Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

Sparked by a poor use of the word equivalent. I am very concerned at the gap in quality between our starting 11 and our back ups. Apart from wingers our back up is quite a bit poorer . I do not think that is the same in any other club bar Sheffield United , newly promoted teams excluded. I fear it’s another season of the sky six winning everything , buying everyone of note and the gap between them and the rest growing.

What doesn’t help my frustration is us saying we need to strengthen our depth quality (Nuno said that after we lost to Seville) and promptly letting two members of that already thin squad go. One a regular starter and one on the fringe.

Now I would happily have taken upgrades on both and have said as much but it’s highly unlikely AML is coming here. We are still several players short and the season is two weeks away.

Agree we should have a bit more depth, pretty sure everyone agrees on that..we will see what happens in this window

You’re basically using lots and lots of words to say what most of us already know and agree on. I don’t really understand what your argument is (or more so, who’s disagreeing with you? We all said we need new signings and we need to improve the bench!) and I’ve no idea what that nonsense about Liverpool’s squad was last night.

I do, however, agree that the people sticking their heads in the sand and just putting all their trust in Jeff Shi and defending the clubs every move are more than a little tedious. But as there’s literally nothing any of us can do about it, I guess we just need to sit back and wait.

This was doing the rounds on Twitter last night. Good to see the Mirror go to press with a factual article full of quotes, evidence and good points.

Yeah, same guy said adama was joining Liverpool Last week or something, now says adama is available for 40m.

I mean don’t get me wrong, Nuno probably wants assurances over investment etc, but he has the power at the club already to command that I would say.

Also, I trust Percy, who said he went with Nuno’s agreement, over this guy saying he didn’t want him sold and saw him as integrity

Big week coming up. If we're in the same place this time next week it won't be good.

That was literally what was said every week last year. “I will be worried if we haven’t signed anyone by next week, I guarantee we will get a few though”.

A week later...

“There’s still a few weeks left, trust the club, season hasn’t started yet”.

Like clockwork

Not sure signings will even happy this week due to internationals to be honest. Suppose it depends who we are after

I think you sum up how I feel. It is exacerbated by Nunos insistence on working with a small squad. When that squad is further reduced by selling or loaning players without replacements visible, and I accept they may well be, it does make me and others twitchy . I don’t call signing villas fourth choice keeper strengthening the first team .

Now there are rumours that Nuno may not be happy at lack of funds and it’s going to get some anxious responses. Me included.

Our first 11 are not players who will be happy just to meander in mid table they are young, hungry and want to win things or at least challenge. That always translates into unrest if they feel that for whatever reason, the team is not strong enough to do that.

I really want at least two players in this week. RWB and Raul cover or CM

It's not about how good the bench is, it's about the managers faith in using it. Wilder does in his, Nuno doesn't in his outside of the 2/3 we know. Whether you blame Nuno for not being trusting enough or that the quality isn't there is open to interpretation, but as it stands and assuming Doc goes there's 5 of those bench positions you and I may as well be sat on next Monday as it stands in terms of Nuno using them tactically

"His departure was not something we had planned ahead of the summer, but when the offer came in, we discussed and analysed it deeply with the coaching team and the board. We also spoke to Matt who was eager to move onto a new chapter in his career.
“Ultimately, we believe that this transfer is in the best interests of the club, and it goes without saying that Matt leaves with our best wishes."

So file the Nuno had decided to move away from him at the end of the season, at least squad wise, in the bollocks bin.

Ffs who cares? It's Matt Doherty. Provided we make the right signings, I couldn't really care less. It's money in for FFP purposes that we weren't expecting (albeit not as much as you'd expect if (unofficial) reports are to be believed). All this "Irish Cafu" stuff is insane.

Thanks for the goal against Man City, Matt. I'm petrified on your behalf of having to play fullback in the Premier League next season.

They’re not likely to say “we had a chat at the end of the season and Nuno decided he was the first one we could upgrade to kick on”

Then why say that at all? The sentence would have made perfect sense from the word when

Disagree actually. The quote reads like diplomatically worded way of saying exactly that. i.e.

“We’d already identified it as an area to upgrade, so upon receiving an offer and discussing it over, we decided it was in the best interests of the club.”

Onto a massive couple of weeks. It can be simultaneously true to think that the sale makes sense and that it leaves us massively exposed with the season fast approaching.

Statement appears to me that the club received a bid, and after discussing it with the coaching team they decided that we could upgrade in that area and decided he can go. See ya later Matt.

The bid was very low though..
