Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

Johnson was 25 and was signed from Portsmouth, Johnson had done his stints at West Ham and Chelsea prior to that.

As you say it's really difficult to come up with a comparative transfer, and as this Johnson one is from 2009 it probably isn't ether! It just sprung to mind.

There are no comparable players to Doc either.

Have you ever seen a RWB play like that? And hard to imagine Spurs will hand him the exact same role, because none of it fits.

Haven’t Villa been linked with him too? That Pearce guy appears to sort out stuff like this for midlands based footballers

Not sure Villa would need him. Guilbert is one of the only players there who is actually OK

Agreed. Which is a huge part of why I don't see us replacing him as easily as most think.

Why does any replacement only need to cost £15m?

We tried to buy Cancelo for £40m and I'm sure if we find the right player available we'll spend whatever they cost.

Well if we spent 15 mil on shite that was worse than Doc it would be bad obvs

My bad didn't read your post properly and was just thinking that West Ham > Chelsea move.

It's not about comparing the players as such, more their importance to the selling club, point in their career, disparity between clubs, etc.

That's why I was trying to pick other guaranteed first choice defenders of similar age who'd made that sort of 7/8th to top 6 jump. Doesn't really matter what any of us think of say Clyne v Doherty in a playing sense, they would've been of similar importance to their respective clubs, who were in similar spots in the league and being poached by teams higher up.

We won't do it directly.

I think we trust Adama more now to do the work that Doc does in linking with Raul. You don't need two people doing the same thing and it's not like you can tell Doc to change his game and stay outside instead because....well, he's shit at that. It kind of killed Costa's Wolves career that he had to end up doing that bit for him (although he also dropped off, and I didn't mind too much when he went, and certainly think we got a good deal out of it all things considered).

I think it'll be a lot more of a conventional RWB that we sign. Down the outside and can actually cross the ball (I know you claim Doc can do it, I say he can't :D )

I'm not sure the argument about fee inflation holds much weight given the pandemic tbh. Pretty much all teams have less available cash, the market's going to be comparatively flat.

Yes I know Chilwell. But Chelsea aren't a good comparitor any which way you cut it. They have an oil baron funding them who doesn't care about covering losses, Fosun aren't even remotely the same. And this is a team who spent £70m on Kepa, who they don't even want anymore. Never mind what they sold Lukaku, de Bruyne, Salah for - they get done on both sides frequently, they just don't care.

I don't see a WB going on the outside of Traore to be honest, AT's thing is getting to the by line and crossing, he isn't going to be coming inside and playing it to an onrushing RWB, Podence would be more suited to linking up with a WB of that type.

Doc was an inverted Wing back at Wolves and I think anyone playing with Traore would need to be too.

I think Adama's best work is when he picks it up wide(ish) and drives centrally. As just a bog standard winger I'm not sure he's that much of a threat.

Walker-Peters whose played a handful of games for them has been sold for £3m less than Spurs paid for Doherty.

I don't disagree about the Covid affect, just don't think it's valid in this instance.

I wouldn't be picking a wing back to complement Traore. In an ideal world I wouldn't start him, I'd still go 352 if we had the personnel

Not sure I see deliveries from wingbacks being that big of a thing for Wolves.

If it's 343 then it's more about getting the wide forwards close enough to Jimenez to combine in the channels and create problems there. 352 seems more of a backup options these days with the relative strength in wide forwards compared to centre forwards.

I guess if you got another centre forward that could at times play with Jimenez and a more attacking central midfielder you might actually get a few more bodies in the box to make it worth playing that way. Then you'd need to upgrade the left sided wingback too though because Jonny is never going to be delivering those sort of balls on his weaker side and Vinagre beats the first man about as often as Moutinho's corners.

KWP is basically a swap for Hojbjerg isn't he? But it's a Juve type deal where you load money on for accounting purposes.

He's also 23 and presumably has room to grow and improve, Doc probably doesn't. Southampton are paying with the belief he'll be worth more in a few years.

But, this has been covered before :surrender:

-edit- also yeah I forgot the Hojberg thing...that will have played a part

They were announced separately, a couple of days apart and KWP spent the second half of last season there, so not sure.

There has to be something to suggest that potential though, what has KWP ever done?
