Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

Based on that he is just about one of the best RWB:s in the PL

Not that many teams play RWBs (nor is he a conventional RWB), but no, no he isn't.

Because Spurs want him, so pay going rate for a PL player with “favourable stats” in back to back season. Whether we tink he’s shit or Spurs think he’s limited (they don’t or they wouldn’t be trying to sign him, as you say “they see a role for him”).

Why you and others are trying to justify a low fee for him is baffling. Why can’t we just accept that £15m for a starting WB, not angling for a move, with a long contract, with statistically two good seasons, to a top 6 club is just strange. Whether we want him or not, or whether we sign TAA for £15m afterwards is irrelevant to whether £15m for Matt Doherty to spurs is less than the going rate.

Now we might think we mentioned by someone earlier that a quick sale and then reinvesting the money straight away is better than haggling for a few extra million. It might be but again it doesn’t change that in isolation £15m is bad value.

But if Nuno has identified Doherty as one to upgrade there is a limited market for a player like him. If he's worth a lot more where are all those teams that think so? It was clear he might be available yet nobody called Jeff and said "Is he really going for £12-15m, if so we'll pay you £3m more because we want him"?

I'd like to think I'm normally fairly rational but I am getting a bit twitchy now about new signings.

Not even anything for the u23s

But spurs want him, he wasn’t for sale. We might not think he’s very good or know he’s limited. But they want him, so they aren’t worried about he’s deficiencies. I’ve said the reasons why it should be more. We will leave it there.

Can't remember where I read it as I dismissed it out of hand originally (makes me think it was probably Joey E&S) but someone definitely said something along the lines of us focusing on outgoings before we brought anyone in.

I think people are panicking a bit because the season starts so soon but these are not normal circumstances and the window doesn't shut for a long time yet. It may well be the case that we start the first game or two with Vinagre & Adama at wing back (not ideal obviously but we've done that out of choice on multiple occasions before now) and no back up beyond Buur & Richards. What we can't do is let that situation affect our dealings. What matters is that we come out of this window with the right players at the right price, not worry about how weak our bench might look for Sheffield United away.

We may be able to get away with that, but I worry we'll end up letting points drain away for half a dozen games while we sort our shit out, especially if the players we already flogged last season come back still tired and uninspired, have no fresh blood and are also missing two solid performers from last year.

We missed out on Europe on GD last season, every point and every game counts

Ah, a straw to clutch onto. AMN isn't starting for Arsenal today apparently

How I feel about doch, good or bad is irrelevant, I simply cannot believe that Jeff and nuno would sell doc without having a deal or three in the pipeline.

I don't think Thelwells departure has any bearing on this, it could be as simple as get the 15 mill and we'll bung it towards AMN and avoid any FFP shit with UEFA NEXT SEASON.

Maitland-Niles starts today. However, so does Holding, who is meant to be close to joining Newcastle on loan

Not commented on the Doc situation yet but without wanting to sound like a broken record, we don't know what is happening behind the scenes, who we've targeted, who we've made contact with and if we have, how far down the line the negotiations are.

I can't bring myself to get worked up about Doherty leaving until we see the end result when the window closes.

I absolutely trust Nuno and Jeff Shi because they have improved this club to a degree I didn't think was possible, particularly in the time frame they have. We are making rapid progress in terms of overall growth even if our transfer business - on the surface - looks rather stagnant.

In short, I think they know what they're doing and there will be a lot going on behind the scenes that we have no idea about.

As ever, supporters need to show some faith and some patience.

Hopefully we have moved on to other targets. The noises coming out of Arsenal are that Arteta likes him and wants to keep him.

Faith and patience are one thing but we have not had a great window for a while and the squad is now on the anorexic scale with regard to depth of quality. We have 11 or 12 premier league players and then thats it. Harsh on Kilman Burr , etc it may be but thats what it looks like now.

Kudos on only picking up on half of the last sentence of my post and ignoring the rest.

Getting close to suggesting to the other Mods/Admins that we close this thread for a bit. The discussion is beyond tedious.

Sure, we don’t know what’s happening behind closed doors but the season starts in two weeks and without Doc we go in to the season with one fit wing back who was on the bench last season. Thats called going backwards. How anyone can defend that is beyond me, yet I’ve seen about 30+ pages of people arguing otherwise.

The sooner we make a fucking signing or two, the better. With this ongoing situation and the panning of the new away shirt, it hasn’t been a good week for Jeff.

That has been said from the start, but if the player wants to leave then Arteta's hands are tied. The issue is the fee. They want £20-25m for him. We don't want to pay much more than £15m. Or at least that was reported to be our opening offer.

Ultimately we'll never know what's going on with negotiations.
