Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

If we don't sign anyone then rest assured I won't be making any excuses for anyone. Although I'll maintain that Matt Doherty is not a good footballer and I doubt I'll miss him.

100%, I just don’t think we will come to the end of the transfer window and we will be forced to play Traore every week there. That doesn’t make me a head in the sand person surely

We will sign a replacement, I'm not sure even the most worrisome Wolves fan is disputing that. The issues surrounding this transfer for me are:

A) The fee, which I don't believe to be good value - (it's only slightly above what we sold Afobe for!) Given how much we got for Cav, Costa and Afobe I find it really odd the fee is so low, it goes against everything Fosun have done with their cash so far.

B) In doing it this way around whoever we are negotiating with in getting a replacement will know we are desperate to sign their player and if they have any sense will screw more money out of us, rather than us operating from a position of strength where we could just shrug and say "well we have the perfectly adequate Doherty we can continue to play there".

C) I'm not sure who is responsible for our recruitment at the moment? I worry that Shi has taken on too much.

D) We knew with Doherty we had a consistent 7/10 RWB, we don't KNOW that his replacement will be good enough, will settle, will adapt to the football we play etc, and as we have sold Doherty we won't be able to just slot him back in, like how we replaced Jesus with Saiss and Bennett.

E) I think Nuno signing a contract would do a lot to assauge concerns, whilst we know that in reality Manager contracts aren't all that important. From an optic point of view to our fans, our players and prospective players it would be a very positive story.

It seems necessary to caveat this with i only comment with the limited knowledge I have, so what?

I could wait until the end of the window to ever post again, but like all of you I enjoy thinking, reading, and talking about Wolves, this forum wouldn't exist if we all took the advice of just "waiting and see", those that want to wait and see don't need to read or post on this thread do they?

a) Attackers cost more, as you well know. And just because we ripped other clubs off doesn't mean we can do that 100% of the time

b) We might have a deal already sorted out, we aren't just going to start looking now as discussed earlier

c) The guy's name was mentioned on one of the Jeff pieces last week but I can't remember it now off hand. Seems a bit of an odd one as I think his background is in being a club secretary? I don't know tbh

d) I wouldn't say he was consistent. When he was bad he was still 2/10. Basically he had to perform at his maximum to look acceptable, if he didn't then all the weaknesses got very much shown up

e) Optics yes, the reality of it not so much. I'm not too bothered about this one, if he were concerned about the club downsizing or not meeting his ambitions he'd just walk while his stock is at an all time high

Hope that isn't too patronising and that I come across like a normal football fan.

Farewell to Matt Doherty, feels strange to see him leave. After wanting him out for quite some time it is weird to see him actually go, thought he would stay forever. Utter rubbish before Nuno, got lucky in the manager using a system which was almost perfect for him, utilising what he had and minimising the flaws. But I will credit him for working hard under Nuno to improve - this was a guy I wrote off as a League One fullback and he is now going to start for Tottenham! Some good memories to be fair, popped up with some important goals. I've softened on him a bit and do wish him well for the future, though I'm doubtful of how well he will do at Spurs as a RB.

Assuming it is £15m I can't shake the feeling we have undervalued him in the sale (but is that based in reality or just in fans overrating the value of their own players?). Though at the same time, the guy had obviously peaked at Wolves - in fact I would say he has slightly declined from last season. I could not see him improving any further at the club and he isn't getting any younger. If there is any time to cash in, now is the time. One of the main candidates if you asked everyone to pick out an area of the first XI that needs improving too.

Not too concerned if we are not signing AMN - doesn't seem that good. Brings some versatility but not sure what else. It's a bit concerning that we have nobody in the position currently but that concern is only natural. We're obviously looking for a new WB and I highly, highly doubt that Maitland-Niles was our only target.

Lot of criticism about our window last summer, Vallejo and Cutrone each didn't work out for their own reasons but I thought the club did at least sign the right positions. The main issue was that the personnel didn't click (Cutrone) or were not good enough (Vallejo). The only time it has felt like we were truly short in a position under Nuno was striker at the start of 17-18 (which worked out anyway). I have faith in the club to get someone in - my main concern is the quality of the arrival. I don't think Maitland-Niles was right; oh well - next target (Matty Cash perhaps?).

100% certain we will have signed a new RWB by the start of the season. I'll panic if we do not come deadline day. Sorry if I have repeated what has already been said, reading back has been quite tedious.
Looks like Cash is off to Villa for £12m

Transfers

New to this forum but just wanted too put my thoughts out there at this present time me individually I am concerned not too say what we have done over the last few seasons imo is remarkable but as I say I’m worried for us not too take the next step as transfers are concerned doc as departed now we know there’s interest for at least 3 more of our starting eleven I understand we’ve been linked with quite a few but 2 weeks before the new season and apart from a free transfer no one else as put pen too paper I just really hope fosun are true too there word and do invest as it would be heartbreaking for all us wolves fans too go backwards now

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned but we also reportedly signed Jonny for £15M. I don’t think £15M is really too unreasonable for Doherty really. Especially considering if they try to play him as a fullback it’s going to be directly at the detriment of one of our closest rivals in the table.
Jonny signed for Atletico for about £6.5m as we took him on loan they flipped him for 2.5 times that in 6 months. Not really a good comparison in terms of value

Isn't it irrelevant what he signed for initially thought?

More false equivalence on it's way

I know what you're saying, but these are the only players we've ever signed that cost more than we've sold Doherty for:

Patricio
Neves
Jota
Jonny
Podence
Traore
Jimenez
Cutrone

They're not even on the same level (bar Cutrone) and given the current situation, transfer market inflation doesn't come into it.

I do look forward to this level of financial scrutiny being applied to every single incoming and outgoing deal we do though, only it seemed that for years no-one was that bothered about financials...

You're all gonna disagree but I think we've done spurs rather than them doing us
