other offers in excess of £15 million, or have there but Doherty only wants Spurs?

It is only a false equivalence if you apply your own filter to the circumstances and beyond a brief statement from the club nobody really knows the circumstances.

Completely different point in his career to Doherty though, not sure he was even in the West Ham team much before leaving was he?

Was just trying to keep it simple by removing as many variables as possible.

I think that bloke follows Diogo Leite too.....

Edit. No he doesn't

Haven’t Villa been linked with him too? That Pearce guy appears to sort out stuff like this for midlands based footballers

Johnson was 25 and was signed from Portsmouth, Johnson had done his stints at West Ham and Chelsea prior to that.

As you say it's really difficult to come up with a comparative transfer, and as this Johnson one is from 2009 it probably isn't ether! It just sprung to mind.
